In math class, for example, we used to add, subtract, multiply and divide in our heads. Kids don't use their heads any more, instead, they use calculators (计算器).
Most families have computers now. In the past we didn't have computers. We didn't even have lights. My mother used to spend all day cooking in the kitchen. But now nobody eats home-cooked food any more.

Isn't fast food delicious? Aren't fast food restaurants cool? …The answer to these questions is yes.
However, there are growing facts that fast food is one of the worst parts of modern life. And studies have shown that burgers and fried chicken, which we enjoy so much, can cause a lot of health problems.
In spite of(尽管)this, why are fast food restaurants so attractive(吸引人的)? The first and most important reason is that their service is fast. Their staff are friendly and very smart-looking in their clean and bright uniforms. Moreover, most fast food restaurants are near places that people always pass by. It is so easy to grab a burger and eat on the way to work.
Fast food is often so conveniently packed that it will not cause a mess even if you stand and eat it. Fast food restaurants are also very clean. A lot of clever ads(广告) have made them the coolest places in town, but none of them has ever told and will never tell you that too much fast food is not good for your health.
Such attractive places are selling junk food! Isn't it a pity? Is there a way to change the fast food restaurants into special places where you get the best possible, healthy and fresh food?
Well, why not?
As people realize the health problems that fast food causes, it is quite likely that fast food restaurants may go out of date. It may happen sooner or later. Therefore, instead of resisting(抵制)fast food restaurants, a better idea may be to persuade(说服)them to change their menu! Fast food restaurants can be places to go to when you want to eat something that will be good for your body. If they could combine(结合)healthy food with their speed of service, delicious tastes and comfortable feelings, that will be the next best thing on the earth for the human beings!

How would you feel if someone decided to take away your park? Well, that's what's happening in my community(社区). There's a park that some people want to turn into a golf course(高尔夫球场). Let me tell you why I think it's a bad idea.
First, a community park should open for everyone. But not everyone likes golf, so not everyone will get to use the course.
Second, to build the golf course, lots of playground equipment(设备) will have to be moved or knocked down, which is a waste of time and money. It's also a waste of good equipment.
Third, what about giving young people something to do? Not all kids like golf. At the moment, the park has a skating place and a playground, which children like a lot. If you turn the park into a golf course, these kids won't have anywhere to go and anything to do. This means that they will stay at home and turn on a video game instead of getting some exercise. It also means that they might be out on the street causing trouble. Wouldn't it be better to give them something to do at the park?
Finally, golf is expensive. Building and maintaining(维护) a golf course will cost a lot of money. Who is going to pay to maintain the golf course?
Turning our park into a golf course is a bad idea. I hope we can have a community meeting before plans go any further.
63. What does some people want to change the park into?
A. A golf club. B. A golf course. C. A park. D. A skating place.

You've been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you're a reader, you have another way to learn words. What should you do when you come to a word and you think you don't know what it means? 73 .
Say it
First sound it out. Then say it to yourself. 74 Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don't know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read-you have the word!
Use context(上下文)
If this doesn't work, take the next step: look at the context—the other words and sentences around it. Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway. 75
Rain and in the doorway might give you helpful information.
76
If the context doesn't help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know? These can help you understand what it means. If you don't know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a mine is a place underground where people get coal and other valuable things. A lot of times, -er at the end of a word means “a person who does something”. So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
Look it up.
If the three steps above don't work, you can look it up. 77 —either a book or online.
Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don't know.
A. Use word parts.
B. Look at the words.
C. It might sound like a word you know.
D. You can find the word in a dictionary.
E. Following some easy steps can help you.
F. We can learn the word by speaking it out.
G. If the word shelter doesn't look familiar. Look at the words around it.
V.补全对话(每小题1分,共5分)
从方框中选择适当的句子补全对话,使对话通顺、合理、意思完整.其中有两项多余.

To go with the Civil Reading, our school has done a survey and found that 56% of the students spend less than one hour reading after class each day, while 33% read for 1 to 2 hours, and only 11% read for more than 3 hours.
This is not satisfying. As we all know, reading makes a full man. Reading not only increases our knowledge, improves our ability to solve problems, but also helps us form a good habit and makes our life colorful.
As students, it’s time for us to read more. Let’s start reading clubs, set classroom bookshelves and organize reading competitions, so that we can do better in our study.
