If you are in Shanghai and want to throw away a cup of milk tea, be careful. You need to follow these steps: first, pour out any leftover into a wet waste bin; then, before throwing the single-use cup into a dry waste bin, put the wrapper into a recyclable waste bin.
Sounds difficult and annoying? You'll have to get used to it. People in Shanghai are required to sort (分类) their garbage (垃圾) according to strict rules.
Why should we sort our garbage? The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year, according to China Economic Net. Most of the waste is buried in landfills, which may pollute the water and soil. Moreover, we are running out of space for new landfills.
In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable garbage can be made into new materials. For example, wet garbage can be used to make gas, heat and fertilizer. But in order to recycle garbage efficiently (有效地), we need to sort our garbage.
Can't garbage-processing companies do the sorting job? They can. But that requires a lot of work and costs lots of money. Things will become much easier if each of us can sort our own garbage. Besides, the annoying (使烦恼的) task of sorting might encourage people to produce less waste. Do you still want to buy that milk tea?

To solve these problems, the government passed The Yangtze River Protection Law of the People's Republic of China. The law came into force on March 1, 2023. There are nine parts in the law, covering areas such as resource protection, anti-pollution measures, green development and legal responsibilities (责任).
More importantly, the law has introduced a fishing ban (禁令)on the Yangtze River's natural waterways. According to the new law, both the central government and local organizations would put the river protection into their economic (经济的)and social development plans.
Many fishermen have given up their fishing rights along the Yangtze River. Chinese Vice-Premier Han Zheng says that more support should be given to these people to help them find new jobs. Almost every Chinese can recite the two lines of the famous poem,"Every grain on the plate comes from hard work." But sadly, many of us don't actually get the real meaning of these lines:Don't waste food.
A CCTV program,News1+1,reported that the food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.
Do we have too much food?Of course not. According to the World Food Programme, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2010,especially in developing countries.
Chinese people are well known for being hospitable (好客的) and generous. Many even feel that they will lose face if their guests eat all the food on the table.
Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Nanjing, got fired (开除) because she took some leftover food home for her son. Many people stood by her side and criticized (批评) the behavior of wasting food.
What should we do in our daily lives to waste less food? Here are some tips:
1.Do not order too much in a restaurant. Only order as much as you want to eat. If you cannot eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.
2.Don't be too picky (挑剔的) about food. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it.

It's Time to Fight against E-waste
Hello, everyone.
As we all know, people's living conditions are improving rapidly in China. There is more and more e-waste around us, such as old TV sets, old computers, waste mobile phones and so on. We don't know how to deal with them. If we throw them away, they will pollute the soil and water. They are harmful to our environment. It's time to fight against e-waste. We can do the following:
First, we should try to change e-products less often unless we have to. Second, we mustn't throw them away. We should give them to recycling centers to deal with them.
My dear friends, let's take an active part in fighting against e-waste.
