Jose Alberto Gutierrez's life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the garbage 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighborhoods at night and seeing deserted books. It sparked his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He took home between 50 and 60 books every morning after his nine-hour shift. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library.
Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 13 million residents and 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Having access to a library of books and being taken away to another world while immersed in a book is a luxury for the kids who visit Gutierrez's library.
Gutierrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless, his mother was a keen reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutierrez, who never let a lack of formal education stop him from reading classics by the likes of Victor Hugo, Mario Vargas Llosa and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Today, his community library, called “The Strength of Words“, occupies most of his home and is piled from floor to ceiling with fiction and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to story books can be found in his collection of more than 20,000 books!
The Strength of Words library opens every weekend. It is not just school-going children who are enjoying the benefits of The Strength of Words library. Adults are also welcome to expand their horizons and develop new skills to build a better life for themselves.
Despite having done so much for his community, Gutierrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through bins for reading material and has even travelled to book fairs in Mexico and Chile to sell his idea of building library from unwanted books.
    4. What inspired Gutierrez to build the community library?
    A. The dilemma he faced on the night shift.
    B. The hobby he has started since childhood.
    C. Famous novelists he liked very much.
    D. Abandoned books he came across at work.
    5. What can we learn about Gutierrez's mother?
    A. She was born into a poor family.
    B. She bought Gutierrez many books.
    C. She influenced Gutierrez greatly.
    D. She enjoyed reading Hugo’s works.
    6. What does the underlined phrase “call it a day” in the last paragraph mean?
    A. Take the time. B. Stop the work.
    C. Make a change. D. Receive a reward.
    7. What does Gutierrez's story tell us?
    A. A book holds a house of gold.
    B. Constant dropping wears the stone.
    C. Good things come to those who wait.
    D. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
D 5. C 6. B 7. D

根据第一段中的“Jose Alberto Gutierrez's life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the garbage 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighborhoods at night and seeing deserted books. It sparked his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He took home between 50 and 60 books every morning after his nine-hour shift. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library.

根据第三段中的“Nevertheless, his mother was a keen reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutierrez. (然而,他的母亲是一个热心的读者,每天晚上读故事给他听。她对书的热爱给古铁雷斯留下了深刻的印象)”可知,古铁雷斯的母亲酷爱读书,每晚都会给他讲故事。母亲对书籍的喜爱给古铁雷斯留下了深刻的印象,极大地影响了他,让他也爱上了阅读。故选C。
3.词义猜测题。根据后文“He continues to search through bins for reading material and has even travelled to book fairs in Mexico and Chile to sell his idea of building library from unwanted books. (他继续在垃圾箱里寻找阅读材料,甚至前往墨西哥和智利的书展,推销他用废弃书籍建造图书馆的想法。)”可知,古铁雷斯继续搜罗更多的书,甚至还去到墨西哥和智利的书展兜售自己的想法,可见他并没有就此停止他的公益行为。因此推断call it a day意思是“到此为止;停止”。故选B。
根据第一段的“Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library.(最后,他把自己的藏书变成了一个社区图书馆。)”
    C
Benedict Morelli, one of New York’s top-rated lawyers, owns Morelli Law Firm, which has offices, lawyers, cases and experts all over the country. One critical reason for their success is that unlike many firms, Morelli Law has the experience, patience, and resources to pursue all difficult cases. Since founding the firm, Mr. Morelli and his team have successfully dealt with an impressive list of outstanding cases in the industry. In fact, they have delivered more than a billion dollars on behalf of their clients. Impressive firm results include a $95 million settlement in a sexual discrimination case involving Aaron’s Inc., as well as a $62 million settlement for Mark Perez, a construction worker who fell from a roof and suffered a brain injury.
When asked whether they would feel afraid when facing difficult opponents in court, “At my core, I’m a trial lawyer,” said Benedict Morelli. “Because of our experience and accomplishments in the courtroom, our opponents know that we’re prepared to pursue the best result possible. Going to trial does not intimidate us.”
The firm is devoted to realizing its clients’ goals both inside and outside of the courtroom. For example, in a drunk driving case, the firm worked with the client to strengthen New York laws that punish drunk drivers. This effort has made it easier for lawyers in New York to charge drunk drivers. Moreover, Mr. Moreli and his team are also committed to helping those who have been wronged achieve the justice they deserve, no matter the difficulty of the circumstances.
Corporations are powerful actors in society and Mr. Morelli and his team feel fortunate to be in a position to provide the highest level of service to their clients.

根据倒数第二段中的“The firm is devoted to realizing its clients’ goals both inside and outside of the courtroom.(该公司致力于实现其客户在法庭内外的目标。)”

可知,此处介绍了Morelli Law Firm的成功关键,根据第四段中的“The firm is devoted to realizing its clients’ goals both inside and outside of the courtroom. You may have wondered how lavender is used for social anxiety. But first, just what is lavender? Lavender, also known as English or garden lavender, is a herb native to the Mediterranean region. Historically, lavender was used to mummify bodies in Egypt, in baths in Greece and Rome, and for curing the broken skin and mental health purposes. Today, lavender is used as a traditional or complementary remedy for relaxation, to reduce anxiety, and depression, as well as for diseases such as stomach upset and headaches.
No scientific studies have specifically examined the benefits of lavender use for social anxiety disorder. In a 2000 study, Cook and Ernst reported that in general, aromatherapy (芳香疗法) is helpful in reducing anxiety and stress in the short-term. A 2012 study also showed some evidence of the usefulness of lavender taken for anxiety. More research is needed to support the use of lavender for the treatment of social anxiety disorder.
Lavender is usually used in the form of an essential oil as part of aromatherapy. The scent is inhaled, or the oil is applied to the skin, which will benefit the anxious people quickly. Dried lavender can also be used to make a tea or liquid extract. Lavender may also be taken in pill form. Lavender tea can be made by using 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried leaves for 15 minutes in a cup of boiling water. In liquid extract form, no more than 60 drops of lavender should be taken in a day. Before taking lavender in liquid form, you should read the product label and discuss the dose with a qualified health care provider.
There is not enough scientific evidence to safely recommend lavender for children younger than 18 years. Lavender taken by mouth has the potential to increase the risk of bleeding. If you suffer from a bleeding disorder or are taking medicine that may increase bleeding, use caution when taking lavender.
    12. What can we know about lavender from paragraph l?
    A. It can help deal with mental health problems.
    B. It was used to preserve dead bodies in Greece.
    C. It was used to cure stomach upset and headaches.
    D. It is a herb introduced into the Mediterranean region.
    13. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
    A. The treatment for social anxiety disorder.
    B. The history of aromatherapy reducing stress.
    C. The benefits of lavender used for mental disorder.
    D. The researches on the use of lavender for social anxiety.
    14. How is paragraph 3 developed?
    A. By collecting data. B. By making a list.
    C. By introducing concepts. D. By making comparisons.
    15. What can we learn about taking lavender from the text?
    A. It may worsen the bleeding.
    B. It’s proved to be unsafe for kids of 14.
    C. Lavender in pill form functions better than that in liquid.
    D. A dose should be decided according to the product label.
A 13. D 14. B 15. A

Nowadays, many of us are finding ourselves tired out, struggling to build balance back into our lives. ___16___ Spending time near oceans, lakes, rivers and other bule spaces can provide a range of benefits including reducing anxiety, easing mental tiredness and refreshing us. Here is some advice on how to take advantage of the healing power of water.
___17___ You likely have some water close by, even if it is just a pond alongside the road. Start there. Then get out to water you can visit on the weekend or a vacation. Urban water counts—rivers, canals and fountains. ___18___ If you can’t get to actual water, then paintings, photographs, videos and movies can produce some of the same benefits. Even virtual reality helps.
Go often. A little bit makes a big difference. ___19___ But an environmental psychologist found that spending a similar amount of time near water has the same benefits. Even people who look into aquariums(水族箱) have lower heart rates and better moods after just 15 minutes.
Listen. One of the most calming characteristics of water is its sound, typically steady and soft. The water sounds people find having the strongest healing power are rain in a rainforest, waves patting a beach, and a running stream. When the sounds of living things are added to the sounds of water, people like them even better. Make an audio recording of your favorite water. ___20___

Hello, my dear fellows. I’m really excited to be informed that we are going to start an English journal together, which is definitely a wonderful idea. It’s such a golden opportunity to enhance students’ English capability and appreciate the charm of the English language.
As for proposals, I’d like to recommend “Students’ Voice” as a distinctive column. As studying is always students’ top priority, we students are under great pressure and lack opportunities to be listened to. Why not help students voice inner feelings and have a good mood to embrace the tough yet bright future? This column, I promise, is bound to be a precious outlet and a stepping stone to communicating fluently in English.
That’s all for my advice! Thank you!

My middle child, Jake, was smart and good-looking, but he always sees the cup of life as half empty. Every day when he came home from school, Jake would list everything bad that happened that day!
On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for two days. His dad and I didn’t make much then, so it cost a considerable amount, but we felt Jake’s birthday was worth it. After doing Disneyland to death (玩够了), we returned to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, “Did you have fun today, Jake?”
All my fault-finding son could say to me was “Pirates (海盗) of the Caribbean was closed!” “Jake Marshall,” I was clearly unable to contain my anger, “we stood in line for an hour and a half to see The Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain three times. We spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the Caribbean was closed?” Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to be the one to do it!
I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son’s daily pessimistic reports. My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn’t satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Jake realize that good things really were happening to him.
    注意:
    1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual. He listed the terrible things at school. I listened carefully, looking at him and nodding now and then. After his complaint, I asked what good things happened to him. “Nothing.” His response was what I could expect. “Something good must have happened. Think it over, my boy.” I encouraged with a gentle smile. After about fifteen minutes’ effort, he admitted being praised by his head teacher for helping cleaning the front desk. Through this practice, he realized something good really happened to him.
From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points. He would not just consider everything awful, but was willing to discover something awesome. And to my great joy, he kept patient and peaceful during his sharing. He even danced in excitement at wonderful things. I witnessed his attitude changing from negativity to positivity. The path to getting there seemed to be a struggle, but he was making headway. My hard work was paying off and I believed Jake would get used to seeing the cup of life as half full.
