On the eighth floor, I saw a man reading a book in the day room, who happened to be Michael Goldstein. When I showed him the wallet, his gloomy eyes turned bright.“Hannah still loves you.” I took a deep breath and said, word by word. His voice abandoned him.He seemed to grope for words but failed. He took out the envelope, stared at the familiar handwriting, stroked the wrinkles of it and murmured,“I love her, too.” He paced out with a waddle and lost in my sight.Love may be late, but never absent.

Chen Wei, a high school student in Beijing, was eating dinner when a man named Zhang Tao at another table was choked by steak.Chen Wei carried out the Heimlich first aid and food was discharged.(概述事例,导入主题)
Choking victims usually have only about four minutes before they collapse and sometimes die, leaving no time for an ambulance to arrive. To solve this problem, in 1974, an American doctor, Henry Heimlich, created the Heimlich manoeuvre, saving thousands of lives around the world.Doing the Heimlich manoeuvre is quick, practical, and easy.It is so easy, in fact, that almost anyone can learn how.(总述了“海姆利希急救法”的历史及其特点)
❶If you see someone choking, first call the emergency services. Then, make sure that the victim is really choking: A choking person cannot speak.Slapping the victim's back will often force out the obstruction. If this does not work, you can perform the Heimlich manoeuvre by standing behind him and wrapping your arms around his waist.Make a fist with one hand and place it in the upper part of his stomach.Grabbing your fist with your other hand tightly, push up and into his stomach in one motion.❷Continue doing this until the obstruction is forced out.(介绍“海姆利希急救法”的操作要领)
Doing the Heimlich manoeuvre on a small child is not recommended, as you may hurt him.Instead, lay the child face down on your lap with the head lower than the rest of his body, and then give firm slaps to his upper back until he can breathe again.(介绍运用“海姆利希急救法”救助儿童时的注意事项)
With choking victims, every minute counts. You cannot just stand by and do nothing.Luckily, Chen had learnt how to give first aid in school.Seeing Zhang choking, he remained calm and reacted immediately.Chen later said about the incident, “How could I justify sitting there and doing nothing? We are all humans and we all have a responsibility to look after one another's welfare.”(呼应上文,强调了及时施救的重要性及其社会意义)

A
Children really need to know some basic first aid skills. This is true whether your child is four or fourteen. So what should you teach your children?
Calling for help
Once your child reaches the age of four, he should know all about calling 911 in the event of an emergency. Explain all about what a real emergency is. For example, he should call 911 if an adult asks him to, if an adult passes out and cannot be woken, if there is a fire and he can't find an adult, or if people are hurt.
As I am typing this, I just realized that although my kids are taught about 911, the telephones in the house are out of reach for all but my oldest child (to prevent the other two from playing with the phone). Don't make this_mistake yourself, or your children wouldn't get in touch with the police in time.
Cuts and scrapes(擦伤)
Teach children about basic care for cuts and scrapes. In my house, the kids all know that cuts must be cleaned and know where the bandages are. They also know how to put pressure on a cut to make it stop bleeding. Of course they should ask an adult for help, but they should also know a bit about self care. Believe it or not, I had to help a teenage neighbour once who had no idea what to do when he cut his hand on broken glass. He just ran around in a circle.
Burns
Tell your child that if he ever gets a burn, he should immediately call for help and then run the cool but not cold water for the burn. Getting a burn cooled down quickly can reduce the damage to the skin. This is important if no adult is with your child when a burn occurs.
1.What does the underlined part “this mistake” refer to?
A.Letting kids play with the phone.
B.Stopping kids from using the phone.
C.Not telling kids to call 911.
D.Keeping the phone out of kids' reach.
根据第三段的“... are out of reach for all but my oldest child”可知,画线部分是指不让小孩够到电话这一错误。
2.What does the example of the author's teenage neighbour mainly tell us?
A.Getting help is very important.
B.Even teenagers can cut their hands.
C.Not all teenagers are good at self care.
D.We should be prepared to help others.
根据第四段的“Believe it or not ... just ran around in a circle.”
3.What should we do if we get a burn?
A.Look for the bandages.
B.Put some ice on the burn.
C.Cool the burn under water.
D.Wait for rescuers patiently.
根据末段的“... run the cool but not cold water for the burn”可知,应选C项。
4.What's the text mainly for?
A.Kids. B.Parents.
C.Teachers. D.Students.
根据文章中出现的“Once your child”“Teach children”以及“Tell your child”可知,本文是针对父母写的。
B
If you see someone collapse (晕倒), perhaps as a result of a heart attack, what can you do while you are waiting for an ambulance? Chen Wenqiaochu set a good example when he was 14. He performed CPR on a cleaner at his school, saving the man's life. Chen showed that knowing how to perform CPR can be beneficial.
According to medical experts, there is a “golden period”, the first four minutes of a heart attack, when CPR is most effective in saving the person's life. On August 24, a joint guideline was issued by the Ministry of Education and Red Cross Society of China. It asks all public schools nationwide to provide firstaid courses, including CPR training, as part of health education. CPR is not hard to grasp. All that one needs to learn is how to observe and decide if a person is unconscious, where to press on the patient's chest, and how to blow air through the mouth and into the lungs.
Unfortunately, less than 1 percent of Chinese adults have mastered the skill of CPR, while many have never heard of it. A survey from the Development Research Centre (DRC) of the State Council noted that although 64.6 percent of schools have opened health education courses, the teaching results are not satisfactory, according to China Youth Daily.
Zhao Shengyu, 18, a graduate from a Shandong high school, recalled her first time to be taught CPR in the class. “No model, video or practice was included. I realized the acts I had been taught orally had lots of errors after I was trained another time in a medical school,” she said. Based on her own experience, Zhao said more qualified firstaid courses in schools are necessary. Ding Banghan, a doctor from Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, is a strong supporter for bringing firstaid knowledge into the classroom. “The firstaid course in schools is key for its popularization,” said Ding.
Apart from China, many countries have attached importance to the popularization of firstaid training, including CPR.

D.By performing CPR.

A.CPR is the most effective way in saving the person's life.
B.The firstaid course has already been provided in all public schools.
C.Chinese public schools will provide firstaid courses in the near future.
D.There is no need to learn how to perform CPR for us ordinary people.
7.What is Ding Banghan's attitude towards bringing firstaid knowledge into the classroom?
A.Supportive. B.Indifferent.
C.Disapproving. D.Neutral.
故选A。
8.What's the main idea of this passage?
A.Chen Wenqiaochu sets a good example for all the Chinese.
B.It's urgent and necessary to bring firstaid knowledge including CPR into the classroom.
C.What is CPR.
D.How to perform CPR correctly.

A.Kids. B.Parents.
C.Teachers. D.Students.
