    Teaching aims

    1.Enable students to master the usage of the present perfect continuous tense.

    2.Guide students to distinguish the present perfect continuous tense from the present perfect tense.

    3.Help students to use the present perfect continuous tense to express your own ideas in the real situations.

    Teaching key points:

    1.    Help students identify the usage of the present perfect continuous tense.
    2.    Instruct students to tell the present perfect continuous tense from the present perfect tense.
    3.    Lead students to use the present perfect continuous tense in the context.

    Teaching difficult points:

    1.    How to use the present perfect continuous tense in the real situations.
    2.    Distinguish the present perfect continuous tense from the present perfect tense.

    Teaching procedures:

    Step Lead-in

    Look at the sentence in the present perfect continuous tense.Find more examples from the text and pay attention to the predicate verbs.

    Example:This is the adventure that I have been dreaming of.

    Suggested answers:

    1.We have been managing to survive.

    2.We have been struggling for days.

    Step Observe and analyse

    Activity 1 Observe and summarise the function of the present perfect continuous tense.

    1.We have been waiting for you for half an hour.

    我们等了你半个小时。

    2.I have been learning English since three years ago.

    自从三年前以来我一直在学英语。

    3.I have been visiting some cities of China this month.

    这个月我一直在参观中国的一些城市。

    4.Her eyes are red.Its obvious that she has been crying for a long time.

    她的眼睛红红的,显然哭了很长时间。

    5.She has always been working hard.

    她工作一直很努力。

    6.Too much has been happening today.

    今天真是多事的一天啊。

    Activity 2 Observe and identify the differences between the present perfect continuous tense and the present perfect tense.

    1.He has been writing a novel,which will be finished next month.

    2.He has written a novel,which is being prepared to come out now.

    3.I have been visiting my hometown recently,and it impresses me differently each time.

    4.I have visited my hometown recently,whose changes have left a deep impression on me.

    5.Recently she has always been helping me.

    6.Recently she has helped me a lot.

    Activity 3 Observe and pay special attention to some verbs.

    1.I have known him for years.

    我已经认识他好几年了。

    2.They have finished the work.

    他们已经完成了这份工作。

    3.There has existed an old temple since the Ming Dynasty.

    Step  Practices and promotions

    Activity 1 Read each situation and rewrite each sentence using the present perfect continuous tense.

    1.The dog started to bark about two hours ago.I really hope it will stop soon.

    2.Steve started to play rugby at the age of eight.Now he has become a professional player.

    3.Timmy is holding a table tennis bat and his short hair is damp with sweat.He looks a little tired after playing table tennis for two hours.

    4.Diane hasnt got much sleep this week.She looks terrible today.

    5.I tried to phone you this morning.I must have tried a dozen times before I caught you here.

    Suggested answers:

    1.The dog has been barking for about two hours.I really hope it will stop soon.

    2.Steve has been playing rugby since the age of eight.Now he has become a professional player.

    3.Timmy is holding a table tennis bat and his short hair is damp with sweat.He looks a little tired because he has been playing table tennis for two hours.

    4.Diane hasnt been sleeping well this week.She looks terrible today.

    5.I have been trying to phone you this morning.I must have tried a dozen times before I caught you here.

    Activity 2 Complete the sentences below using the correct tenses of the verbs in bracket.Then explain your reasons to your partner.

    1.For the whole morning,the board of directors      (discuss) the resolution to increase wages in the coming year. 

    2.Jasons only recreation is painting.He      (learn) how to paint for over five years. 

    3.Even though we lost the game,we should be proud of ourselves because we      (try) our best and      (work) as a team. 

    4.He finally      (finish) the research paper under his tutors guidance.

    Step  Language Use and Share

    Work in pairs.Interview your partner about the things that he/she has been doing.The following questions might help.

    3.What have you been doing recently?

    Suggested answers:

    A:Do you have any hobbies?

    B:Sure.I have several hobbies such as playing table tennis,photograph and kite flying.But my favourite hobby is playing the guitar.

    A:How long have you been learning the guitar?

    B:I have been learning the guitar since I was eight years old.I saw a video of someone playing and I fell in love with it.

    A:Thats great.

     Step Consolidation
