Notice the intonation when reading aloud the following paragraphs.Paragraph 1One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair mixed in with her dark brown hair. She looked at her mother and asked, "Why are some of your hairs white, Mom?" Her mother replied, "Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white." The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, "Mom, how come all of. Grandma’s hairs are white?” Paragraph 2My biological mother was young. Before I was born, she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted by a lawyer. But he decided that he really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother refused to sign the final adoption papers only when my parents promised that I would someday go to college… Paragraph 3I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents' garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I .had. just..turned 30_.As Apple grew we hired someone who. I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went very well. Paragraph 4I was born on my grandfathers birthday, a couple of weeks early, weighing  at a respectable six pounds eight ounces, on a twenty-one-inch frame. Mother and I came home to her parents' house on Hervey Street in Hope, where I would spend the next four years. That old house seemed massive and mysterious to me then and still holds deep memories today. The people of Hope raised the funds to restore it and fill it with old pictures and period furniture. They call it the Clinton Birthplace. It certainly is the place I associate with awakening to life., Paragraph 5 We are told that we should drink at least two litres of water a day, and more if we are exercising, but what many people do not realize is that too much water can be fatal. The result is low salt. When we sweat, we lose vital salts. Our body needs salts to maintain a balance. Too much sweating and drinking makes "low salt" condition in the body to a dangerous level. The results can be dizziness and mental confusion. Some sufferers can even; drop into a coma and die. Paragraph 6The island of Lundy, set in the. Atlantic Ocean about fifteen miles off the west coast of Devon, is three miles long and- rises, over four hundred feet out of the sea. It has tremendous views towards England, Wales and across the Atlantic. It has tall cliffs towards the south and west, and small wooded valleys on the east coast facing the mainland. There are three lighthouses, a castle, a church, a farm, several houses and cottages, a population of about fifteen, and no cars. Most of the buildings are made of the island’s. beautiful coloured stone. Paragraph 7The role of a grandmother has never been really defined. Some sit in rockers, some sky dive, some have careers. Others clean ovens. Some have white hair. Others wear wigs. Some see their grandchildren once a day (and it's not enough). Others, once a year (and that's too much).Once I conducted an interesting survey among a group of eight-year-olds on grandmas. I asked them three questions. One, what is a grandmother? Two, what does she do? And three, what is the difference between a grandmother and a mother? Paragraph 8Life surrounds us with teachers, if we are but willing to learn. Actually, everyone and everything in our life is our teacher — they teach by example of something we’d like to attain or something we'd like to abandon. One of my greatest teachers these days is my dog, Angel. What a teacher! He has reminded me of the importance of taking time — for myself, to play, to laugh, to go out into nature and enjoy the moment. He has reminded me of the importance of being loyal to friends, curious and interested in strangers, and always willing to explore new territories and adventures. Paragraph 9  More than 80 percent of the presentations given by business school students -rely on PowerPoint rather than the old-fashioned flowing narrative. "But what’s fine for a business professional might not be so fine for a child," says Sherry Turkle, a professor at MIT, "They change how our kids grow up and how they process information. PowerPoint doesn't teach children to make an argument. It encourages presentation, not conversation. Students grow accustomed to not being challenged. A strong presentation is designed to close down debate, rather than open it up." Paragraph 10When he became Secretary-General, the UN was in trouble financially, and was losing its influence in the world. Annan reformed the organization, made necessary budget and staff cuts, and brought new life to the UN. Under his leadership, the UN dealt with several delicate political situations, working to raise the status of women and improve relations between business, labour and civil groups. The Secretary-General wants all of the world’s people to share the benefits of globalization, and is committed to "ending poverty and inequality, improving education, reducing HIV/AIDS, safeguarding the environment and protecting people .
