    When Aunt Em came there t live she was a yung, pretty wife. The sun and wind had changed her, t. They had taken the sparkle frm her eyes and left them a sber gray; they had taken the red frm her cheeks and lips, and they were gray als. She was thin and gaunt, and never smiled nw. When
    Drthy, wh was an rphan, first came t her, Aunt Em had been s startled by the child’s laughter that she wuld scream and press her hand upn her heart whenever Drthy’s merry vice reached her ears; and she still lked at the little girl with wnder that she culd find anything t laugh at.
       Uncle Henry never laughed. He wrked hard frm mrning till night and did nt knw what jy was. He was gray als, frm his lng beard t his rugh bts, and he lked stern and slemn, and rarely spke.
    It was Tt that made Drthy laugh, and saved her frm grwing as gray as her ther surrundings. Tt was nt gray; he was a little black dg, with lng silky hair and small black eyes that twinkled merrily n either side f his funny, wee nse. Tt played all day lng, and Drthy played with him, and lved him dearly.
    Tday, hwever, they were nt playing. Uncle Henry sat upn the drstep and lked anxiusly at the sky, which was even grayer than usual. Drthy std at the dr with Tt in her arms, and lked at the sky t. Aunt Em was washing the dishes.
    Frm the far nrth they heard a lw wail f the wind, and Uncle Henry and Drthy culd see where the lng grass bwed in waves befre the cming strm. There nw came a sharp whistling in the air frm the suth, and as they turned their eyes that way they saw ripples in the grass cming frm that directin als.
    Suddenly Uncle Henry std up. “There’s a cyclne cming, Em, ” he called t his wife. “I’ll g lk after the stck. ” Then he ran tward the sheds where the cws and hrses were kept. Aunt Em drpped her wrk and came t the dr. One glance tld her f the danger clse at hand.
    “Quick, Drthy! ” she screamed. “Run fr the cellar! ” Tt jumped ut f Drthy’s arms and hid under the bed, and the girl started t get him. Aunt Em, badly frightened, threw pen the trap dr in the flr and climbed dwn the ladder int the small, dark hle.
    Drthy caught Tt at last and started t fllw her aunt. When she was halfway acrss the rm there came a great shriek frm the wind, and the huse shk s hard that she lst her fting and sat dwn suddenly upn the flr.
