The Blue Bird is a 1908 play by Belgian playwright Maurice Maerdinck (1862-1949). winner f the Nbel Prize in Literature in 1911. Maeterlinck wrte many plays, but The Blue Bird was the mst ppular and has been widely translated and adapted all ver the wrld. Perfrmed in 1921 in Shanghai by Chinese students, it was the first freign play staged in China. The Blue Bird tells the tale f brther and sister, Tyltyl and Mytyl, as they are sent by a fairy t seardh fr the Blue Bird f Happiness. The children's adventure takes them thrugh many magical places befre they at last find the Blue Bird in a mst unexpected place.

Unable t find the Blue Bird anywhere, the children say gdbye t their magical friends and return hme. While they are trying t tell their parents abut their adventures, their neighbur cmes in. Her sick daughter has wanted Tyltyl’s pet bird fr a lng time, but until nw her has been reluctant t give it t her.

bserving a party at the hme f their wealthy landlrds when a fairy appears. She uses a magic diamnd t bring animals (their dg and cat), bjects (sugar and bread) and elements (light, fire, water) in their hme t life.
Tgether, they set ff n a dangerus jurney in search f the Blue Bird. Tyltyl and Mytyl g t many magicalplaces. They encunter numerus characters such as their departed grandparents, trees that hate mankind,
the greedy and ugly Luxuries, and children waiting t be brn. Althugh they try very hard t find the Blue Bird, the birds they find either change clur r die. The children return hme at last, and Tyltyl discvers the Blue Bird has
been there all the time! He gives the bird t the neighbur’s little girl, curing her illness. But in the end, the bird flies away, and Tyltyl asks the audience t search fr it. The central
idea f the play is that happiness is t be fund nt in luxuries such as wealth, but in simple things that are fund in family life, and in acts f friendship and kindness.

News arrives that Antni’s ships have been lst at sea. Unable t get his mney back, Shylck attempts t use justice t enfrce a terrible revenge n Antni: he demands his pund f flesh.
Shylck’s revengeful plan is filed by Prtia, wh turns the tables n Shylck by an argument: he must take flesh nly, and Shylck must die if any bld is
spilled. Thus, the cntract is cancelled. The play ends with the news that, in fact, sme f Antni’s ships have arrived safely.
