    Brn in a pr farmer's family in 1930 and as a graduate f Suthwest Agricultural Cllege in 1953,Yuan Lngping began his teaching career at an agricultural schl in Anjiang,Hunan Prvince.
    He came up with an idea fr hybridising rice in the 1960s, when a series f natural disasters caused China t suffer a severe famine1 that led t many deaths.Since then,he had been devting himself t the research and develpment f a better rice breed.
    In 1964,Yuan happened t find a natural hybrid rice plant that had bvius advantages ver thers.Greatly encuraged,he began t study the elements f this particular type.
    In 1973,in cperatin with thers,Yuan was finally able t establish a cmplete prcess f creating and reprducing high-yielding hybrid rice species.The next year they successfully cultivated2 a type f hybrid rice species which had great advantages.It yielded 20 percent mre per unit than that f cmmn nes,putting China in the lead wrldwide in rice prductin.Fr this achievement,Yuan was called the “father f hybrid rice”.
    In 1979,Yuan's technique fr hybrid rice was intrduced int the United States,the first case f intellectual prperty rights3 transfer in the histry f China.
