Eliana Yi dreamed of pursuing piano performance in college, never minding that her fingers could barely reach the length of an octave Unable to fully play many works by Romanticera composers including Beethoven and Brahms, she tried anyway — and in her determination to spend hours practicing a Chopin concerto, wound up injuring herself.
The efforts of Professor Carol Leone from the Southern Methodist University (SMU) have changed all that: Twenty years ago, the school became the first major university in the US to introduce smaller keyboards into its music program, leveling the playing field for Yi and other piano majors.
Yi, 21 years old, tried one of the smaller Keyboards, “I remember being really excited, because my hands could actually reach and play all the right notes,” she said.
For decades, few questioned the size of the traditional piano. For those with small hand spans (掌距), it's difficult to properly play many works of Beethoven and Brahms. Those who attempt to play them either get used to skipping notes or risk injury with repeated play. Leone is familiar with such challenges. Born into a family of musicians, she favored classical music and pursued piano despite her small hand spans and earned a doctor in musical arts.
The idea of smaller keyboards first met resistance from some traditionalists. Leone also said that when she raised the issue with one Viennese professor, he told her there were already too many pianists anyway.
Though such resistance is fading, there are some very traditional people who think of piano as a competitive thing. Leone said, “This is art. It's not sport. It's about making as much beautiful art as possible, and we should give everybody the opportunity to do that.”
4.Why did Eliana Yi find it hard to play a Chopin concerto well?

5.What is Paragraph 4 intended to do?
A.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
B.Provide some advice for pianists.
C.Introduce a new topic for discussion.
D.Add some background information.

If you were to throw, say, a banana peel out of your car while driving along the motorway, that would be a completely harmless action, due to the fact that it's part of a fruit — right? Actually, no. A banana peel can take up to two years to be naturally processed, and with a third of motorists admitting to littering while driving, that's a whole lot of discarded banana peels. An orange peel and a cigarette butt have a similar biodegrading (生物降解) term to that of a banana peel, but tin cans last up to 100 years; and plastic bottles last forever, so do glass bottles.
Despite the fact that longerlasting materials will serve to damage the environment and its animals for longer, we can't merely measure the severity of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short length of biodegrading time, more than 120 tons of cigaretterelated litter is discarded in the UK every day.
It's not a cheap habit either: to keep our streets clean annually costs UK taxpayers £500 million, and when you include our green spaces, that goes up to £1 billion. So, it's not surprising that if caught flytipping you could face a £20,000 fine or even jail time and, if you dispose of something dangerous, the court could give you five years to serve. Regardless of how severe these punishments might seem, however, among the reported cases only 2,000 were found guilty out of 825,000, so we still have some way to go in making sure people obey the rules.
8.What does the underlined word“discarded”in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Harmless. B.Processed.
C.Thrown. D.Longlasting.
9.Which of the following has the longest biodegrading term?
A.Glass bottles. B.Tin cans.
C.Cigarette butts. D.Banana peels.
10.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The severity of rubbish can be measured only by its lifetime.
B.Quite a few people were found guilty of illegally littering.
C.Every year UK taxpayers spend £500 million keeping streets free of dirt.
D.Cigaretterelated litter and peels can be ignored for their fairly short lifetime.
根据最后一段中的“to keep our streets clean annually costs UK taxpayers £500 million”可知,每年英国纳税人需花费5亿英镑来保持街道干净。
11.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To inform readers of different biodegrading terms.
B.To call for people not to litter illegally.
C.To encourage people to use fewer plastic bags.
D.To stress the importance of good behavior.
D
In the struggle to survive the ever hotter deserts of California, there are winners and losers. Among the losers are desert birds, whose populations have fallen among the heat stress of climate change. The winners, it turns out, are small burrowing mammals (穴居哺乳动物), which take refuge from the sun underground. Researchers noted that the stable mammals populations formed a striking contrast to the extremely bad condition of birds.
But why? Birds had a higher evaporative (蒸发) heat loss. Birds were more exposed to the effects of warming, so they had higher energy costs to maintain their body temperature. However, mammals were able to reduce their body temperature by using burrows during the day.
Temperatures have risen about 4 degrees Fahrenheit on average across the area studied, but the heat affects birds and small mammals differently. As part of the study, scientists modeled each species' body temperature and cooling needs under different desert conditions. To calculate that, they measured the conductivity (传导率) of the animals' fur or feathers, and used information on their heat reducing behaviors.
The models showed that in the fight against climate change, there was not a level playing field for furred and feathered desert animals. Cooling costs — or the resources needed to maintain stable body temperature — were about 3.3 times higher for birds than they were for small mammals, the study reported.
Small mammals have shown this remarkable stability. It's really quite interesting that, in the same region, with the same level of climate change, these two species have responded very differently to the changes taking place. Insights into the status of different species can help scientists take steps to protect them, such as increasing fire prevention in high desert areas, and enhancing water sources in those areas. The study also demonstrates that climate change is already reshaping the California desert.
12.Why can desert burrowing mammals survive better than desert birds?
A.Burrowing mammals prefer to live in deserts.
B.Burrowing mammals eat less during the day.
C.Burrowing mammals' caves are natural shelters.
D.Burrowing mammals live in the same community.
13.What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A.Birds and small mammals respond differently to climate changes.
B.Birds in the desert were defeated by climate changes.
C.Animals living underground have higher cooling costs.
D.Temperature rise affects the burrowing mammals little.
根据第三段第一句中的“but the heat affects birds and small mammals differently”可知,鸟类和小型穴居动物对气温上升的反应不同。
14.What is the possible meaning of the new finding?
A.Burrowing mammals may help birds during the day.
B.Governments will improve water quality.
C.Man will reshape the deserts to save themselves.
D.Scientists can save species with scientific means.
15.What do we know from the text?
A.It's time to change the deserts into green fields.
B.Desert birds are more likely to survive in deserts.
C.Burrowing mammals' habitat needs improving greatly.
D.Burrowing mammals survive climate change underground.

How to Break Bad Habits
Habits are ways of dealing with issues in your environment. You often do not think about them. James Clear, in his book AtomicHabits, describes a fourstep process by which habits are made. These steps are cue (提示), craving (渴望), response, and reward.
A cue is a signal. __16__. A craving is a desire for something. The response, or reaction, is the habit that you perform. The response gives you a reward.
__17__. Perhaps you are learning new words or expressions. But then you feel the need to check your phone. You return to your studies, only to look again at your phone a short time later. This process, when repeated many times, could reduce your ability to learn new material. __18__ — a custom or repeated action that has a negative effect on you or your goals.
James Clear notes that to break bad habits, you need to think about each step in the habitmaking process. In the cell phone example, the cue is seeing the cell phone. The craving is the desire or urge to check your phone. __19__. The reward might be seeing something interesting on social media. To break a habit, he writes, you should think about making the bad habit invisible, unattractive, difficult and unsatisfying by hiding it away, stopping checking, increasing the space between you and your phone, making a habit contract (合同) and so on.
The important thing to remember is that people can change their habits. Habit changes take time. __20__.
A.Imagine you are studying English
B.It is what you might call a bad habit
C.The response is checking your phone

A visit to City Museum
Last Saturday, the members of our school's English Club went to the City Museum to appreciate a large Chinese painting exhibition.
A large number of Chinese paintings are on show, all of which are the works of famous Chinese painters. Besides, we watched a video about the achievements in painting of the last few centuries. All of us were amazed at our colorful culture, saying that this visit was really a cultural feast.
In my view, the visit not only enriched our life, but also helped us learn more about Chinese painting culture.
Two things changed my life: my mother and a bike basket. It's true. I would be a different person if my mom hadn't turned a bike basket into a life lesson I carry with me today — a lesson about the value of efforts.
My mother and father were united in their way of raising children, but it mostly fell to my mother to actually carry it out. Looking back, I honestly don't know how she did it. Managing the family budget must have been a very hard task, but she made it look effortless. If we complained about not having what other kids owned, we'd hear something like, “I don't care what soandso got for his birthday. You are not getting a TV in your room or a big party.” We had to earn our allowance (零用钱) by doing chores (家庭杂务) around the house. I can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost, it was not replaced.
It was one summer day. My mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed — and there it was in the window — white, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers. The basket winked at me and I knew I had to have it. “It's beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her. “What a neat basket.”
I tried to hold off at first, but then I couldn't stand it any longer. “Mom, please can I get it? I'll do anything, please, Mom, please?” I was desperate.
“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was the coolest thing ever, “if you save up, you could buy this yourself.”
“By the time I have earned enough, it'll have gone! Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please?”
“There might be another way,” she said.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
“I'llbuyitnowbutyouonlygetitafter 3 weeksofdoublechores,”Momexplained.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, Igotmydreambasket, butsoonIsadlyfoundthesamebasketonothers' bikes!
Paragraph 1:
“I'llbuyitnowbutyouonlygetitafter 3 weeksofdoublechores,”Momexplained. I agreed immediately and Mom bought the flowery basket and kept it somewhere I couldn't find. Each day, I finished my new routine of double household chores with passion and enthusiasm. Each night, I crossed off another day on the calendar as I counted down to the day.As the days passed, the basket seemed to become even more beautiful in my imagination. The extra chores didn't bother me. The basket was worth it. The anticipation grew stronger as the days ticked away.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, Igotmydreambasket, butsoonIsadlyfoundthesamebasketonothers' bikes! So shocked and upset was I that I immediately went home to report this disaster to my mom. Seeing my sulky face, she gently wiped away my tears. Holding my little face in her warm hands, she spoke out what has become the lesson I still carry with me today. “Your basket is not the same basket. It's unique because it was not obtained by mere money but by your worthwhile effort and waiting.”
