"I was mad keen on cycling." he says. "I did whatever it took to get on that bike, as long as I was home before dark." Home meant housework, homework and annoying brothers. But a bike meant escapes.
In 2010, George transformed his childhood love into a livelihood, and opened his bicycle shop, Penuel Bicycles. The shop fulfilled a lifelong dream. Before that, he had worked for years delivering boxes for FedEx while selling bike accessories online.
"Bicycles kept me out of trouble," George remembers. "They were part of my life." He figured that was still true for kids when he opened Penuel Bicycles. George expected parents to crowd inside, eager to buy shiny new bikes for their kids. He looked forward to helping boys and girls discover the joy of ridingand stay out of troublejust as he had.
        None of that happened, however.
George found that kids these days lead a different life. Usually, they don't want a bike for their birthday. And most of them ever don't know how to ride a bike. Instead of getting out and riding, they prefer spending their time on their phones indoors. As kids don't ride, it is impossible that parents crowd in his shop to buy new bikes. Nine years after opening his Penuel Bicycles, George feared that he had to close the shop.
Then in 2020, the coronavirus pandemic swept the nation. Surprisingly, the pandemic saved George's business. During the pandemic, many American people found that cycling was a good way to exercise and also a safe way to get around. The demand for new bikes kept growing and people in George's neighborhood pulled out their old bikes and wheeled them to Penuel Bicycles to get repaired. Now he is trying his best to meet his customers' needs and hopes that his customers can really discover the joy of riding.4.  What did the bike mean to George in his childhood?A. Taking up sports.

    B. Passion for Exercise
    C. Improvement of Bike Business
    D. Increasing Demand for New BikesCBananas, apples and avocados are called climacteric fruits because they continue to become ripe after they are picked. Cherries, blackberries and grapes are called non-climacteric fruits because they do not. Knowing the difference between them is pivotal for fruit-growers and greengrocers because they can keep their goods in perfect condition when they arrive at the market places based on the knowledge. But how the difference originally came about remains unclear.Fukano Yuya and Tachiki Yuuya of the University of Tokyo offered a view. Fruits, which they observe, exist to solve a problem faced by all plants-how to best spread their young around. Wrapping their seeds in the sugary fruits, to provide a tasty meal, serves as a way to get animals to do this for them. They do, however, need to make sure that their fruits favour the animals most likely to do the distribution work. Their climacterism, or its absence, is a way to achieve this.To test their idea, the two researchers looked into 276 papers reporting on 80 sorts of fruits, and noted which animals each depended on for the distribution of their young 35 of these fruits they discovered, were eaten by both ground-dwelling animals and those living above the ground. But of others, 15 of the 19 eaten mainly by ground dwellers were climacteric, while 21 of the 26 fed on by animals living above the ground were non-climacteric.That is a suggestively strong connection. Other evidence points out that non-climacteric fruits tend to have vivid colors. This may help them stand out amid the leaves of their parent plants, advertising their presence. On the contrary, climacteric fruits are generally better at hiding themselves. That makes them harder to spot until they have fallen to the ground. The main limitation of their work, say Dr Fukano and Dr Tachiki, is that most of the papers they looked through concerned fruits eaten by people. This has probably affected, the sample, for thousands of years of selective breeding for characteristics that human beings find attractive may have weakened any signal improved by natural selection. The next step, therefore, should probably be to limit the analysis to wild fruits.8.  What does the underlined word "pivotal" in paragraph 1 probably mean?A. Critical B. Popular C. Reasonable D. Obvious.9.  How do plants spread seeds according to Fukano and Tachiki?A. By using their fruits to protect their seeds.
    B. By showing their sugary seeds to attract animals.
    C. By hiding their seeds on animals' favorite plants.
    D. By making their fruits beneficial to the potential spreaders.10.  Which can best describe the non-climacteric fruits?A. Protective and fully-grown.
    B. Small-sized and unnoticeable.
    C. Bright-colored and eye-catching.
    D. Hard and eaten by ground dwellers.11.  What do Dr Fukano and Dr Tachiki aim to do in the future?A. Find out fruits of old varieties.
    B. Turn to the study of wild fruits.
    C. Look into the selective breeding fruits.
    D. Protect different fruit plants for breeding.D    The best ideas are often so smart, so simple and so clearly needed; it's strange to discover they don't already exist. So it is with Farm My School, a program that's turning underused land at secondary schools into commercially achievable, regenerative market gardens farmed by and for local communities.
Co-founded by permaculturist Ben Shaw and regenerative educator James McLennan, Farm My School connects local people and organizations through volunteering that helps establish a school's market garden. Students learn about community networks, healthy eating, ecological responsibility, waste reduction, and climate relief while helping with food production. Schools integrate all these into their courses while producing vegetable boxes every week that feed local families, supply the school's food needs and ultimately pay the farmer's salary.
Farm My School has gained the extraordinary enthusiasm of the locals, who answered an online shout-out to buy tickets to the program's launch event at Bell Secondary School last October. Called Build a Farm in a Day Festival, the event featured workshops by Ben and James to share the skills required to build what they say is the world's largest no-dig garden. "It was such a powerful event, and I think that comes down to people wanting to act now," says James. "We charged for the experience and 600 guys turned up! They didn't even need free drinks to get excited. We were gardening till midnight. It was amazing. We've got true community buy-in."
Volunteers have since begun beneficial planting throughout the school. Next steps include further discussions with local communities, employing a farmer, and bringing in a teacher to develop courses. "We've seen this huge push towards seeing schools as regenerative spaces, not just for planting but for kids to be more connected to the outside world, and really seeing the school in a whole new light," James says. "For us, the big excitement is that by allowing a professional farmer to take the responsibility of growing food, it's not only on the school to look after that farm anymore, which eventually makes it much more sustainable," adds Ben.12.  Why was Farm My School founded?A. To raise the income of the local people.
    B. To advocate a commercial farming plan.
    C. To provide free food for local communities.
    D. To turn underused campus land into market gardens.13.  How do schools involve students into the program?A. By developing program-based courses.
    B. By organizing voluntary work in communities.
    C. By offering them part-time jobs in the market gardens.
    D. By encouraging them to produce daily vegetable boxes.14.  What does the underlined word "buy-in" mean in paragraph 3?A. Competition. B. Investment. C. Support. D. Protection.15.  What is the highlight of the program according to Ben?A. It brings in money to support the school.
    B. The school farm will be able to last long.
    C. The local people will take care of the farm.
    D. Students connect more with the outside world.第二节(5小题;每小题2.5,满分12.5)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。  What makes a work of architecture great? Most people would argue that aesthetics(美感) are the most important.     (16)     However, Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio believed that we should also consider durability and function when assessing a structure. The Rostonville Library in my city is a great example of Vitruvius's principles.
Constructed entirely of granitea hard and tough stone, the library is durable. It can withstand environmental pollution. For example, it is resistant to acid rain. Moreover, its granite structure is stable so it's more likely to survive an earthquake.     (17)    It uses solar energy for heating and a rooftop garden for cooling.
            (18)    Providing free access to print and digital information, it conveys a feeling of openness and accessibility. Furthermore, the entire library is on one level, and it has an open designthere are no inner walls or dividers. In addition, large windows let in plenty of natural light, so it's easy to see and get to each department within the library.
Finally, the library is beautiful, with aesthetically pleasing details both inside and out. The large windows are copper-framed(铜框的). The copper color provides an interesting contrast against the color of the granite structure and it will remain as the copper ages. Growth from the rooftop garden, which reaches down the sides of the building, adds to the aesthetics of the building.     (19)
Durability, functionality and beauty make the Rostonville Library a great structure. Architects who follow Vitruvius's principles help to make the city more pleasant to live in.      (20)
    A. The library is also sustainable.
    B. It is true that beauty is critical.
    C. This is not the only concern of the architects.
    D. The library was designed with functionality in mind.
    E. It softens the lines of the structure and helps it to fit into its natural surroundings.
    F. Plus, the library was built on the edge of the city park, surrounded by native plants.
    G. Buildings that fulfill these criteria offer both peace of mind and beauty for their users.第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节(15小题;每小题1,满分15)阅读下面短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。Each year, eight children in an average class in the UK are unable to read well when they leave primary school. Her elder sister Serena was now dancing at a top college. Though Kelly's mom always wanted her to follow in her sister's footsteps and Kelly herself was good at ballet, her love for ballet had faded years before, and she was eager for a new challenge. One day at school, as Kelly left the dance studio, she walked past the gym, fascinated by boxers(拳击手) training inside the boxing ring. She was deeply impressed by how hard they hit and how fast they moved. In fact, she'd long been attracted to boxing. She pulled a piece of paper from her backpack. On the familiar Oakwood High School Club Sign-up Sheet was the phrase: BOXING CLUB TRYOUT(选拔).That was what Kelly really wanted to do. She knew her mom had high expectations for her when it came to ballet. Tired of trying to keep up with her sister, Kelly was ready to carve her own path. The next day, she gathered her courage and told Serena about her new passion. At first, Serena didn't understand and thought she was just joking. But when she saw Kelly was serious, she replied, "You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right? Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you're so good at ballet. Lean into your strength, Kelly.""But this is where I want to put my strength," Kelly insisted, "and what exactly does 'only for boys' mean, anyway? Boxing is a sport for everyone!"Gradually, touched by her determination and passion, Serena began to understand and support her. Kelly could feel it. Her sister was going to respect her decision, no matter what. But that was nothing compared to the preparations for the tryout, where she was required to show her footwork and punching(击打) abilities with other candidates. Boxing didn't come natural to Kelly, but she had made up her mind to stick with her choice.注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Then Kelly began her training for the tryout, keeping it a secret from her mom.
The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout were posted.
