Conservation Volunteers for Endangered Animals
Overview
The program in Australia is meant for all those animal lovers who want to volunteer abroad for a meaningful cause and contribute effectively toward the well-being of the native animals. Being a volunteer, you’ll get to work at a rescue center or a shelter, which has lots of animals in care at any given time.
Program Requirements
Volunteers must be 18 years old or older, with an open mind and a flexible attitude to working in a new and different environment. The program is open to all and you do not need any necessary qualifications (资历)to join it. Participants should be prepared to work outdoors and should be fit and healthy. Volunteers must note that this is a hands-off project and you are not allowed to touch animals unless given specific permission.
Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities
As a volunteer for this program, every day your activities may consist of:
*preparing food for the animals
*cleaning the animal enclosures(围场)
*keeping the project grounds clean and tidy
During Your Free Time Volunteers can choose to spend time in Gladstone or start to do some of the interesting things in the surrounding areas. The Great Barrier Reef is a good choice for volunteers to do a dive course or live aboard. Only minutes from the project location is Gladstone’s famous natural landmark Mount Larcom. It is commonly referred to as the “lion mountain“, because it looks like a lion and a lioness that are facing each other. Sisters Gipsy and Gelssy Rodriguez of Anaheim, California, are the social media powerhouses behind their parents’ popular quincea era dress shop, Moda2000.
The store has more than 3.3 million followers on TikTok, 200,000 followers on Instagram and even has its own You Tube TV show, “Quince Empire”.
In 2015, social media was gaining popularity and the sisters saw this as an opportunity to help get the word out about Moda2000. Gipsy and Gelssy Rodriguez taught themselves about social media strategy on the fly, and decided to post videos of their clothes first to YouTube and Instagram, and eventually to TikTok.
“We kind of just posted a video not knowing what was going to happen,” Gipsy Rodriguez said. “TikTok was new at the time…and we posted and. we went to dinner that night and our phones were just blowing up.”

While their parents are still very involved in the store, Gipsy and Gelssy Rodriguez, who now serve as the brand’s creative director and store’s operations director, respectively, are slowly taking over the reins.
For the whole family, Moda2000’s growth has felt representative of the “American Dream“. “My parents literally started with $0 from anybody else, and to this day, we haven’t taken any outside capital or anything like that,” Gelssy Rodriguez said. “And not only did they make such a successful business, but they also made an impact within the industry that we are in and we’ve become industry leaders”

When Wilbur and Orville Wright finished their flight at Kitty Hawk, Americans celebrated the brotherly bond. The brothers had grown up playing together, they had been in the newspaper business together, and they had built an airplane together. They even said they "thought together." However, when the Wright brothers said they thought together, what they really meant is that they argued together. After long arguments we often found ourselves in the position of each having been pulled to the other's side,"
Orville reflected. I don't think they really got mad," their mechanic (机械师) remembered, but they sure got awfully hot."
The skill to get hot without getting mad is critical in life. But it’s one that few parents teach to their kids. We want to give kids a stable home, so we ѕtор ѕіblіngѕ (兄弟姐妹) from quаrrеlіng and we have our own arguments behind closed doors. Yet if kids never get exposed to disagreement, we’ll end up limiting their creativity. As the psychologist Robert Albert put it, the creative person-to-be comes from a family that is anything but harmonious, one with a “wobble (摇晃).”Orville Wright came from a wobbly family. The brothers often watched their father Milton Wright fight with school authorities who weren't fond of his decision to let his kids miss a half-day of school from time to time to learn on their own.
The Wright brothers weren't t alone. The Beatles fought over instruments and tunes. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak argued constantly while designing the first Apple computer. Brainstorming groups generate16 percent more ideas when the members are encouraged to criticize one another. The most creative ideas in Chinese technology companies come from teams that have real disagreement early on.
Children need to learn the value of thoughtful disagreement. We should teach kids that silence is bad manners. It disrespects the value of your own view point and your own voice. It's a sign of respect to care enough about someone's opinion that you’re willing to challenge it. Good arguments are wobbly: a team or family might rock back and forth but it never tips over. If kids don't learn to wobble, they never learn to walk; they end up standing still.
8.What does the author say about the Wright brothers?
A.They always took advice from their mechanic.
B.They knew little about the newspaper business.
C.They often held conflicting opinions.
D.They kept a very tense relationship.
9.What sort of father was Milton Wright?
A.Untraditional. B.Generous.
C.Scholarly. D.Sensitive.
10.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?
A.Summarize the previous paragraphs. B.Add some background information.
C.Introduce a new topic for discussion. D.Provide more examples to support his idea.
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.Conversation matter in a family kids B.Uncomfortable silence harms Kids.
C.Kids, would you please start fighting: D.Parents, would you please stop arguing?
D
You have everything you think you need for your dream job, but could something else be holding you back? You possess hard skills for the job, but you may lack soft skills. Hard skills are things that are measurable and technical. A master’s degree in business is a hard skill. The ability to speak Spanish is a hard skill. Many specific qualifications for a job are hard skills, such as years of work experience or proficiency (精通) with particular computer programs.
On the other hand, soft skills are harder to define. And they can’t be defined. And they can’t be measured. Soft skills covers a wide range of characteristics that you can work on for a lifetime but some of the most common and most necessary for success include being a good listener and speaker, a wise leader, a problem solver, a strong communicator or a team player. It’s also helpful if you can accept feedback, settle conflicts with others, deal with difficult people or be flexible. These soft skills are what many employers desire.
Soft skills benefit you in many ways. Being a good listener, for example, is very helpful if you’re a doctor. Being flexible, a team player and a problem solver help you succeed when dealing with deadlines.
Soft skills are something extra that help a particular person to succeed. Being able to show you possess them could make a difference in landing a job you’ll love, or being more successful in the job you already have. They make the difference between someone who is just OK at their job and someone who is outstanding, the person you always want on your team. In general, soft skills make you more likable and more competent.
Soft skills are what can set people apart from each other on resumés or in job interviews, but soft skills don’t come naturally.
12.Which of the following belongs to hard skills?
A.Having a good command of English. B.Communicating with others efficiently.
C.Being good at expressing oneself. D.Being able to solve problems.
13.Which of the following is TRUE about soft skills?
A.They are measurable and technical. B.They are taught in many universities.
C.They are desired by many employers. D.They are specific job qualifications.
14.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Hard Skills Differ from Soft Skills B.Soft skills Can Be Learnt at School
C.Soft Skills Needed in Workplace D.Soft Skills Matter to Your Success at Work
15.What will be probably talked about following the last paragraph?
A.Why soft skills are important. B.How soft skills are developed.
C.Where soft skills are applied. D.What the key soft skills are.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
We often try to save every drop of water in gardening. Yet this summer, over half of the world is experiencing “abnormally dry” weather, which means millions of people are living under drought conditions. 16 Here are suggestions for how to keep your garden healthy during periods of dry weather.
Choosing water-saving plants
If you are gardening under water restrictions, decide which plants need water least. Older trees, especially fruit, nut, and even evergreens, can suffer during drought, while newly planted trees require regular watering until their roots become established. 17 They can usually get by with less water than crops like corn, which have shallow roots.
Watering effectively
Most plants require an average of 2 to 4 centimeters of water each week under normal conditions. That need could increase, however, during periods of extreme heat, when the soil dries out more quickly. 18 Divide it over two or three times per week with less water. Remember deeper, less-frequent watering instead of daily sprinkle helps get the roots really wet. Also avoid watering midday when moisture is likely to disappear before reaching roots.
19
Consider using recycled household water, also called gray water, to water plants. Unsalted water left over from boiling eggs or vegetables provides extra nutrients. Dish and bath water that is not too oily will not harm plants. 20
A.Using fresh clean water.
B.Choosing recycled water.
C.And melons have deep roots.
D.Try to water your plants all at once.
E.Do not water your plants once weekly.
F.And many of the people have plants to worry about.
G.And water from washing fruits and vegetables can be used around the garden.

第二节、读后续写
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
When I was young, my mother was going to Florida to visit my grandmother. I begged her to take me with her. “I’ll take you, but remember,” my mother warned me, “Grandma is sick.“ I had seen plenty of sick people before, so I figured it wouldn’t be a big deal. Besides, by the time we got to Florida, my grandma would probably be okay. Then we would have fun just as we used to. I remembered how excited I had felt the summer before when my grandma carried me on her shoulders down the streets.
Grandma was a great storyteller and her stories made me feel special whenever she told them. ”Grandma, tell me a story,“ I’d say, and she would always begin the story, “Once upon a time there was a boy named Billy…” Every story started with a boy named after me. When I arrived at her house, my first words were going to be, “Grandma, tell me a story.”
When I got to Grandma’s house, she didn’t come out to meet me. Even after I ran up the steps, she still didn’t come out to meet me. I went into her bedroom. Instantly, I was seized by terror and disgust, because what I saw in that room wasn’t my happy-go-lucky(无忧无虑的)grandmother. It was a crumpled(皱的)body, thin and weak.
That night as I lay in bed, I heard my grandma moaning in pain. It had the same effect on me as someone running fingernails across the blackboard. It was so annoying that I just wanted to tell her to stop. However, I didn’t and it continued all night.
A few weeks after we came home, my mother asked me whether it was all right if Grandma came to live with us. I said yes, but in reality I never wanted to see her again. Although my grandma lived with us for the next few months, I never went into her room. She couldn’t get out of bed. I didn’t have to see her.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day, my grandma called me as I walked by her room. I didn’t want to go.

46.Friend Matters
Starting a new school life is never easy, especially for a shy girl like me. But Li Hua, my first friend at senior high, has made my school life wonderful.
It was in a PE class that we got to know each other. The teacher asked us to pair up for a basketball practice. I was too shy to make the first move. Frozen in a panic, I had no idea what to do when I heard a sweet voice behind me. “Let’s play together.” Turning around, I saw a smiling face. “Sure!” I replied happily. We spent the whole class practicing, talking and laughing. We just had so much in common, and we soon became close friends.
Friendship really matters! It is our friends who make our life joyful and meaningful! I feel so lucky to have Li Hua in my life!
47. One day, my grandma called me as I walked by her room. I didn’t want to go. But she called me several times, so I had to go in. The moment I entered the room, I smelled a strong smell of medicine mixed with other smells. My bony grandmother lay in bed, her cheekbones high, her cheeks sunken, and her face and hands wrinkled. Seeing this, I couldn’t help stopping my steps.
I was about to run out of the room and leave the scene behind forever when she began to tell a story. I burst into tears when I heard “There was a boy named Billy...”. I went over and sat by the bed, holding my grandmother’s bony hand and listening to her story. Although her voice was weak, it was enough to remind me of those happy days in the past. I smiled at my grandmother and listened to her quietly.
