    Teaching aims:

    1. Learn Qian Xuesen and Stephen Hawkings life, achievements and their scientific spirit.
    2. Figure out the structure and language features of the text.
    3. Identify what makes a great scientist.
    4. Write an essay about the scientific spirit.

    Teaching key and difficult points:

    1.    Analyse the two great scientists qualities and language features of the text.
    2.    Lead students to write an essay about the scientific spirit.

        Teaching procedures:

    StepⅠPre-reading

    T: We have learned some stories some great scientists, such as Tu Youyou, Yuan Longping and Einstein. Today well learn about two other great scientists. Look at the pictures. What do you know about them?

    Suggested answers:

    Qian Xuesen,a Chinese scientist,the father of Chinas aerospaceandthe father of Chinas rocketry,made important contributions to the space and missile programme of China.

    Stephen Hawking,a British scientist,put forward a theory about black holes.He has shown that black holes do not only absorb everything around them but,from time to time,throw out matter as well.

    StepⅡWhile-reading

    Activity 1 Read for predictions.

    Look at the titles and pictures and predict the following questions.

    1.What will the two texts tell about the two great scientists?

    2.In what order will the texts be written?

    Suggested answers:

    1.The texts will mainly talk about the two scientists admiration,study,family backgrounds,life deeds or achievements.

    2.In time order.

    Activity 2 Read for detailed information.

    1.Read the texts quickly and decide if the statements are true (T) or false (F).

    (1)Qian changed his major because of a shift in personal interest.

    (2)Qians strong interest in art has a positive impact on a scientists development.

    (3)When Hawking was young,almost everyone believed that the universe began with a big bang.

    (4)Because Hawking was determined,he was able to succeed even though he was ill.

    2.Work in groups.Answer the questions below using the information from the texts.

    (1)Why was Qian calledthe father of Chinas aerospace?

    (2)What important personalities and qualities Qian Xuesen had helped him earn the name ofthe father of Chinas aerospace? Find the words that describe the personalities of the scientist.

    (3)How was Hawkings own theory proven correct?

    (4)What personalities and qualities in Stephen Hawking helped him with his work and made him one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th and 21st centuries?Find the words that describe the personalities of the scientist.

    (5)How do the stories about the scientists help illustrate these personalities?

    Suggested answers:

    (1)Because much of the technology behind the Shenzhou rockets was based on his research.

    (2)Qian Xuesen:patriotic,knowledgeable,and determined.

    (3)Astronomers used their telescopes to prove his work on the big bang theory.

    (5)By giving examples from the lives of the scientists and their achievements.

    Activity 3 Read for the structure and language features.

    1.How does the writer develop the first text?

    2.List the linking words and phrases in the passages,and describe their functions.

    3.What is the function of each paragraph in the passages?

    Suggested answers:

    1.In time order.

    2.However, after, at that time, nevertheless, because, in general, besides, furthermore, and above all.

    These serve to link elements of the passages and bring greater cohesion and logical flow.

    StepⅢ Post-reading(Write an essay about the scientific spirit.)

    Activity 1 Discuss the following questions.

    1.Besides Qian Xuesen and Stephen Hawking,what other great scientists can you think of?

    2.Besides the personal qualities Qian and Hawking showed,what other important qualities should a great scientist have?

    3.What is the significance of the scientific spirit and what inspiration can you get from these scientists?

    Suggested answers:

    1.Zhong Nanshan,Yuan Longping and Einstein.

    2.Other important qualities:determination,talent,responsibility,self-sacrifice,curiosity,patience,courage,bravery,persistence,brilliance,devotion,selflessness,carefulness,creativity,energy,co-operation,dependence and faith.

    3.The definition of the scientific spirit is to be willing and able to grasp a problem or a question and not let go of it until knowledge,creative power,and collaboration have brought a clear answer.Then this same mind must believe in its findings to bravely present,prove,and perfect them for the betterment of the quality and sustainability of life all over the world.It is to look squarely,ask questions,and never give up trying.

    Activity 2 Draw a mind map of the structure of your essay.

    What similarities and differences in the language and structure of the two articles in the textbook?And what will be the structure of the essay?

    Suggested answers:

    Similarities and differences:The focus of the two texts is to introduce scientists.Readers can better understand them through the scientific spirit embodied in them,while the focus of the writing part is to talk about the scientific spirit,but it needs to be explained by the deeds of scientists.

    Mind map:

    Activity 3 Write the essay independently.

    Activity 4 Exchange the draft with your partner.Evaluate and revise the draft according to the checklist.

    What standards do you think this essay should meet?

    Does the writer explain clearly the personal qualities that make up the scientific spirit?

    Does the writer give examples from the life of the scientist to illustrate the points?

    Does the writer describe the personality of a great scientist?

    Does the writer use appropriate linking words and phrases to tie the ideas together?

    Does the writer use separate paragraphs,each with its own function?

    Activity 5 Present and share the essay actively and bravely.
