Step 1  Review

1. Homework check.

2. Briefly recap what the students learned in the last lesson such as the seasons and the weather.

Step 2  Warming up

Show a calendar to the class and have a conversation with the class like this:

T: What month is it?

Ss: …

T: Why do you think some of the days are circled?

Ss: …

T: Whose birthdays are in this month?

Ss: …

Step 3  Presentation 

1. Get the students to read the new words calendar, December, Friday, Sunday, eve, midnight, Christmas, sale, best and Tony aloud by themselves.

2. Get the students to repeat the words two or three times after the teacher. Make sure they can pronounce them correctly.

1. My best friend Tony’s birthday is on Tuesday, December 6.

我最好的朋友托尼的生日在12月6日，星期二。

 (1) best此处是形容词good的最高级形式，意为“最好的”，前面通常有定冠词the或形容词性物主代词。

　Is this the best choice? 这是最好的选择吗？

　best也是副词well的比较级。

　Of all the subjects, I like history best. 在所有的科目中，我最喜欢历史。

(2) 辨析：on, in与at

2. Many stores have big sales! 许多商店都有大减价！

  sale作可数名词，意为“减价出售”，big sales意为“大优惠；大减价”。

　The store is having a big sale.

  那家商店正在进行大甩卖。

　[拓展]

　on sale也是一个固定短语，意为“降价出售”，此时sale作不可数名词。

　The umbrellas are on sale.

  这些伞正降价出售。

3. And just before midnight, all of us count down—three, two, one.

 就在午夜来临前，我们所有人都倒计时——三、二、一。

  count down意为“倒计时；倒读数”。

　Spring Festival is coming and the children are counting down the days.

  春节就要到了，孩子们正在倒数日子。
