B 19. C 20. A
W: Good evening, everyone. I recently learnt Arabic in Cairo as part of my degree. My interest in the language was due to the passion of our Arabic lecturer and as the course progressed, my interest in the culture also grew with it. I considered studying in the Middle East, but ultimately decided on Cairo due to its energetic cultural scene. However, in the city, we faced some challenges, including difficulties finding a hotel and accommodation as we were a group of unmarried individuals. Once settled, the culture shock was intense for some of us. One member of our group returned home within the first week. Luckily I became accustomed to the life in Cairo gradually. The biggest challenge of learning Arabic is the disconnection between the written and the spoken forms. Despite these challenges, learning Arabic has been a rewarding experience, including absorbing myself in the culture and getting to know the locals and even negotiating at a local market. Highlights were being invited to a traditional Arabic meal at one of the locals’ home and being able to confidently communicate. Overall, this experience was outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to learn and grow in interesting ways. I encourage others to consider involving themselves in new cultures and languages. Thanks for listening.

Down House, home of Charles Darwin:
Fun fact
Charles Darwin, his wife, Emma, and their children lived at Down House for 40 years from 1838. Several rooms appear as if the family still live here: with croquet sets thrown into an under-stairs cupboard, a half-played game of backgammon on a side table and Emma’s knitting(毛线) left on a chair in the drawing room. Upstairs, an exhibition showcases Darwin’s voyage aboard HMS Beagle, including a reconstruction of his cabin. Outside, visitors can explore the sheltered gardens which Darwin used as an open-air laboratory, and the greenhouse in which he planted rare plants and devised botanical experiments.
No room at Down House escaped Darwin’s experiments. In the drawing room he once placed a jar of earthworms on the grand piano to see whether they could hear.
Getting there
A 15-minute drive from the A21/Farnborough. Free parking. The R8 bus from Orpington stops nearby (except Sundays) or the 146 bus from Bromley North and South terminates (终点站) in Downe village, half a mile from the property. The nearest railway stations are Chelsfield or Orpington, about four miles away.
Value for money?
It’s £12 (adult), £7.20 (child), or £31.30 (family with 2 adults). Under 5s go free.
Opening hours
Open daily 10am-6pm from 30 March to 30 September; daily 10 a.m. — 5 p.m. between 1 to 31 October. Opening times vary through the winter (check website for details).

When the news came that my mother was hospitalized for a heart attack, I was in Peru on a hiking trip. That evening, before I could board the plane to Italy, I was informed that she had passed away. Sadness and the feeling of not being there for my mother when she needed me most broke all excuses Id made up to stay away trying to make it as a “travel writer”. There wasn’t much I could do to stop that urge to denounce myself.
My mother Tundra stayed in her northern Italian world most of her life, where I always stood out as a freak and the one doing worthless silly things. But my stories from distant places aroused her curiosity and brought her comfort. To her, I was a courageous adventurer, and her words towards my achievements which are in sign if cant now pushed me forward on that unconventional path.
After handling my mother’s affairs in Italy, I decided to leave for Penang Island, one of the most visited places in Penang, Malaysia. With all the international travel I’d done, in truth I’d always treated it more like as top for necessary and urgent breaks, rather than a proper destination. Yet then, I missed its atmosphere that made me feel at home somehow.
Returning there, I reconnected with backwoods by going on hikes. It was hard to put my feelings into words, but the rainforest held something uniquely comforting. This experience was similar to stepping into an ancient, purer world that made one consider human nature and problems. Besides, the sound of strange insects was almost like a language, whispering to me that I should let go of the past, and only focus on current life. Like an oil leak, that suffering fell out of me and into every footprint left.18 months passing, I look back on the time spent in the natural world and timeless environment, knowing I’ve pulled through.
24. What does the underlined word “denounce” mean in the first paragraph?
A. Blame. B. Support. C. Doubt. D. Encourage.
25. What’s the attitude of the author’s mother to his travel?
A. Worried. B. Favorable. C. Disapproving D. Excited.
26. What did Penang Island mean to the author in the past?
A. A special second home. B. A hard-to-reach destination.
C. A distant tourist attraction. D. A much-needed resting place.
27. What does the author intend to tell in the text?
A. Hiking builds up his confidence. B. Penang is a good place to restart.
C. Nature helps him overcome sorrow. D. It’s important to live in the moment.
A 25. B 26. D 27. C
根据第一段的“Sadness and the feeling of not being there for my mother when she needed me most broke all excuses Id made up to stay away trying to make it as a “travel writer”. There wasn’t much I could do to stop that urge to denounce myself.(悲伤和在母亲最需要我的时候没有陪伴在她身边的感觉打破了我为成为一名“旅行作家”而编造的所有借口。我无法阻止denounce自己的冲动)”可知,作者没能在母亲最需要的时候陪在她身边,由此可知,作者会责备自己的去秘鲁旅行的冲动。因此猜测划线词意为“责备”,与blame同义。故选A。
根据第第二段的“To her, I was a courageous adventurer, and her words towards my achievements which are in sign if cant now pushed me forward on that unconventional path.(对她来说,我是一个勇敢的冒险家,而她对我的成就的赞美——尽管现在还没有实现——推动着我走上了那条非常规的道路)”推知,母亲对作者的旅行持支持态度。
根据第三段的“After handling my mother’s affairs in Italy, I decided to leave for Penang Island, one of the most visited places in Penang, Malaysia. With all the international travel I’d done, in truth I’d always treated it more like as top for necessary and urgent breaks, rather than a proper destination. (在意大利处理完母亲的事务后,我决定前往马来西亚槟城市游客最多的地方之一的槟城岛。对于我所做的所有国际旅行,事实上,我总是把它当作必要和紧急休息的首选,而不是一个合适的目的地)”可知,作者把槟榔岛看作是一个必要的休息点。故选D。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,并结合最后一段的“18 months passing, I look back on the time spent in the natural world and timeless environment, knowing I’ve pulled through.(18个月过去了,回首在自然世界和永恒环境中度过的时光,我知道我已经度过了难关)”可知,作者通过在自然中度过时光终于走出了失去母亲以及没能在母亲最需要时陪伴她的痛苦。

T. O. Fuller State Park in Memphis, Tennessee, has been loved for generations and has always been a ground where community has come first. Back in 1938, it was the first park east of the Mississippi river to open for African American visitors. Over 80 years later, the park is continuing its forward-thinking tradition, this time, through a pioneering sustainability project.
A new walking and biking trail has been built through this historic park. Illegally dumped (被丢弃的) tires are not only unpleasant to see, but they’re a dangerous addition to the environment. Rubber, like plastic, is a material that won’t naturally decompose. In a place as hot as Tennessee, these dumped tires often begin to melt and release these harmful gasses into the air. Fortunately, the old tires were sent to Patriot Tire Recycling in Bristol, TN, the only facility in the area that can break down tires in an environmentally sound way. There, the collected tires were safely broken down into the crumble (碎屑) rubber that was eventually used to pave the new trail.
TN State Parks explained how the trail’s construction, which has been in development since 2019, was a joint effort. Officials from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the City of Memphis, Shelby County, and Memphis City Beautiful were all involved in funding this recycling project.
These officials named their initiative the “Tires to Trails” project. Workers from these departments, alongside some 450 volunteers, came together to collect over 24, 000 tires that had been illegally dumped in the area around the park to be recycled.
“This is a perfect example of recycling in full circle, collecting dumped material, then converting it into positive use,” David, a leader of the project, said in a statement.
28. What kind of park is T.O. Fuller State Park?
A. It is a popular park with a good tradition. B. It is the first park welcoming all visitors.
C. It is a park west of the Mississippi river. D. It is a modern park without biking trails.
29. Why are dumped tires a dangerous addition to the environment?
A. They are ugly to see. B. They release harmful gasses.
C. They are made up of plastic. D. They could only be used to pave the new trail.
30. What does David mean in the last paragraph?
A. It is the park’s responsibility to recycle.
B. The park is built on dumped materials.
C. The park successfully recycled dumped tires.
D. It is possible to turn everything into useful things.
31. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Areas of Reusing Tires
B Methods of Rebuilding a Trail
C. Tires Transformed into a New Hiking Trail
D. Officials and People Working Together to Recycle Tires
A 29. B 30. C 31. C

O. Fuller State Park in Memphis, Tennessee, has been loved for generations and has always been a ground where community has come first.(田纳西州Memphis的T. O. Fuller州立公园世世代代受到人们的喜爱,一直是社区至上的地方)”可知,它是一个受欢迎的公园。根据第一段最后一句话“Over 80 years later, the park is continuing its forward-thinking tradition, this time, through a pioneering sustainability project.(80多年后,该公园继续其前瞻性的传统,这一次,通过一个开创性的可持续发展项目)”可知,它是一个有着良好传统的公园,因此T.O. 故选A。
根据第二段中“Rubber, like plastic, is a material that won’t naturally decompose. In a place as hot as Tennessee, these dumped tires often begin to melt and release these harmful gasses into the air.(橡胶和塑料一样,是一种不会自然分解的材料。在像田纳西州这样炎热的地方,这些被丢弃的轮胎经常开始融化,并将这些有害气体释放到空气中)”可知,废弃轮胎会对环境造成危害是因为它们释放有害气体。故选B。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“This is a perfect example of recycling in full circle, collecting dumped material, then converting it into positive use(这是一个循环再利用的完美例子,收集废弃材料,然后将其转化为积极的用途)”可知,David在最后一段的意思是T.
通读全文,尤其是第二段的“Fortunately, the old tires were sent to Patriot Tire Recycling in Bristol, TN, the only facility in the area that can break down tires in an environmentally sound way. There, the collected tires were safely broken down into the crumble (碎屑) rubber that was eventually used to pave the new trail.(幸运的是,旧轮胎被送到了田纳西州Bristol的Patriot Tire Recycling,这是该地区唯一一家可以以环保方式分解轮胎的工厂。在那里,收集到的轮胎被安全地分解成橡胶碎屑,最终用于铺设新的道路)”可知,本篇文章主要讲述了田纳西州的T. O. Fuller State Park在众人合作的基础上对被丢弃的轮胎进行废物利用并用其铺成了一条路的故事,因此最好的题目是C选项“Tires Transformed into a New Hiking Trail(轮胎变成了一条新的徒步旅行路线)”。故选C。
D
Is it true that our brain alone is responsible for human cognition (认知)? What about our body? Is it possible for thought and behaviour to originate from somewhere other than our brain? Psychologists who study Embodied Cognition (EC) ask similar questions. The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure.
If you think about it for a moment, it makes total sense. When you smell something good or hear amusing sounds, certain emotions are awakened. Think about how newborns use their senses to understand the world around them. They don’t have emotions so much as needs — they don’t feel sad, they’re just hungry and need food. Even unborn babies can feel their mothers’ heartbeats and this has a calming effect. In the real world, they cry when they’re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to associate being warm with being loved.
Understandably, theorists have been arguing for years and still disagree on whether the brain is the nerve centre that operates the rest of the body. Older Western philosophers and mainstream language researchers believe this is fact, while EC theorises that the brain and body are working together as an organic supercomputer, processing everything and forming your reactions.
Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction. In one experiment, test subjects were asked to judge people after being handed a hot or a cold drink. They all made warm evaluations when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than coolness. And it works the other way too. In another study, subjects’ fingertip temperatures were measured after being “included” in or “rejected” from a group task. Those who were included felt physically warmer.
For further proof, we can look at the metaphors (比喻) that we use without even thinking. A kind and sympathetic person is frequently referred to as one with a soft heart and someone who is very strong and calm in difficult situations is often described as solid as a rock. And this kind of metaphorical use is common across languages.
Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it? If you’re having a bad day, a warm cup of tea will give you a flash of pleasure. If you know you’re physically cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions.
32. According to the author, what is the significance of EC?
A. It brings us closer to the truth in human cognition.
B. It offers a clearer picture of the shape of human brain.
C. It reveals the major role of the mind in human cognition.
D. It facilitates our understanding of the origin of psychology.
33. Where does the newborns’ understanding of their surroundings start from?
A. Their personal looks. B. Their mental needs.
C. Their inner emotions. D. Their physical feelings.
34. What does the author intend to prove by citing the metaphors in Paragraph 5?
A. Human speech is alive with metaphors.
B. Human senses have effects on thinking.
C. Human language is shaped by visual images.
D. Human emotions are often compared to natural materials.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To deepen the readers’ understanding of EC.
B. To encourage the reader to put EC into practice.
C. To guide the reader onto the path to career success.
D. To share with the reader ways to release their emotions.
A 33. D 34. B 35. B
根据文章第一段第五句话“The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure.(EC理论表明,我们的身体也负责思考或解决问题。更准确地说,思维塑造身体,身体同等程度地塑造思维。)”可推知,EC理论让我们更接近人类认知的真相。故选A。
根据文章第二段第四句话“They don’t have emotions so much as need — they don’t feel sad, they’re just hungry and need food. Even unborn babies can feel their mothers’ heartbeats and this has a calming effect. In the real world, they cry when they’re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to associate being warm with being loved.(他们没有如同需要那么多的情感——他们不会感到悲伤,他们只是饿,需要食物。即使是未出生的婴儿也能感觉到母亲的心跳,这具有镇静作用。在现实世界中,他们冷了就哭,然后被拥抱。这样,他们开始将温暖与被爱联系起来)”可推知,新生儿对周围环境的理解依靠的是身体感觉。故选D。
34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段第一句话“For further proof, we can look at the metaphors (比喻) that we use without even thinking.(为了进一步证明,我们可以看看我们不假思索就使用的比喻)”和第四段第一句话“Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction.(更多的研究支持了身心互动)”可知,两个自然段都是为了证明上文第三段EC的观点“Older Western philosophers and mainstream language researchers believe this is fact, while EC theorises that the brain and body are working together as an organic supercomputer, processing everything and forming your reactions.(年长的西方哲学家和主流语言研究人员认为这是事实,而EC理论认为大脑和身体作为一台有机的超级计算机协同工作,处理一切并形成反应)”。
根据最后一段第一句话“Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it? (既然您已经掌握了身心互动的知识,为什么不使用它呢?)”以及下文中列举的两种现实生活中的情况“If you’re having a bad day, a warm cup of tea will give you a flash of pleasure. If you know you’re physically cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions. (如果你今天过得很糟糕,一杯温暖的茶会给你带来一瞬间的快乐。如果你知道自己身体很冷,在做出任何人际关系决定之前先热身。)”可推知,最后一段作者鼓励读者把 EC 理论运用于现实生活中。故选B。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Jacob sat on the grass outside Grandma’s house. He held a piece of paper. He folded the paper this way and made a point. Then he folded it that way and this way and made wings. Jacob threw his paper airplane high into the air. It twisted (盘旋), turned and fell to the ground.
Grandma looked up from her gardening as Jacob folded another piece of paper. He threw the new plane into the air. It went up, came down and bounced off the ground.
“You know,” said Grandma, “there’s a secret airport just through those trees. Want to see?”
“An airport!” Jacob jumped up. “Near your house?” Jacob took Grandma’s hand, and they followed a path through the trees. They stopped when they reached a wide river.
Tik-tik-tik, tik-tik-tik, noises filled the air.
“The airport sounds busy today,” said Grandma. She pointed through the trees. “Watch carefully.”
Jacob looked across the river. He only saw trees, no airplanes. He looked into the sky. He only saw clouds and sunshine.
Raaaawnk!
A large gray-blue bird with wide wings and long legs swooped (猛冲) down. It landed in a tree, on some sticks and branches. A nest!
Jacob looked at the other trees. There were nests all around! Another large bird swooped out from the trees, just as a new arrival flew in and landed.
“It is an airport,” said Jacob. “A bird airport!” “Those are great blue herons (鹭),” said Grandma. “See the baby chicks?” Jacob saw three little chicks stick their heads out of a nest. They stretched out their necks to receive food from their parent.
“They might be having fish for lunch,” said Grandma. After the meal, the heron spread its wings and flew into the air. It flew slightly downward at first, and then flew away with large and slow beats of its wings.
“Those are huge wings,” said Jacob.
“They help the heron travel a long way to find food,” said Grandma.
Jacob watched a heron fly in, with long legs stretched toward a nest and wings open wide, acting as brakes (刹车) for a gentle touchdown.
“They’re good for landing too,” said Jacob thoughtfully.

One possible version:
Back at home, Jacob asked Grandma for help to find paper plane designs on the computer. He recalled the shape of the heron’s wings and its posture during takeoff and landing. He had something special in mind. Together, Jacob and Grandma tried a new design. They folded the paper this way and that way, carefully lining up the edges and making them sharp. Then they made wide wings like a heron’s and bent them slightly upward. Soon they headed outside with two new planes set for takeoff.
“Ready?” Jacob held up his plane. “One. Two...,” he said and aimed carefully. “Three!” Jacob and his grandma threw their planes into the air. The planes soared, arched and landed gently on the grass. Jacob had a wide smile. “Look, Grandma, our plane is also flying like the big birds,” he said as he ran to the planes. “I want to fold a lot of these planes, so we will have our own secret airport!”
