TapescriptLet’s mve n t talk abut the bjectives f educatin.Fr me, educatin has three main bjectives. Firstly, it is t gain knwledge. Obviusly, certain kinds f knwledge are necessary nt nly t pursue certain careers but als t cntribute t the wrld. Fr example, we need t learn maths t understand finance and ecnmics; we need t be able t read, s that we are able t cmmunicate and expse urselves t new things. Besides, educatin prvides anther deeper kind f knwledge, which lets us understand hw the surrunding wrld wrks. It gives us insights int hw peple think and the attitude we need in rder t understand peple f different cultures.Secndly, educatin ges beynd knwledge; it prepares individuals fr a well-runded life in sciety. In ther wrds, it prvides learners with the tls t develp skills, t think fr themselves and t cntinue learning thrughut their lives. Fr example, educatin can help individuals develp critical thinking skills, which will prevent them frm fllwing uncritically traditinal ways and will enable them t act based n judgement.
Thirdly, educatin establishes cre values and prepares yu fr scial life. It helps yu t understand what is wrng and what is right, explre the truth and develp cgnitin, regardless f whether it’s easy r what thers’ pinins are; it als helps yu learn hw t interact with ther peple in a civil manner, regardless f natinality, race r class. It makes peple behave with integrity, regardless f backgrund and circumstances. Therefre, there will be mre critical, kind, hnest and truthful citizens in sciety. Eventually, educatin als enables learners t establish the right values and attitudes, as well as frm gd habits s that they can becme respnsible citizens as well.In cnclusin, educatin is imprtant nt nly because it facilitates individual develpment, but als prmtes scial and natinal develpment. Referring back t the definitin prvided at the very beginning, educatin facilitates the develpment f an individual physically, mentally, mrally and academically, s that the individual can make effective cntributins t scial develpment.Any questins?

Tapescript(S=A student J=Prfessr James)S: Prfessr James, thank yu very much fr the very insightful talk. It makes me rethink the bjectives f educatin. My questin is: in rder t achieve the main bjectives f educatin, what shuld teachers and students d respectively?J: That is a very gd questin. Let’s first talk abut teachers’ respnsibility. I think a teacher’s tp pririty is t facilitate students’ learning. That means a teacher’s jb is nt just t pass n knwledge and skills t students, but it’s mre imprtant t stimulate students’ interests in learning and teach them t think critically and creatively. Als, a teacher needs t supprt students’ learning by prviding rich resurces and helping them learn t use the right strategies t make learning mre effective.
S: Thank yu. What abut the students’ respnsibility?J: Well, I believe it is the students’ respnsibility t take the initiative t becme autnmus learners. That’s why students need t have clear learning gals fr themselves and t learn hw t analyse, cmpare and evaluate what is taught. Anther thing that’s imprtant fr students is that they need t make prper judgements t guide their wn beliefs and actins, and it’s a brilliant idea t demnstrate what they have learnt when assessed.S: Thank yu.
