In late February, my dad asked me if I wanted to go fishing with him. I said yes. My whole family, minus one of my sisters, would be going.
On the day we left I was excited to go on the trip. As soon as we got there, I unpacked all the things I had in the bedroom. My bedroom was small and had two bunk beds on either side of the room. The room made me feel like I was in someone’s grandma’s house. It was late by the time we got to the house, so I went to bed quickly.
The next morning I got up and my dad said that we would board the boat for just something to do. As we were in the car, I noticed that it was raining pretty hard outside.
Just then another boat approached us. A man with heavy beard shouted at us, claiming that it was not a good day for boating. He warned us to go back, but we thought nothing of it. The boat was pretty nice. It had a covering over the front side of the boat and seats in the back.
We got out to the water, and the waves started to pick up a little. As we got out to the water a little farther I thought to myself,“Wouldn’t it be funny if the boat starts sinking?”
Apparently, my thought was starting to come into reality, as the waves started picking up even more. I looked at my sister with a worried look on my face. She also looked worried.
The boat started tipping more as the waves spilled into the boat. My sister and I started screaming. I looked at my dad and he had a worried look on his face too. That was how I knew that things were getting worse.
My dad usually never gets worried about these sorts of things. The water was about knee high on my sister and me. The boat kept rocking from side to side.

I frequently joke that my family heirlooms (传家宝)are plastic. My parents grew up poor and over the years, as a family we were comfortable but didn’t have a lot of things which would be considered luxuries: jewelry, family vacations, china, fancy cars, etc. My father went on a trip to Italy with my aunts one year and brought my mother a ring. It was her favorite stone. She valued that ring because it was one of the nicest things she ever had and represented my dad’s love for her. Sometimes they quarreled but had a deep love for each other. He died in 1980, aged 53 after a difficult battle with cancer.
She had lost some weight and wore the ring to work on a different finger. During her shift the ring slipped off and she realized it the following day. She was sick about it after having tried to find it with no luck. At the point when I talked to her she was trying to face the fact that she would never see it again. Her voice sounded hollow and weak which I assumed was due to the nature of the conversation. She choked back some tears.
I decided to look for the ring at my mom’s work. She was working at the Burlington Coat Factory Department store at the time in the Youth Dept. The Youth Dept was huge and packed with clothes, toys and tables. It was always a mess even when someone was working in it. I started row by row crawling (爬行) on the floor to see if I could find the ring under al the clothes. As I worked my way through the Youth Dept, I tried not to panic. I was amazed that no one asked me what I was doing. At that time I encountered one of my mom’s co-workers who didn’t understand English very well and tried to explain what I was doing. She didn’t seem to understand but she didn’t try to stop me either.

To celebrate International Firefighters’ Day, a town’s special school for orphans held a special meet and greeted with the local fire department. That year, the firemen had stopped a forest fire before it could reach houses and buildings. The local newspaper celebrated their feat(功绩)with a front-page story.
The town’s firefighters came to the school dressed in uniform and answered all the kids’ questions. Captain Joshua was the department leader and explained each team member’s role.
After the demonstration, the kids presented the firemen with drawings they had made in class. All of the pictures were inspired by the firemen’s heroics.
A young boy named David approached Joshua with his drawing. Joshua noticed that the young boy had a birthmark in the same spot as his burn mark.
“Nice drawing, little man. Hey, I guess we’re kind of the same,” Joshua told him while pointing at his burn mark. David blushed and smiled. The young boy had another request for Joshua but was too shy to ask at first. David turned to his teacher, Mrs Humphries, for approval, and she gave him a thumbs up.
“Would it be all right if I came to the fire station to see all the equipment and look at the trucks?” David asked timidly. The young boy explained that he dreamed of one day becoming a fireman, which is why he wanted to learn as much as possible.
Captain Joshua told David he would be happy to give the tour, but only if Mrs Humphries agreed. “I’d be happy to accompany you and David on a tour of the station, but there is some- thing you should know, ” Mrs Humphries told the captain.
While watching the young boy playing with his friends, the teacher took a deep breath before saying, “The reason why he’s so obsessed(着迷的)with firemen is that he lost his parents in a fire. ” Captain Joshua decided that the trip would be beneficial for David and agreed to the tour.

Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests, green fields, and a vast ocean. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their borne. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.
Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace.
“So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back?" Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. “How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumb up and hugged the sisters.

I was taking a trip from Texas to the Bahamas for a vacation, having prepared for this trip for a long time. After packing all my belongings and heading to the airport, I could only think about all the pleasant times I would have at the tropical(热带)island. I already had everything planned out, first I would go diving, then visit the queen’s stairs, and eventually go swimming with the dolphins. The thoughts made my heart race; I could even smell the fresh ocean breeze right now.
Finally, I made it into the airport, just in time to make my flight. As I boarded the plane, I had a smile stretched along my face. I slid right into my seat, sitting mid row right in the middle of two other passengers. One of them was a fairly attractive young female and the other was an elderly lady who looked to be in her 70s. Her hair was as gray as a thunderstorm cloud and the wrinkles on her skin matched the ones on my shirt.
“We should depart in about five minutes,” The pilot responded. At that time, I had no idea what was soon incoming after this announcement. I used to fly with my mom a whole bunch of times as a kid, the people beside me seeming to be taking it well as well.
I went to sleep and woke up to various screaming and yelling on the plane; everything was so chaotic that it looked straight out of a movie scene. The lights in the airplane started flickering(闪烁), and I could feel the bumps the plane was making. Was I still dreaming? I looked to my left and the seat was empty! Sweat started to run down my face. The young female was gone!
“Mommy!” A little girl screamed. I couldn’t control it anymore and tears started rolling down my face. The plane shook more, seeming the end was nearing.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are experiencing an extreme clear air turbulence(乱流),” the pilot explained. “The plane is being adjusted. Please remain seated.”

My adventure short story took place in Nepal, where I did the Mohare Danda Trek — which was no easy feat; however, in my opinion, it is truly one of the best hiking trails in the world. The Mohare Danda is one of Nepal’s newest treks, opened in 2010 as an Eco-trek to help support and develop the Parbat and Myagdi districts.
I’ve always enjoyed such kind of hikes as my friends and I conquer one destination after another. As you gaze upon the mountain peaks, interact with locals, and take in the nature that surrounds you, it’s hard not to feel immense gratitude for such adventures. This is particularly true when we reached the top of Mohare Danda at 3,313 meters (10, 869feet) and realized just how far we’d come.
It was a stunning hike, though my first day got off to a difficult start as I found myself violently ill. Ascending(爬升)higher and higher, sweat pouring down my face and my backpack threatening to pull me to the ground, I stopped constantly to gasp for breath and throw up quite a bit — until we reached the high altitude tea house where we’d be staying the night. The accommodation was rough, to say the least, which was a small family-run hotel with squat toilets, spiders, and no showers.
While the group went in for tea, I laid on the ground, nearly crying from the physical pain from the challenging hike and discomfort from the sickness. At that moment, I truly didn’t think I could do it. But then I opened my eyes to the beauty that surrounded me— scattered wild flowers all over the mountains, feasting yaks and buffaloes, high-altitude villages and the stunning terrain of the Annapurna Himalayas, which were the type of beauty you truly can’t find anywhere else —and realized that if I gave up now I’d never forgive myself.
The hotel owner was very kind, who brought me warm water and some medicine. He also suggested that I bring some oxygen just in case, and I did so, which turned out to be life-saving.

Sandy and Jane came to see the jobo tree on the hilltop again. Jobos were their favorite fruit, but the tree belonged to a lady who lived in the house by the hill. They heard she was difficult, but that sometimes she would give fruit in return for an errand(差使)
The girls finally gathered their courage to knock on her door. An elderly woman with a fierce look answered, staring down at the girls. “We heard …”said Sandy, her voice shaky, “that you give jobos in payment for running an errand.”
The lady raised one eyebrow, then went into the kitchen and took two baskets. She pushed them into the girls’ hands.“Go fill these with jobos, and come right back.”
The girls raced up the hill to the tree and filled the baskets with the ripest jobos. Back at the house, the lady filled a bag with rice and handed it to Sandy. “Take this bag and one basket of jobos to the Brown family. And ask them for the payment,” the lady added with a tight smile.“If you return without the payment, you won’t get the fruit.”
The girls struggled all the way with the bag and the basket. When they were there, Mrs. Brown answered the door. Inside on the floor were three little children, each painting something on papers.
Mr. Brown was lying sick in bed.Times were hard.
The girls handed her the food.“This is from the lady with the jobo tree, ” said Sandy.
“She asked for the payment, too.”Jane said awkwardly.
“The payment! The payment!” The children repeated, waving the paper in their hands happily.
Sandy and Jane looked at each other strangely. With a smile, Mrs. Brown handed Sandy a large sealed(密封的)envelope so full that it was almost starting to break open. The girls said goodbye and left quickly. “I wonder,” Sandy murmured, “whether Mrs. Brown can afford to pay for that food.”

Whenever asked why I chose to become a doctor, I would always explain by telling the story of my adolescence (青春期).
As a fresh graduate of high school, I found it difficult to choose a career path before college. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: be-coming an engineer, a doctor or a financial worker. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement (实习) to experience business for a month in an international company, and then medicine for another month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I began a month’s placement at a foreign bank. I got to know the rules of financial world, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early at 7 a.m., compared to 9 a.m. at the bank, and were filled with endless duties and the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing environment, better working hours and less stress; while the hospital was full of excitement and difficult studying and training. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

Factoring in the biting wind, I knew the temperature was below zero. The bitter cold cut through my Californian sensibilities, as well as my enthusiasm as a tourist, so I moved ;to the nearest door for warmth and found myself in a station.
I settled onto one of the public benches with a steaming cup of coffee-waiting for feeling to return to my fingers and toes-and relaxed to watch the people around.
Several tables of diners spilled out into the great hall from the American Restaurant, and smells of the food caused me to consider an early dinner. I observed a man seated nearby and, from the longing in his eyes, realized that he, too, noticed the tasty food. His skinny body, chapped (皲裂的) hands and shabby clothes nearly shouted, “Homeless, homeless!”
I wondered how long it had been since he last ate.
Half expecting him to approach me for a handout (施舍物), I almost welcomed such a request. He never did. The longer I took in the scene, the crueler his situation seemed. My head and heart experienced a’ silent war, one telling me to mind my own business, and the other urging a trip to the food court on his behalf.
While my internal debate went on, a well-dressed young couple approached him. “Excuse me, sir,” the husband began. “My wife and I just finished eating, and our appetites weren’t as big as we thought. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” He extended a large container.
“God bless you both,” came the grateful reply.
Pleased, yet upset by my own lack of action, I continued to watch. The man rearranged the soup crackers, inspected the sandwich and stirred the salad dressing. Then, slowly he lifted the soup lid, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl. At last, he unwrapped the plastic spoon, filled it to overflowing, lifted it toward his mouth and, all of a sudden, stopped short.
I turned my head to follow his narrow-eyed gaze.

The Christmas holidays were fast approaching, and we had ordered many gifts online. So, when the doorbell rang, I was sure some of the packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful calico kitten (杂色猫) sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there?
We figured that someone had found the kitten somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed we would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
My husband called her our little angel, so we named her accordingly. She had a calm aura (气质) about her as she walked straight into our home and hearts, fitting in perfectly. It seemed as if she was always meant to be in this big house with us. She was an old soul and turned out to be the perfect companion. Always by my side, she was more like a puppy than a kitten. Wise beyond her years, she enjoyed wandering through the tunnels and mysterious rooms as much as I did, but with much less fear. Angelica the calico was courageous.
So, I took a page from her book and decided to be brave, too. There was an underground stone cellar (地窖) I had been eager to explore. The only way in was down a rickety (摇晃的) ladder to its murky depths. I guessed it was an old root cellar, probably twelve feet deep.
I had promised my husband that I wouldn’t explore dangerous areas unless he or someone else was around. Though I knew I was stretching it, I figured that Angelica would count as my companion. I was ready to explore this cellar, and so was she.
I equipped myself with a good flashlight and warm clothes, and carefully started down the rickety ladder while Angelica was looking down at me from above. Faint crack and sudden crash were what I could remember.
