Teaching the next generation is an effective way to change the future. A nonprofit in Israel has taken this to heart by greening schools with soilless farming. It is called Startup Roots, which is teaching students about hydroponics(水培), and as a result, they are learning nutrition and science.
"Many children think that vegetables come from the grocery store. They have no concept of the chain behind it. So we try to connect kids with the source of their food," said Robin Katz, founder of this organization. Katz started it in 2014 realizing that many children have no access to fresh, healthy and affordable produce. She was drawn to hydroponics because this system uses 90 percent less water and grows more plants per meter than traditional farming.
Their first project created a soilless farm using just 100 square meters of a school. They started out by growing 14 plants per meter. The students were excited to see results in just 30 days and were soon able to produce 1500 vegetables per month!
Working with science teachers, the organization guides students to learn science and nutrition. In addition, it has brought in nutritionists to teach the effect that food choices have on health. It soon improved their methods by fixing vertical farming systems. Since then, their production has improved greatly, resulting in the production of 120 plants per meter.
In order to educate the general population, the organization is also working to create an interactive urban agriculture exhibit, which is transforming students by turning them into interactive learners. More youth have become so fascinated by the process, they are eagerly researching plant seeds and are growing plants.
"There is no greater pleasure than to watch students grow by growing," said Katz. Aside from producing organic vegetables in schools, the organization is planting roots in this young generation, inspiring them to lead healthier and more environmentally-friendly lives.
24. Why did Robin Katz show interest in hydroponics?
A. It took less land than traditional farming. B. It caused no damage to the environment.
C. It was easy to produce good vegetables. D. It saved water and had a higher yield.
25. What can we learn about the first soilless farm?
A. It produced 120 plants per meter. B. It relied on vertical farming systems.
C. It produced vegetables in a month. D. It was designed by science teachers.
26. What is the final influence of the new farming system?
A. Students will grow better plants. B. Students will change their lifestyle.
C. Students will protect environment. D. Students will eat organic vegetables.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Inspiring Future Hydroponic Farming B. A Soilless Farm on Exhibition
C. Researching Plant Seeds in Future D. Helping Students Grow Better
C
A team of researchers from several institutions in the UK and one in Estonia has created a type of buoy(浮标) that has proven to be effective at frightening seabirds, thus preventing them from getting caught in gillnets—a type of vertical fishing net that is made of a material that makes it nearly invisible underwater.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of seabirds die when they get caught in gillnets. Some estimates suggest that up to a half-million birds are caught in them each year. Over the years, researchers have created devices to prevent the birds from trying to catch fish near or in gillnets, but those didn't work well.
To find a way that would work for all seabirds, the researchers first studied seabirds in a general sense, looking to find things that they would avoid. They noted that seabirds avoided eye contact with other creatures. Then the researchers came up with a simple idea. They put a small pole to a regular buoy and then attached a pair of googly eyes(金鱼眼) to the top of it. They made the eyes big enough so that even birds with poor eyesight, such as geese, would see them. Adding to the effectiveness of the device, waves made the eyes move back and forth. And the wind made the buoy spin very slowly, making sure that birds from every direction would get a good look at the eyes.
To test their idea, the researchers selected several sites near gillnets and counted how many birds approached and how many attempted to catch fish near the nets. They then set up their googly-eyed buoys and once again counted birds. Over the course of 62 days, they found the number of birds that tried to catch fish near the gillnets dropped by approximately 25% for a distance of up to 50 meters. They also found that the birds were less likely to fish near where the buoys had been for up to three weeks after they had been removed.
28. What is the function of paragraph 2?
A. Introducing a new topic to discuss. B. Providing background information.
C. Summarizing the previous paragraph. D. Pointing out the main idea of the text.
29. Why did the researchers make the googly eyes big?
A. To ensure all the seabirds can see them. B. To clearly observe seabirds' eye contact.
C. To allow them to survive the strong wind. D. To effectively identify the right direction.
30. What does the researchers' test result mainly suggest?
A. The new device still needs improving. B. Gillnets are a death valley for seabirds.
C. Seabirds hardly catch fish near the nets. D. The googly-eyed buoy proves effective.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. A group of researchers interested in seabirds. B. A way to help seabirds catch fish effectively.
C. A device keeping seabirds safe from gillnets. D. A googly-eyed buoy guiding seabirds to hunt.
D
Imagine the feeling of swinging at a baseball going 100 miles per hour without leaving your living room, or being in a race car as it roars down the track, while you are sitting on the couch.
These are just some of the ways that sports business leaders say virtual reality (VR) will revolutionize how people train for and experience sports. Virtual and augmented realities are together known as mixed reality (MR). "American footballers are already using VR to better train their minds and read the field," Ludden said. "This can allow players to perfect their skills without risking injury."
Canadian company D-BOX Technologies designs and produces moving seats found in cinema and theme parks. It is now moving into sports, and shows its Formula One (F1) racing simulator. The seats stimulate the force of gravity, speed and every vibration as F1 champion Lewis Hamilton moves fast around city streets.
The simulation seat uses pre-programed data now. Someday, though, it could use real-time information sent by the car. "They could broadcast live content through a network in pop-up theaters around the world," Ludden said. Say you want to experience the true stress of a batter(击球手) being up against major-league baseball pitcher. "You can have a heartbeat added to the sensation on the seat and then you can feel it, boom, boom," Maheu explained. "When he swings and hits the ball, you can have an impact."
One day, fans around the world could physically experience every game from their favorite player in real time. Ludden said that current and near-future technology could create "augmented stadiums" for live audiences. Panasonic launched its "Smart Venue" plans which included the overlaying(覆盖) of images, advertisements, player statistics and replays on the field of play at a pro football game. "If you are seated in the cheap seats, you can see this being really useful," Ludden said. "Fans may someday join in stadium-wide games, using the field as a virtual gaming platform," he added.
32. What does the underlined phrase "read the field" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Get off the playing field. B. Build up a football court.
C. Ask players to play on the spot. D. Judge the situation on the field.
33. What does Maheu think audiences can do in the future baseball game?
A. Enjoy live content in any theater. B. Program the simulation seats in advance.
C. Control the force and speed of the baseball. D. Experience the real-time game with the player.
34. What does Ludden mainly describe in the last paragraph?
A. A future stadium. B. The origin of VR.
C. An advertisement platform. D. The expectations of audiences.
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. VR can improve players' skills for sports.
B. VR increases fans' joy in the baseball game.
C. VR can improve sports experience for players and fans.
D. VR promises a new future for football players and games.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In a noisy world, the sound of silence is a gentle friend. Though it's available to all, silence is rarely embraced. Quiet relaxes, restores and helps you a lot. 36 The average person wakes up to an alarm and then turns on the radio or TV. Outside, planes roar and cars honk. In fact, too much noise can actually reduce your cognitive function and lifespan.
It is time to tap into silence, a necessary and forgotten natural resource. Just setting aside 30 minutes a day for pure silence is healing. Shut off your phone, turn off the music, and spend time alone. Similar to meditation, this precious time allows your brain to refresh cognitive functions including creativity. 37
Two hours of silence per day can be helpful to cell development in the brain, where memories are formed. Even though relaxing music can be effective, silence is ideal. 38 When surrounded by silence, your consciousness has more freedom to process information. This can lead to better decision making and more acute self-awareness.
39 A recent report suggested that one in three people lose a whole year off their life due to noise. And this is linked to heart disease, sleep loss and high blood pressure.
Although many find silence to be empty and boring, it is a gift and a rare thing like gold. 40
And then simply stay with it. When you embrace it and let it fill you, you are open to healing and wellness.
A. Silence can generate brain cells.
B. Silence may assist in self-reflection.
C. Too much noise can have the opposite effect.
D. Try to move forward to a place of pure silence.
E. Noise can improve your ability to calm down quickly.
F. You may be so used to sounds and you hardly notice them.
G. This time will also help you to reconnect with your inner self.

Online games have become popular among students in recent year. As we can easily see, the number of students have enjoyed pleasure from these games. But some students lacks self-discipline in their daily life are too addicted to these games that their health is affected. This phenomenon has been caused some parents to worry.
From my point of view, online games can make you entertaining if you play them in a reasonably way. When they affect your study too much, it is better for you to give it up at once. Enough self-control over them is that makes you obtain real pleasure and it can help you benefit them.
