    The Freshman Challenge

    I. Analysis of the teaching materials

    The topic of this unit is about teenage life and the reading passage is entitled the freshman challenge, which mainly concerns some big challenges for a new student Adam in his senior high school. In this passage, the main character Adam talks about his experience, thoughts and feelings, and his solutions towards his four challenges in the first person, which is close to students' life. The text adopts a narrative style and the content of the text is constructed according to "total score". The first paragraph is the topic paragraph, which explains Adam's confusion in the first week of high school. The other three paragraphs respectively describe the challenges Adam encountered in the course selection, extra-curricular activities and study, as well as the mentality and strategies to deal with the challenges, which aims to help the students understand the campus life and learning conditions of foreign students, explore and compare the campus life of Chinese and foreign students, and take a positive attitude to meet the challenges of their new life.

    II. Teaching objectives

    At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

    1.Identify the useful usage of the words and expressions in this reading passage. 2.Figure out the main structures of the passage by analysing the main idea of each part .

    3.Discover the challenges Adam meets in his new school and compare the similarities and differences of their school and Adam's.

    4.Describe the challenges and solutions by using the related vocabulary and realize the importance of forming a positive attitude towards challenges.

    III. Teaching key points

    1. Analyse the main idea of each paragraph to deepen the understanding of the text.

    2.Identify the useful patterns and expressions from the reading text and use them in real situation.

    3.Enable the students to compare school life in different places.

    IV.Teaching difficult points

    1. Enable the students to judge the structures of the passage and catch the key information to understand the text.

    2. Encourage the students to show their creativity.

    3.Enable students to voice personal ideas with the help of the target vocabulary.

    Step1 Lead-in & Pre-reading

    Activity 1:Free talk

    Talk about the feelings as a freshman at senior high school.

    Activity 2:Work in groups and discuss the questions

    What do you want to know about school life in other countries?

    What would you tell a teenage from another country about school life in China?

    Purpose:To set up a scene, introduce the topic and arouse Students interest and imagination.

    Step2While reading

    Activity1:prediction

    Ask students to predict the main idea of the whole passage by skimming the title.From the title, we can predict the passage is mainly about the challenges as a freshman and how to deal with the challenges.

    Activity2:Reading for main ideas

    Read the text quickly to find the main idea of each paragraph and ask students to analyse the structures of the passage by drawing a mind map.

    Activity3:Reading for details

    Ask students to read Paragraph 2 to 4 and tell what challenges Adam met as a freshman and then find out the sentences to fill in the table.

    Work in pairs and write a letter to help Adam to get along well with his school life as a freshman.
