The Elephant Men program is the creation of Reginald Caster and Robert Harris, two friends who grew up together in a poor neighborhood in Memphis, Tennessee. They grew up, moved away, and became successful. They remained friends and shared an aim. The aim was to help boys aged 9 to 13 in their old neighborhood. They wanted to act as role models for young boys and to stop them from getting into trouble as they got older.
They called their program The Elephant Men after reading how elephant families in Africa surround and protect their young when they are in danger. Reginald and Robert’s program supports the young men in inner cities who are at risk of losing their lives to drugs. Their idea is “protecting our youth with the power and belief of the elephant.”
They look for different ways for young men to build respect for themselves and others. One way is to use sports, especially basketball, to bring them together. Another successful program is a four-week summer work program that includes more than 100 young boys. The boys pick up rubbish across the city in exchange for a $200 gift card with which they can buy school clothes. To be part of the program, the boys have to get a reference (介绍信) from an adult at their school who is willing to write something good about them. This gives the boys a reason to do well in school.
“We know our program works,” says Reginald. “We have some kids in college now, and the best day of the year for us is the weekend before school starts, when we see our boys in the stores buying their clothes and books for school.”
24.What did Reginald and Robert hope to do?
    A.Become well-known. B.Leave their hometown.
C.Run their own business. D.Be good examples for boys.
25.What do the boys need to do to be part of the summer work program?
A.Buy clothes. B.Get a recommendation (推荐信) from the school.
C.Collect rubbish. D.Raise $200 for school to buy gifts.
26.How does Reginald feel about The Elephant Men program?
    A.Satisfied. B.Grateful. C.Puzzled. D.Worried.
    C
Teenagers who spend hours in front of the television may have a poorer diet as young adults.
A study, which included nearly 1,400 high school students, found those who watched TV for five hours or more per day had less healthy diets than peers (同龄人) five years later. Why does this happen? Should the parents take any measures?
On the one hand, people who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may snack more, and that may affect their long-term diet quality.
On the other hand, TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks tempt teenagers to eat more of those foods. And TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.
Lead researcher Dr. Daheia J. Barr-Anderson, of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, told Reuters Health a clear correlation between TV time during high school and diet quality in young adulthood. While the heaviest TV viewers were eating the most junk food, those who’d watched less than two hours per day had the highest intake (吸收) of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high-calcium food. In her opinion, parents should limit and monitor TV viewing.
As far as I am concerned, children should watch no more than two hours of television per day. And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time.
28.What’s the best title for this passage?
A.People should keep away from TV to keep healthy. B.Why do teenagers like TV?
C.Teenagers’ TV time may affect their diets later. D.Parents’ own habits may affect children later.
29.According to the passage, heavy TV viewers tend to ______.
A.eat more fruits B.eat less junk food C.take in high-calcium food D.take in fewer vegetables
30.What suggestion does the author give the parents?
A.They must watch TV with their children. B.They can’t do what they don’t want their children to do.
C.They should pay attention to nutrition in diets. D.They should forbid the children to watch TV.
31.The underlined word “curbing” in the last paragraph can be replaced by ______.
    A.stopping B.checking C.adding D.controlling
    D
The effects of noise can reach organisms (生物体) without ears. Because of the way living things rely on each other, noise pollution may actually stop some forests from growing, a new study suggests. In a New Mexico woodland of pine trees, researchers found far fewer tree seedlings (小苗) in noisy sites than they did in quiet ones.
The study area is dotted with gas wells, some of which are quiet and some of which have compressors (压缩机) that create a constant noise. This allowed Jennifer Phillips, a behavioral ecologist at Texas A&M University-San Antonio and her colleagues to compare sites that were similar except, for noise level. In areas that had been noisy for at least 15 years, the researchers found only about 13 pine seedlings, compared with 55 pine seedlings per hectare (公顷) in quiet areas.
The differences in plant growth were probably caused by changes in animal behavior, said Philips. For example, noise might drive away certain pollinators (传粉昆虫) such as bees, bats and moths. In the case of pine trees, the problem was likely a lack of animals to disperse seeds. Pines depend on birds to carry their seeds away from the parent tree, and birds are known to avoid noise. The differences between the sites aren’t yet obvious to someone walking through them, said Sarah Termondt, a botanist (植物学家) with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service who helped conduct the study. That’s probably because pines are slow-growing, with most of the mature trees in such woodlands being over a century old.
The study raises questions about the future of the area. “If the noise stays there long term, are we going to lose this important ecosystem of the pine which supports so much wildlife?” said Phillips. The study was published today in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society.
32.What does the new study focus on?
A.The harm of noise pollution to insects. B.The way the organisms receive noise.
C.The influence of noise pollution on plants. D.The effects of noise pollution on humans.
33.What can be learned from paragraph 2 and 3?
A.The study sites are different in many ways including their noise level.
B.Gas wells dotted in the area provide favorable conditions for the study.
C.It is difficult for plants to live without noise and animals.
D.People can easily find the difference between the noisy and the quiet sites.
34.What does the underlined word “mature” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A.Grown-up. B.Thin. C.Seedling. D.Tall.
35.What does Phillips mean by saying the words in the last paragraph?
A.Noise pollution could be harmful with the power to change ecosystems.
B.Noise pollution is obviously a trouble that can be avoided.
C.The pine forest is important because it supports so much wildlife.
D.Wildlife should be well protected for the future of this area.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Smartwatches and fitness trackers (健身追踪器) have gained popularity recently. These tools can record your daily steps, heart rates, etc. 36 If yes, it might be a sign that you’re addicted (上瘾) to your fitness tracker.
37 If you keep setting unrealistic daily goals that involve working out for too long, and if you begin to ignore friends and responsibilities to make time for your workout, then you’re most probably addicted to your fitness tracker.
It’s a struggle to overcome the addiction to fitness trackers. 38 For example, the number in your smart watch showing how far you’ve come can give you a sense of achievement.
Of course, failing to meet your daily goal can be discouraging. You might focus on your shortcomings rather than your progress. Another problem is that you might find yourself paying too much attention to the step number rather than how your body feels. 39
Therefore, if you’re spending too much time looking at your smartwatch, limit your daily step count to a comfortable level. 40 For example, concentrating on your hobbies or socializing with friends can be a great way to keep your mind on other things.
    A.Don’t overuse your smartwatch.
    B.It doesn’t convey what you’re really feeling.
C.After all, reaching a daily step count can be so attractive.
D.How can you tell whether you’re addicted to your fitness tracker?
E.Actually, this addiction to step count can be risky, mentally and physically.
F.However, do you find yourself checking your steps and heart rates too often?
G.Besides, you can find other things to do that don’t involve checking your fitness tracker.

When Micah was a child, I used to do many things with her. Later, I got promoted and was always on constant business holidays. 3 years’ devotion to work resulted in my absence from her life and now she was a teenage girl. Recently, I eventually managed to have abundant time to accompany (陪伴) her.
For the last few weeks, Micah had watched mockingbirds make a nest (窝) in a tree and lay eggs there. Sometimes, I came to accompany her without being invited. But whenever I made an attempt to break the ice, “I’m good” was about all she said to me. Code for “Leave me alone”.
“Why doesn’t she want to do things with me?” I thought as I set the table for dinner one evening, hoping for an emotion bridge to reappear between us. Did she feel hurt with my long absence or feel ignored? Lost in thought, I was seeking to mend the relationship.
“Mom!” Micah yelled suddenly. “Come quick!”
Surprised, I rushed out, only to find a little baby bird on the ground, weak and helpless. My eyes went to the branches above.
“The wind must have blown him out of the nest,” I said.
“No, it was Mr. Whiskers-our cat. You let him go outside!” Micah said, a bit angry.
Looking at the nest without the parents, “I’m sorry,” I said and put the bird in my palm cautiously and gently. She didn’t respond, but did not refused my offer to help, either. Deciding to take care of the little baby till it became independent, I placed it in its nest. “What should we do next?” I asked. No response again. Instead, Micah went inside and hopped on her iPad. “Bird videos?” I asked. “Yes, I’m finding out what to feed it,” she said seriously.
