At the age of seven I started taking violin lessons. I practiced half an hour every day, went to lessons once a week, and played in a group concert from time to time. Like most kids, I’m not a big fan of practising. If my parents hadn’t been there to make me practice, I probably would have put down my violin and never have picked it up again.
I met Moira when I was 11 at an Irish music party. Moira hosted the party that night, playing the violin, singing and dancing. She made sure that everyone in the room got involved and had a great time. I immediately fell in love with the music she played and the energy that she brought to it. Just a few days after that party, I took my first lesson with Moira, and I continued taking lessons with Moira throughout middle school.
When I started playing the violin with Moira, playing music became something that I loved. She introduced me to so many types of music, from Irish to Old Time, to Cajun music. Moira also taught me to play the guitar. Soon we started performing together and were shocked to discover that people actually wanted to hear us! When I began to play the violin, practicing was something that I did at home in my living room, but under Moira’s influence it quickly became something that I did everywhere. I played on street corners, at festivals, at the beach, at parties, at weddings, and late at night in my friends’ kitchens.
Moira took the music out of the classroom and brought it to life. Her passion was not only for playing music, but also for sharing it. My time with Moira allowed me to grow both musically and personally. I have met so many special people and had so many memorable experiences. Moira has proven to be the most important influence in my musical development, and also my invaluable friend.
    4. How did the author feel about violin practice at the beginning?
    A. Interesting. B. Challenging. C. Inspiring. D. Unexciting.
    5. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. The writer was proud of Moira’s achievements in music.
    B. The writer became a popular local violinist.
    C. The writer spent all her spare time playing the violin.
    D. The writer had more self-confidence in terms of performing.
    6. What can we know from the last paragraph?
    A. Classroom was not a suitable place for Moira to practice any more.
    B. Moira helped the writer a lot with her personal life experience.
    C. Moira played a significant role in the writer’s musical progress.
    D. Moira was very thankful for the writer’s musical support.
    7. What would be the best title for the passage?
    A. My Way to Success B. My Invaluable Friend
    C. Middle School Musical D. How I Learned the Violin
D 5. D 6. C 7. B

A bronze horse head sculpture a treasure of China’s Old Summer Palace that went missing 160 years ago, returned to its original palace home Tuesday. It is the first time that a priceless cultural artifact from the Old Summer Palace has been sent from abroad and then returned to be kept there.
Twelve animal head sculptures once formed a zodiac (生肖) water clock in Beijing’s Yuanmingyuan, built by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. The originals were looted (抢劫) from the royal garden by Anglo-French allied forces in 1860 during the second Opium War.
Macao billionaire Stanley Ho bought the bronze horse head and decided to donate it to the National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA) and return it to its original home. The NCHA has spent one year refurbishing (刷新) the old Zhengjue Temple, the main place of worship for Qing Dynasty emperors in the garden, to an exhibition venue.
An exhibition in memory of the return of the horse head has kicked off at the temple, displaying about 100 items including relics and photographs. “The horse head sculpture was returned to its original palace home amid the challenges brought by COVID-19,” said an official. “It also led to an all-round upgrade of security at the Old Summer Palace, which allows for long-term exhibitions.”
“There is international consensus (共识) on returning lost cultural relics to their original homes and China’s efforts to bring relics home in recent years have enhanced that consensus,” he added.
    8. What do we know about the bronze horse head sculpture?
    A. It was once stolen by French soldiers.

    C. It has been put at its original location.
    D. It was sold about 160 years ago.

    11. What can we infer from what the official said?
    A. China is sure to get all the lost important cultural treasures back.
    B. China has contributed greatly to the international consensus in recent years.
    C. Returning lost cultural relics to their original homes has a long way to go.
    D. More Chinese will buy lost important cultural relics from foreign countries.
C 9. A 10. A 11. B

选项A“Started (开始)”;选项B“Prepared (准备)”;选项C“Organized (组织)”;选项D“Shown (展示)”。故选A。

Bluefin tuna are perfectly streamlined and equipped with cutting-edge biological gear. They are found in all the oceans except around the North and South Poles. This kind of tuna is a modern fish, yet its relationship with humanity is ancient. Japanese fishermen and the Haida people of the Pacific Northwest have caught Pacific bluefin for more than 5,000 years.
But this relationship with humans has lately been damaged. They are today among the most over-fished species on Earth.
Captain Dennis Cameron and his crew left port in his fishing boat. They were on a different kind of fishing trip. They had come to tag and measure bluefin. While Cameron went toward deep water, Steve Wilson, a Stanford University researcher who works with the Tuna Research and Conservation Center (TRCC), checked the satellite tags he hoped to attach to bluefin that day.
After another 20 minutes, they successfully tagged a big bluefin. On his laptop the night before, Wilson had programmed the satellite tag to release in a little over nine months. The tag will rise to the ocean’s surface and send information about bluefin’s movements to TRCC’s base in California.
The locations of bluefin, as reported by the many satellite tags over the years, are represented on the map by small circles in different colors. Western bluefin—represented as reddish orange circles-pack the Gulf of Mexico, their spawning (产卵) grounds. From there they spread eastward into the western Atlantic and cross over to the eastern Atlantic, reaching all the way to Portugal and Spain. Eastern bluefin—represented as white circles—fill their Mediterranean spawning grounds, and from there spread westward, crossing over to the western Atlantic, covering the coastal waters of the United States and Canada.
But an alarming lesson lies hidden at Hopkins Marine Station. Established by Stanford University in 1892, it was the first marine lab on the west coast of the United States. It sold buildings set during the age of sardines, which ended 60 years ago due to overfishing. By the 1980s sardine populations had started to come back a little, but now they are falling again.
    12. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
    A. To introduce bluefin as a rare fish. B. To highlight the role of bluefin in biology.
    C. To give reasons for bluefin’s decline. D. To explain our long history with bluefin.
    13. Why did Steve Wilson and his team want to tag bluefin?
    A. They could record the spawning process of bluefin.
    B. They could keep track of bluefin’s whereabouts.
    C. They could know where to go deep sea fishing.
    D. They could collect data of bluefin’s eating habits.
    14. Which of the following places is unlikely for western bluefin to spawn?
    A. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. B. Off the coast of Spain and Portugal.
    C. In the middle of Mediterranean Sea. D. Oft the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
    15. Why does the author discuss sardines in the last paragraph?
    A. To warn that bluefin could face a similar fate.
    B. To give hope of bringing back fish populations.
    C. To compare the previous outcome with the current one.
    D. To explain the cause of their decline remains unknown.
D 13. B 14. C 15. A
根据第一段的“The bluefin is a modern fish, yet its relationship with humanity is ancient. Japanese fishermen and the Haida people of the Pacific Northwest have caught Pacific bluefin for more than 5,000 years.(蓝鳍金枪鱼是一种现代鱼类,但它与人类的关系却很古老。日本渔民和太平洋西北部的海达人捕捞太平洋蓝鳍金枪鱼已有5000多年的历史)”可知,第一段的目的是解释我们和蓝鳍金枪鱼的悠久历史。故选D。
    【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段的“The tag will rise to the ocean’s surface and send information about bluefin’s movements to TRCC’s base in California.(这个标签将上升到海洋表面,并将金枪鱼活动的信息发送到TRCC位于加州的总部)”可知,Steve Wilson和他的团队想给蓝鳍金枪鱼贴上标签是因为这样他们可以追踪蓝鳍金枪鱼的活动。
根据倒数第二段的“Western bluefin—represented as reddish orange circles-pack the Gulf of Mexico, their spawning (产卵) grounds. From there they spread eastward into the western Atlantic and cross over to the eastern Atlantic, reaching all the way to Portugal and Spain. Eastern bluefin—represented as white circles—fill their Mediterranean spawning grounds, and from there spread westward, crossing over to the western Atlantic, covering the coastal waters of the United States and Canada.(西部蓝鳍金枪鱼——用红橘色的圆圈表示——聚集在它们的产卵地墨西哥湾。从那里,它们向东延伸到西大西洋,然后越过大西洋到达东大西洋,一直到达葡萄牙和西班牙。东部蓝鳍金枪鱼——用白色圆圈表示——填满了它们在地中海的产卵地,并从那里向西扩散,跨越到西大西洋,覆盖了美国和加拿大的沿海水域)”可知,在地中海中部没有发现西方蓝鳍金枪鱼,故选C。
    【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“But an alarming lesson lies hidden at Hopkins Marine Station.(但霍普金斯海洋站却隐藏着一个令人担忧的教训)”和“It sold buildings set during the age of sardines, which ended 60 years ago due to overfishing. By the 1980s sardine populations had started to come back a little, but now they are falling again.(它出售沙丁鱼时代的建筑,60年前,由于过度捕捞,沙丁鱼时代结束了。到20世纪80年代,沙丁鱼的数量开始略有回升,但现在又开始下降)”可知,作者在最后一段讨论沙丁鱼的目的是警告蓝鳍金枪鱼可能面临同样的命运。故选A。

Nowadays, social media like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter are becoming more and more popular. People have completely made social media part of their daily lives. As a result, many people have developed an Internet personality.
The Internet personality I am talking about is the one we shape on our social media sites. We are always posting information about ourselves for other people to know even when it can be completely untrue. Some people even go so far as to spend money in buying flowers or “likes” or buying a very expensive camera for their friends to take photos of them. I find it unbelievable. The time and energy spent on these silly things can only make us want to be accepted by more people.
Social media are also a modern cause of depression: People see the perfect lives of others and consider their own imperfect lives as bad. Even kids deal with this. They don’t realize that the reason why they struggle to love themselves is that they spend all day receiving untrue information.
I find that many people spend more time and energy in making sure that their online personality is worth accepting rather than caring for their real presence. So many times I have seen confident and beautiful girls on social media. But in the real world, they are extremely shy. They hardly talk to anyone and spend all their time using the phone.
Social media have gone so far as to even negatively affect marriages. This is because of the fact that there are now “Instagram husbands”—people whose use is to take perfect photos of their partners throughout the day. They spend a lot of time doing that whether they like it or not. Needless to say, social media likely influence relationships in a negative way.
I think everyone should stop using social media at least for a few months to experience the difference it makes to them. They may find life is very different and much better.
    16. What does “the Internet personality” in the passage refer to?
    A. The hope to develop a better personality.
    B. The personality developed through social media.
    C. The true personality shown by us on social media.
    D. The information we get about others on social media.
    17. Why are social media a modern cause of depression?
    A. We may read some upsetting news.
    B. We have to try very hard to be accepted.
    C. We can’t really find much useful information.
    D. We feel sad about ourselves through comparing.
    18. What does the example given in Paragraph 4 show?
    A. Shy people can also become confident.
    B. Social media make people become more energetic.
    C. Social media make people ignore their true presence.
    D. People today don’t consider their presence important.
    19. What’s most probably the author’s attitude towards people’s using social media?
    A. Uninterested. B. Negative.
    C. Uncertain. D. Supportive.
B 17. D 18. C 19. B

上文“Has your mother or friend told you that you’re an ungrateful person? Do you feel unable to appreciate the world or people around you? Are you obsessed (着迷) with things you don’t have instead of being thankful for what you do have? (你的母亲或朋友有没有告诉你你是一个不懂的感恩的人?你是否觉得无法欣赏周围的世界或人?你是否执着于你所没有的东西,而不去感激你所拥有的?)”提出了三种生活中常见的情况。下文“If so, then you will definitely need to work on being a more grateful person. (如果是这样,那么你肯定需要努力成为一个更感恩的人)”。所以选项B“你也许发现你符合其中的一种情况”,起到承上启下的作用,符合句意和逻辑要求,故选B。
    【21题详解】
上文“Although such encouragement is morally meaningful, it seems still to be too abstract. So, how can you make giving thanks part of your daily routine? (虽然这样的鼓励在道德上是有意义的,但似乎还是太抽象了。那么,你怎么能让表达感恩成为你日常生活的一部分呢?)”可知接下来会给我们介绍感恩的方法,所以选项E “有一些小贴士可以帮助你练习感恩”承接了上文,故选E。
    【22题详解】
根据上文“Stopping playing the victim is the first step you’re supposed to take. (拒绝扮演受害者是你应该采取的第一步)”以及下文“If you want to be grateful, stop complaining to the world, your teachers, your friends and your family about not putting themselves in your shoes, and focus on how much they’ve helped and cared about you. (如果你想感恩,就不要向世界、你的老师、你的朋友和你的家人抱怨他们没有设身处地为你着想,而要关注他们对你的帮助和关心)”可知,选项F“不懂得感恩的人总是把问题归咎于世界,把所有的过错都归咎于别人”在句意和逻辑上起到衔接上下文的作用。故选F。
    【23题详解】
上文“Volunteering in your community is another effective way to show how grateful you are for what the world has given you. Whether you’re helping clean up a local park, working in a soup kitchen, or teaching children or adults in your community to learn to read, your viewpoints on life will change positively. (在你的社区里做志愿者是另一种有效的方式来表达你对世界给予你的一切的感激之情。无论你是在帮助清理当地的公园,在厨房里工作,还是教社区里的孩子或成年人学习阅读,你的人生观都会发生积极的变化)”,选项C“渐渐地,你会更加感激回报社会的机会”承接上文,表示上文行为的结果,也对应本段主题,通过做志愿者可以让你学会感恩,故选C。
    【24题详解】
此句是本段主题句。根据下文“You can help a neighbor look for a lost dog. You can also help an old lady carry her groceries. You don’t have to search for these opportunities purposefully. Sometimes they will present themselves. (你可以帮邻居找一只丢失的狗。你也可以帮一位老太太搬运食品杂货。你不必刻意寻找这些机会。有时他们自己就会出现) ”可知,帮助别人并不是有目的寻找机会,帮助别人应该是做一些碰到的事情,能帮就要帮的事。所以选项D“做一个善举也是一个练习感恩的好方法”,能概括本段主题,再对比前两段主题句,选项D在句式上也符合要求,故选D。
