The British are well known for the amount of tea that they drink. Each person in the UK drinks around 1. 9 kg of tea every year. That’s around 876 cups of tea. Tea is drunk by the whole society. But tea doesn’t grow in Britain. Most of the tea is grown in India and China. So how did it become an important part of British culture?
Tea arrived in London in the 1600s. At this time British ships were exploring (探索) the world and found the drink by accident in China. It was not long before green tea was available to buy. However, this was only available to the rich.
At the beginning of the 1700s, the amount of tea arriving in Britain increased gradually. Black tea arrived at this time. At first, people drank this tea exactly as it was in China. They soon discovered that it tasted good with a little milk and sugar, giving the drink a special British characteristic which can be seen as one of the symbols of Britain.
In the 1800s, tea was still a product enjoyed only by people with money. At this time they began to have “afternoon tea”. This means drinking tea with snacks around 4 pm to avoid feeling hungry between lunch and dinner. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less popular in recent times.
In the late 1800s, the price of the tea dropped fast as more tea began to arrive on ships from India and China. It was no longer a drink just for rich people. Tearooms— shops where you could buy and drink tea—started to appear across the country. People enjoyed drinking tea and socializing (社交) in these places. At the start of the 20th century, the British began to make tea in their homes whenever they felt like it. Teapots became a must in every kitchen.
39. Where is most of the tea planted besides China in the world?
A. In India. B. In America. C. In Britain.
40. What can you learn from the passage?
A. Anyone in London could get green tea in the 1600s.
B. Black tea appeared in Britain at the start of the 1700s.
C. The tradition of having afternoon tea began in the 1900s.
41. What does the underlined word “characteristic” mean in Chinese?
A.气质 B.特色 C.遗产
42. Why did tearooms become popular in the late 1800s?
A. Because people didn’t like to drink tea at home.
B. Because people didn’t have teapots in their homes.
C. Because people could buy tea at a lower price than before.
43. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Tea in Britain
B. The history of tea
C. Tea’s influence on the world

Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: 44 Here, we look at two examples.
A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. 45 The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
46 Think about violinists in an orchestra (管弦乐团). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
Gotfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses or other information normally. However, they can still sing. 47 Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the damaged (损坏的) part. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again.
Music improves concentration (注意力), memory, listening skills and our language abilities. 48 Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp (敏锐的) as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable, it’s also good for us in many other ways.
A. It can even help sick people get better.
B. Music improves certain language abilities in the brain.
C. The violinists develop their memories by playing the violin.
D. He was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak.
E. Musicians hear better because they learned to pay attention to certain sounds.
F. In his study two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room.

You’re going to a senior high school, aren’t you? But maybe your friendship can’t continue because you and your friends are in different schools. If you are not sure whether your friendship can last, there are many things you can do to keep it strong.
Trust is very important in keeping any relationship strong. If you trust the person whom you have a good relationship with completely and the other person also trusts you in the same way, then you two have a good relationship.
You can remember important dates of your friends such as their birthdays and wish them or give gifts to them on the special days. Many people say they don’t have enough money for the gifts, but remember friendship is not about money. You can choose something small and inexpensive for their gifts or send online cards.
Sometimes distance (距离) makes relationships even closer. So, when you are far from your friends, there are many ways you can keep in touch. You can use emails, WeChat or QQ, and you can also write a blog and share your daily life activities with your friends.
If there is anything that makes you happy, share it with your friends. Listen to their thoughts as well. If they have a great achievement, send them your congratulation as soon as possible.
I have seen good friendships and then there is unhealthy competition between two friends. Though this may not happen in many cases, it is better to keep this idea in mind since it may happen to you.
When you go to senior high school, maybe it’s the time to say goodbye to some friends who don’t go to the 49 school as you. Here is some advice for you to keep your relationship strong. First, trust each other 50 , and then you can have a good relationship. Second, give gifts on special days. If you can’t afford expensive things, a small and cheap gift is a good 51 . Third, when you are far from your friends, you can keep in touch with each other 52 using emails, WeChat, QQ and so on. Fourth, share happy things with friends. There was once a famous scientist called Robert who made several important discoveries. Once he
was asked how he could be so creative. He replied that it all came from an experience he had with his mother when he was 2 years old. He was trying to take a bottle of milk out of the fridge. But the bottle was too smooth and he dropped it. The kitchen floor was covered with milk.
Instead of shouting at him or punishing him, his mother said, “Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! I have never seen such a huge puddle of milk. Would you like to play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”
So he did. After a few minutes, they cleaned it up together. Then his mother said, “This was a failed test in how to carry a bottle of milk with two tiny hands. Let’s fill the bottle with water and see if you can find a way to carry it without dropping it.”
The little boy learned that if he held the bottle at the neck with both hands. he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!
The scientist then added that it was at that moment that he knew he didn’t need to be afraid to make mistakes. He learned that mistakes are just chances to learn something new.
四、听力填空 本题你将听到一篇短文。请你根据所听内容,完成下面的表格,并将获取的信息填到答题卡相应的位置上。每空一词。读两遍。
Although the ability to talk with others comes naturally to some, it is a skill that most of us must develop. With a little effort, even shy people can learn to talk with others comfortably.
Speak less and listen more. People love to speak about themselves. In social situations, be sure to ask others about their interests, work and so on. And this way you’ll be regarded as a great talker, though you’ve said little or nothing.
Develop your sense of humor. Take notes of the things that make you laugh and pay attention to what others find humorous. You don’t have to be a great storyteller in order to make others laugh. Or your listeners will think you don’t take yourself too seriously.
Know about present events. Even with limited time, you can have knowledge of what has happened in the world recently. Pay for a weekly news magazine or at least read the headings of a daily paper. You can even catch the news online these days.
Keep your own opinions short. If you talk too much about your own ideas or achievements, listeners will get bored in three minutes. Being short goes a long way in social situations.
In short, being a good listener is half done. Sharing fresh information with a sense of humor is the other.
