My parents never once spoke of the stress of having to pay for college, but I knew enough to appreciate that it was there. Therefore, when my French teacher announced that she’d be leading an optional class trip to Paris over one of our breaks for those who could come up with the money to do it, I didn’t even bother to raise the issue at home.
Yet one evening my parents sat me down, looking puzzled. My mom had learned about the France trip through my friend’s mom.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” she said.
“Because it’s too much money.”
“That’s actually not for you to decide, Michelle,” my dad said gently, almost offended.
“And how are we supposed to decide, if we don’t even know about it?”
I looked at them both, unsure of what to say. My mother glanced at me, her eyes soft. My father had changed out of his work uniform and into a clean white shirt. They were in their early forties then, married nearly twenty years. Neither one of them had ever vacationed in Europe. They never took beach trips or went out to dinner. They didn’t own a house. We were their investment, me and my brother. Everything went into us.
A few months later, I boarded a flight to Paris with my teacher and a dozen or so of my classmates from Whitney Young. We would stay in a hostel, tour the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. We’d buy snacks from stands on the street and walk along the banks of the Sinewed speak French like a bunch of high school kids from Chicago, but we’d at least speak French.
As the plane pulled away from its gate that day, I looked out my window and back at the airport, knowing that my mother stood somewhere behind its black-glass windows, dressed in her winter coat and waving me on. I remember all the details. I remember the jet engines firing, shockingly loud. And then we were rattling down the runway and beginning to tilt upward as the acceleration seized my chest and pressed me backward into my seat for that strange, in-between moment that comes before finally you feel lifted.

Huang, 24, is a native of Maodao township in Wuzhishan county, South China's Hainan Province. Born into a family of the Li ethnic group, he was exposed to Li culture as a child, especially the ethnic brocade (织绵),which is famous for its bright, striking colors. But he had no idea how to weave it. “My parents are lifetime farmers, and no one in the family really knew much about weaving the brocade” he said.
Huang did not know much about craftsmanship until he was in high school, when local authorities organized an event to introduce intangible cultural heritage to the school campus in 2016. “I was fascinated instantly,” he said. Since then, he fell in love with Li brocade and became the only boy in his home village who could weave it.
“I developed a genuine and everlasting love for the ethnic craft, but some villagers cannot understand why a man is addicted to weaving,” he says. “They think it’s a girl’s thing.” Regardless of it, Huang continued chasing after his weaving dream.
The intangible cultural heritage of Li brocade dates back to more than 3,000 years. In line with Li tradition, the weaving techniques are only “passed on to women, not to men”, as in ancient China, men were supposed to do farm work while women weaved.
In recent years, Hainan education authorities have introduced the traditional craft in local schools, so that the younger generation can understand and learn about the ethnic culture.
When Huang learned of the ancient craftsmanship in high school, he started weaving almost immediately. “I gave my first handmade brocade piece to my teacher to express my gratitude for her guidance.” said Huang.
28.What can we infer from paragraph 1 and 2 about the ethnic brocade?
A. It is only liked by women.
B. It is famous for light colors.
C. It belongs to intangible cultural heritage.
D. All the women in Huang’s home village can weave it.
29.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The development of Li brocade. B. The definition of Li brocade.
C. The problems of Li brocade. D. The tradition of Li brocade.
30.Which of the following best describes Huang?
A. Humorous and understanding. B. Determined and grateful.
C. Selfless and independent. D. Helpful and energetic.
31.What can we learn through Huang’s story?
A. Interest is the best teacher. B. Never give up.
C. Tradition bridges old and new. D. Honesty is the best policy.
D
In an unusual move, wildlife workers in Florida are feeding manatees(海牛) to keep them from starving. But feeding these massive sea creatures takes a lot of food. So far, the rescue workers have already given out 25 tons of lettuces(生菜). By 2025, there will be 50 tons of lettuces needed, said the rescue workers. They also said the figure will rise to around 70 tons by 2030.
Manatees are huge sea mammals that only eat sea grass and other plants that live in the sea. That’s one reason they’re sometimes called “sea cows”. They spend most of their time in warm, shallow water looking for food.
Sea grass began to disappear around 2011. Warming seas, combined with polluted water and fertilizers that have been washed off from farmlands have created huge growths of algae on the ocean’s surface. The algae blocks the sunlight that allows the sea grass to grow.
The problem is especially grievous in Indian River Lagoon. About 90% of the sea grass beds in the area have died off. Last year, 1,101 manatees died. That was a record. Most died from starvation. Many of the manatees that remain are so thin that their bones can be seen. Often they have trouble swimming. So last December, government wildlife experts came up with a plan to get emergency food to the manatees. They decided to feed them green vegetables like lettuce and cabbage.
As a feeding spot, they chose a part of the Indian River Lagoon where Florida Power & Light has a power plant. The power plant releases warm and clean water, so it’s popular with the manatees.
The feeding station has been very successful. Around 350 manatees a day have come to get food. On some days, as many as 800 manatees have shown up.
32.How many more lettuces will manatees need by 2030 than now?
A. More than 25 tons. B. About 50 tons.
C. Less than 70 tons. D. About 45 tons.
33.What directly makes sea grass disappear?
A. A large number of algae. B. Polluted water.
C. Remaining fertilizers. D. Warming seas.
34.What does the underlined word “grievous” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Relieved. B. Severe. C. Ridiculous. D. Vague.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To thank and praise the rescue workers.
B. To present a new finding about wild animals.
C. To show the terrible situation about Manatees.
D. To tell the improvements of living conditions for manatees.

Dear Tom,
As for your last letter asking about what to use chopsticks properly while eat in China, I’d like to offer you some suggestions.
You’d better keeping the following in mind. Firstly, it is forbidden to point at the others using your chopsticks as it makes people uncomfortable. Beside, don’t tap your bowl with your chopsticks, since that considered impolite to the host or the chef. More important, never stick your chopsticks to the rice bowl. Lay it on your dish if necessary.
I hope my advices will be of use to you.
