My kid's new school is a construction area now. Even though the new building is very exciting, in the meantime there is no real playground for all the kids to use. They just run around the front of the school during the lunch break.
This gets me thinking about starting a book club for the upper elementary kids to meet in during lunch. This idea has the added benefit of giving my very shy daughter a chance to make some connections with other kids who like books as much as she does.
This is how I'm starting our book club. After getting permission from the principal and finding a space in the school to hold our meetings, I'll send out a flier (传单) in our Friday school notes with my contact information. At our first meeting we'll think of a name for our book club and decide together on the first two books we will read.
I absolutely love the idea of a motherdaughter book club. The reason is that my friend, mother of a teenage daughter, told me she always tried to befriend all the mothers of her daughter's friends. As a group they're better able to know what the girls are doing.
Now that my daughter is in the fourth grade and we're at a new school, I'm feeling especially drawn to start forming relationships with the mothers of her friends. A book club seems like a good way to do that with the added benefit of getting to open up communication between daughters and mothers, because in a few years a lot of our daughters won't really want to talk to us.

People_seldom_feel_neutral_about_poetry. Those who love it sometimes give the impression that it is an adequate substitute for food, shelter, and love.It isn't.Words, no matter how satisfying, are never an equivalent (等价的) for life itself and its human experiences. Those who dislike poetry on principle sometimes claim, on the other hand, that poetry is only words and good for nothing. That's not true either. It is easy to become frustrated by words — in poetry or in life — but when words represent and recreate genuine human feelings, as they often do in poetry, they can be very important.Poetry is an experience of words, and those who know how to read poetry can easily extend their experience of life, their sense of what other people are like, their awareness of themselves, and their range of human feelings.
One reason poetry can be so important is that it is so closely concerned with feelings.Poetry is often full of ideas, too, and sometimes poems can be powerful experiences of the mind, but most poems are primarily about how people feel rather than how people think.Poems provide, in fact, a language for feeling, and one of poetry's most outstanding values involves its attempt to express the inexpressible. How can anyone, for example, put into words what it means to be in love or what it feels like to lose someone one cares about? Poetry tries, and it often captures (俘获) exactly the shade of emotion that feels just right to a reader. No single poem can be said to express all the things that love or death feels like, or means, but one of the joys of experiencing poetry occurs when we read a poem and want to say, “Yes, that is just what it is like; I know exactly what that line means but I've never been able to express it so well.”Poetry can be the voice of our feelings even when our minds are speechless with grief or joy.

American researchers say they have found the strongest link yet between ozone pollution and damage to health.Their findings show that shortterm increases in ozone lead to higher death rates in cities.
Ozone is a form of oxygen. The gas is produced naturally in the upper atmosphere to protect the Earth against radiation from the sun. But human activities can also create ozone in the lower atmosphere. Gases from vehicles and industry react with sunlight to form this ozone. Levels usually increase in the warmer months. Ozone is the main chemical in smog, the air pollution that is a combination of fog and smoke.
Ozone has been linked to heart and lung problems especially, and to higher rates of hospital cases. Researchers from Yale University and Johns Hopkins University did the study. Michelle Bell of Yale was the lead researcher. TheJournaloftheAmericanMedicalAssociation published the results. The researchers collected information on 95 American cities. These contain about 40% of the national population. The study compared death rates to ozone levels between 1987 and 2000. The research suggests that even a small increase in ozone, ten parts per thousand million, can lead to higher death rates the following week. The study found that the average daily number of deaths rose 0.5 percent. Heart and lung related deaths rose 0.6 percent. And deaths among older people rose 0.7 percent.
The study is one of the largest ever done of ozone and death rates. The researchers note that ozone is widespread in the United States and many other countries. The United States Environmental Protection Agency is reexamining its air pollution rules. The current limit for ozone is eighty parts per thousand million for an eighthour period. Limits were higher in the past. But the researchers say they found an increase in deaths even below the current levels.

So, You Want to Be a Writer?
What are some tips on becoming a writer?
Read everything you can. Most writers are good readers. They read because they love to lose themselves in books. They like the sounds of languages and the way that reading a good description can feel as satisfying as winning a race or eating really good food. __16__ Do you like stories that are fastpaced and full of unexpected twists? Do you prefer to read books with characters who seem like someone you might know? Do you like to feel scared or do you like a story that makes you laugh until you cry? Think about the types of writing you like best, and try to identify the qualities that attract you.
__17__ It's easy to forget a good idea if you do not record it immediately. If you get into the habit of carrying a notebook or journal with you everywhere you go, you can write down anything you want to remember. When you are talking to friends in the cafeteria or waiting for the bus, something might give you an idea for a character or a scene in a story. You might have a dream you don't want to forget, or you might just write down the lyrics of a song you love. __18__
Do your homework. If you decide that you would like to submit your work for publication, make sure you do your research. If you are sending your writing to a magazine, look through old issues. __19__ If you are submitting to a book publisher, explore their website to make sure your material is similar to (but not exactly the same as) other books they publish.
Stay positive. A writer's life can be frustrating. Sometimes it's hard to sit down and write. __20__ This is why perseverance is an important quality for a writer to have.
A.Talk to friends.
B.Keep a notebook.
C.As you read, pay attention to what speaks to you.
D.You may get many refusals before you receive a single acceptance.
E.Does it seem like your writing fits in with other stories or articles?
F.These everyday thoughts and observations can be material for your writing one day.
G.Writing is a good way to clear your mind and make room for more of the “good stuff”.
16.解析:选C 根据空处所在段落的小标题“Read everything you can”可知,文章给的第一个建议与阅读有关,只有选项C出现了read“阅读”,故选C项。

18.解析:选F 根据空处上文“you can write down anything you want to remember”可知,本段的建议是积累所思及所看,选项F总结了为什么要有一个笔记本,切题。
19.解析:选E 根据空前“If you are sending your writing to a magazine, look through old issues.”和空后“If you are submitting to a book publisher ... they publish.”可知,空处应该介绍投稿时需要注意的事情,故选项E承上启下,切题。
20.解析:选D 根据下文“This is why perseverance is an important quality for a writer to have.”

The idea of becoming a writer had come to me off and on since my childhood, but it wasn't until my third year in high school that the possibility took hold. Until then I'd been bored with everything associated with English courses. I hated it when the assignments (任务分配) turned out long, lifeless paragraphs that were agony (痛苦) for teachers to read and for me to write.
When our class was assigned to Mr Smith for thirdyear English, I saw another cheerless year. Mr Smith had a reputation among us for dullness and inability to inspire students.
I prepared for a fruitless year with Mr Smith and for a long time was not disappointed. Late in the year we dealt with the informal essay. Mr Smith distributed a homework sheet offering us a choice for topics. I took the list home and did nothing until the night before the essay was due. Lying on the sofa, I finally faced up to the unwelcome task, took the list out of my notebook, and scanned it. The topic on which my eyes stopped was “The Art of Eating Spaghetti (意大利面)”.
This title produced an extraordinary series of mental images. Vivid memories came flooding back to a night when all of us were seated around the supper table — Uncle Allen, my mother, Doris — and Aunt Pat served spaghetti for supper. Spaghetti was still a little known foreign dish in those days. Neither Doris nor I had ever eaten spaghetti, and none of the adults had enough experience to be good at it. All the good humor of Uncle Allen's house reawoke in my mind as I recalled the laughing arguments we had that night about the socially respectable method for moving spaghetti from the plate to our mouth.
Suddenly I wanted to write about that, about the warmth and good feeling of it, but I wanted to put it down simply for my own joy, not for Mr Smith. The next morning I turned in my essay.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1:

Paragraph 2:

参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Twodayslaterinclass, MrSmithreturnedeveryone'sgradedpaperexceptmine. A little bit embarrassed, I sank into my seat. Mr Smith must have been annoyed at my essay and he would order me to stay after school for punishment. At the thought of that, my heart sank. But then Mr Smith cleared his throat, signaled us to listen and started to read an essay. It was mine! TheArtofEatingSpaghetti! He read in high spirits, his voice, his hands and his mouth all joining in. And apparently all my classmates were amused. They laughed with openhearted enjoyment. All the good humor of eating spaghetti woke in the class.
Paragraph 2:
IwastryingnottoshowmydelightatthedemonstrationwhenMrSmithwalkedover. He returned my essay and congratulated me. Then he encouraged my classmates to ask me more about the funny experience. Immediately, they gathered around me, asking me to act out the way I moved spaghetti from the plate to my mouth. With pleasure, I did it. Watching my awkwardness and clumsiness, they laughed themselves under the desk. So did I myself. “You are so humorous. You promise to be a good writer!” Mr Smith beamed. He did touch me! And he did inspire me to have taken writing seriously since my third year.
