Though seven years have passed, I still clearly remember the moment I was going to join the Red Cross.
It was the summer before I entered high school. I was volunteering at a blood drive. As I helped people at the canteen, I fell into a conversation with some of the donors (献血者). Some told me it was their first time; some said it was their fiftieth time. One elderly man talked about how his own near-death experience had encouraged him to start donating blood.
I left that blood drive with my mind swimming with stories. I had never before had such a meaningful volunteering experience. It was then that I seriously considered joining the Red Cross. I signed up with the Red Cross club at my school. Whether it was teaching CPR (心肺复苏) or organizing a Leadership Development Camp, every volunteering activity was meaningful.
In September 2017, my home, the Columbia River Gorge, was destroyed by forest fires. The air was heavy with smoke. Many families had to leave their homes. The Red Cross stepped up to offer their help. And within a few days, our school Red Cross club held its first meeting of the school year. During the meeting, we discussed different plans of action. Over the course of three weeks, we were able to raise thousands of dollars.
The Red Cross has enriched my life in countless ways. I am now excited to continue my journey as a lifetime Red Cross volunteer. I am ready to prevent suffering wherever I am needed.

If you are interested in polar exploration, you must have heard of Roald Amundsen, the first explorer to reach the South Pole.
Born on July 16, 1872 in Norway, Roald grew up with his other three older brothers. His father, a businessman in the shipping industry, died when he was just 14. The teen had dreamed of becoming an explorer, but his mother wanted him to become a doctor. He followed his mother’s wish until she died when he was 21. Then Roald left school to go after his dream of exploring.
His adventure on a Belgian research ship in 1896 was his first real polar exploration. When the ship got stuck in ice, the people on board were forced to spend winter in terrible conditions. But Roald used his skills to find fresh food, and showed himself to be a capable explorer. This was perhaps one of the most important experiences that would lead to him becoming an Arctic (北极的) explorer.
Roald had planned to be the first man to reach and explore the North pole. However, hearing that Robert Peary had already reached there, Roald changed the plan and decided to go to the South Pole. In January, 1911, Roald’s ship arrived at the Bay of Whales in Antarctica. His team set up camp there and prepared for the trip to the South Pole. The team set out to reach the South pole months later. At first, they travelled quickly, but soon they had to pass over mountains and avoid dangerous places. On June 5, 2022, Shenzhou XIV was launched into space with the astronauts Chen Dong. Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe. Four months later, on Oct 12, the three astronauts gave a space class. They showed the students on Earth around the lab. They also did some fun experiments. For instance, Liu Yang uses a 2-meter-long straw to drink mango juice easily.
On 31st of the same month, China’s Mengtian lab module (舱) was sent into space from Wenchang, Hainan. About 13 hours later, it docked with the Tianhe key module and connected successfully. The success of this task marks the start of the final stage of the building of Tiangong, China’s own space station.
Mengtian means “Dreaming of the Heavens.” It’s Tiangong’s second lab module and last main part. Its arrival allows the space station to form a T-shaped structure. The lab module is 17.88 meters long and weighs about 23 tonnes. It is similar to Tianhe and Wentian in size and weight. But unlike those two modules, Mengtian was mainly designed to do scientific research and experiments. It’s full of cabinets (陈列柜) to support hundreds of experiments in space.
After that, China’s space program will enter its next stage. And China is trying to build Tiangong into an international stage. “I’m proud that China is opening its space station to the world,” said Guo Yukun, one of big fans of space. “This is good news for all of mankind.”

I used to do my homework till midnight and have no time for my hobbies. At the same time, I always attended many training courses at weekends. So I had less time for exercise and felt very tired all the time. But now, I have more time to develop my hobbies. What’s more, I often help my parents do the housework. Even I do some volunteer work, such as cleaning the park and visiting the old. Free-time activities are beneficial to me. I can not only relax, but also learn some knowledge that can’t be learnt in class. In my opinion, we should spare some time to do free-time activities in order to grow up healthily.
