    句法分析rather than意为“而不是……;不是……,而是……;与其说……,倒不如说……”。rather than常用于平行结构中,其前后的成分应该对等一致。rather than连接的并列成分可以是名词、代词、形容词、动词、动词-ing形式、动词不定式、介词(短语)、分句等。

    2.【教材原文】I ften walk r ride a bike instead f taking a taxi.(page 29)我经常步行或骑自行车而不是乘出租车。句法分析instead f是介词,意为“代替;而不是”,后接名词、代词、动词-ing形式做宾语,表示被取代的内容。但有时为了保持前后对等,instead f后面也可接形容词、副词、动词、动词不定式或介词短语等。

    温馨提示instead 是副词,意为“代替;而是;反而;却”,可位于句首或句末,位于句首时,还常用逗号与句子其他部分隔开。 He didn't get angry with me.Instead,he said he liked my wrds very much. 他没生我的气,而是说很喜欢我说的话。 If Harry is nt well enugh t g with yu,take me instead. 如果亨利不舒服不能跟你去,带我去吧。
    单句语法填空(1)Taking exercise every day makes him lk yunger instead f  lder (ld). (2)I stayed at my uncle's hme instead f  at  the htel. 
    完成句子(3)我经常给他提些建议而不是给他钱。I ften give him sme advice  instead  f  mney .(4)他提议读些书而不是玩游戏。He prpsed t read sme bks instead f  t   play   games . (5)天气暖和的时候,他常常在树下而不是在图书馆里读书。In warm weather he ften reads bks under a tree instead   f   in   the   library . 
    直接引语和间接引语一、定义引用或转述别人说的话时有两种方法:直接引述别人的原话,叫直接引语(direct speech)。用自己的话转述别人的话,叫间接引语(indirect speech)。一般来讲,直接引语前后要加引号,间接引语不用引号,而用宾语从句来表达。Jhn said,“I'm ging t Lndn with my father.”→Jhn said that he was ging t Lndn with his father.
    二、人称变化的三原则1.“第一人称随主”原则如果直接引语中的主语是第一人称或被第一人称所修饰,在间接引语中,从句中的人称要按照主句中主语的人称而变化。Mary said,“I want t have a cmputer f my wn.”→Mary said that she wanted t have a cmputer f her wn.
    2.“第二人称随宾”原则如果直接引语中的主语及宾语是第二人称或被第二人称修饰,在间接引语中,从句中的人称要跟引号外的主句的宾语一致。如果引号外的主句没有宾语,也可以用第一人称。Her clleague said t her,“Wh did yu ask fr a leave?”→Her clleague asked her wh she had asked fr a leave.
    3.“第三人称不更新”原则指直接引语变间接引语时,如果直接引语中的主语及宾语是第三人称或被第三人称修饰,在间接引语中,从句中的人称一般不需要变化。Mr Li said,“Jack is a gd wrker.”→Mr Li said Jack was a gd wrker.
    三、时态的变化直接引语变间接引语时,如果主句为过去时态,则间接引语的时态相应向前推一个时态。如下表所示:
    His friend said t him,“We are planning t have a picnic.”→His friend tld him that they were planning t have a picnic.The rganiser said,“We have begun ur plan.”→The rganiser said that they had begun their plan.
    温馨提示在以下几种情况下,直接引语变为间接引语时,时态一般不变化。(1)直接引语是客观真理、谚语或格言。“The earth mves arund the sun and the mn mves arund the earth,” the teacher tld me.→The teacher tld me the earth mves arund the sun and the mn mves arund the earth.
    (2)直接引语是过去进行时,时态不变。Jack said,“Jhn,where were yu ging when I met yu in the street?”→Jack asked Jhn where he was ging when he met him in the street.(3)直接引语中有具体的过去的某年、某月、某日做状语,变为间接引语时,时态不变。Xia Wang said,“I was brn n April 20,1980.”→Xia Wang said he was brn n April 20,1980.
    (4)直接引语如果是一般现在时,表示一种反复出现或习惯性的动作,变间接引语时,时态不变。He said,“I get up at six every mrning.” →He said he gets up at six every mrning. (5)如果直接引语中的情态动词没有过去时的形式(例:ught t,had better,used t)和已经是过去时的形式(例:culd,shuld,wuld,might),时态不变。 Peter said,“Yu had better cme tday.” →Peter said I had better cme that day.
    四、连接词的选择1.直接引语如果是陈述句,间接引语应改为由that引导的宾语从句。He said,“Yu tld me this stry.”→He said that I had tld him that stry.
    2.直接引语如果是一般疑问句、选择疑问句或附加疑问句,间接引语中用whether(或 nt)或if引导。She said,“Is yur father an engineer?”→She asked me whether my father was an engineer.“Yu have finished the hmewrk,haven't yu?” my mther asked.→My mther asked me whether I had finished the hmewrk.He said,“D yu g t schl by bus r by bike?”→He asked me if I went t schl by bus r by bike.
    3.直接引语如果是特殊疑问句,间接引语应改为由疑问代词或疑问副词引导的宾语从句(宾语从句必须用陈述句语序)。“Where have yu been,Li Ming?” the teacher asked.→The teacher asked Li Ming where he had been.
    4.直接引语如果是祈使句,变间接引语时主句的谓语动词应根据直接引语的口气换用ask,invite,advise,warn,tell,rder等词,而原直接引语中的谓语动词则变为不定式。He said,“Sit dwn,please.”→He asked me t sit dwn.The teacher said,“Dn't talk in class!”→The teacher tld us nt t talk in class!
    5.直接引语如果是以“Let's”开头的祈使句,变为间接引语时,通常用“suggest +动名词(或从句)”。He said,“Let's g t the film.”→He suggested ging t the film./He suggested that they shuld g t the film.
    6.若直接引语中祈使句是否定形式,变间接引语时,不定式符号t前要加nt或never。She said,“Dn't make s much nise,children!”→She tld the children nt t make s much nise.7.如果直接引语部分是感叹句,改为间接引语时,引导词可以用该感叹句的感叹词(即what或hw)引导,也可以用that引导。She said,“What a lvely day it is!”→She said what a lvely day it was.
    8.若直接引语中的一般疑问句是由表示委婉语气的wuld, culd等构成的疑问句,转换为间接引语时句子的谓语动词常用asked。“Can yu lend me tw yuan?” he asked me.→He asked me if I culd lend him tw yuan.
    五、直接引语变为间接引语时,从句中的指示代词、时间状语、地点状语及某些动词也要做出相应的变化。
    She said,“I will cme this evening.”→She said that she wuld g that evening.“I will cme here again tday,” he said.→He said that he wuld g there again that day.“Please wait fr me at the gate f the Summer Palace at tw tmrrw afternn,” Kate said t her friend.→Kate asked her friend t wait fr her at the gate f the Summer Palace at tw the next afternn.
    单句语法填空(1)My mther asked me whether/if I had finished the hmewrk. (2)Lily said that she wuld g (g) back the next mnth. (3)He said Clumbus discvered (discver) America in 1492. 
    (4)The pliceman warned the children nt t play (nt play) ftball in the middle f the street. (5)She said that she was writing (write) a letter when he kncked at the dr. 
    句型转换(6)She asked,“Have yu seen the film?”→She asked me whether/if I had seen the film. (7)She asked us,“Where are yu ging t get ff?”→She asked us where we were  ging t get ff. (8)The teacher tld the students t use their time wisely.→The teacher said t the students,“Use yur time wisely.” 
    (9)He asked me if I wuld g t Beijing by air the next day.→He asked me,“ Will yu g t Beijing by air next day?”
