1. Stonehenge, a rock circle, is not only one of Britain’s most famous historical places, but also one of its greatest mysteries.

巨石阵，一个岩石圈，不仅是英国最著名的名胜古迹之一，而且还是最大的谜团之一。

not only …but also…“不但、、、而且、、、”主要连接两个对等的成分；连接两个成分做主语，其后谓语动词与靠近的主语保持一致，即“就近原则”。

【背景知识】

巨石阵(stonehenge)由巨大的石头组成，每块约重50吨。它的主轴线、通往石柱的古道和夏至日早晨初升的太阳，在同一条线上;另外，其中还有两块石头的连线指向冬至日落的方向。约建于公元前4000~2000年，是欧洲著名的史前时代文化神庙遗址，位于英格兰威尔特郡索尔兹伯里平原。2008年3月至4月，英国考古学家研究发现，巨石阵的准确建造年代距今已经有4300年，即建于公元前2300年左右。
