This Sunderland postman has become a legend in his community by bringing a smile to people of Boldon's faces.
After seeing the mood of his much-loved customers change following the COVID-19 lockdown, Jon Matson came up with a way to make each day brighter for the families that he sees on his rounds, so Jon decided to dress up in fancy dress to lift their spirits and families. So far their posts have been delivered by a cheerleader, Little Bo Peep and a Gladiator.
After taking part in the South Shields Cancer Connections Boxing Day Dip every year, Jon had a drawer full of fancy dress outfits at home, so the father of two decided to put them to good use on his rounds. The 39-year-old said, “From doing my rounds every day I've got to know people well and I saw how their moods changed. I had a drawer full of outfits so I thought why not dress up and cheer them up.”
For many families, a postman may be the only person that they will see every day and Jon is on a mission to lift their spirits-showing what true community spirit is all about.
The Sunderland postman initially planned to do this a few times a week. But after being overwhelmed by the reaction of his customers and on social media, Jon has been collecting new outfits from family members to make sure he can continue every day.
He added, “It's been fantastic. It's been so lovely to be able to bring a smile back to my customers' faces. Of course, as a key worker, I'm obviously worried about the coronavirus but that's always in the back of mind but I have to keep it there and carry on. By doing this and seeing my customers' smiles it's helping me to keep my spirits up too.”
Zoe Grant, who lives on Jon s postal route, is full of praise for her postman. She said, “Being on lockdown is hard for all residents. He’s doing an amazing job keeping community spirits high and bringing a smile to the people of Boldon.”

Ever since humanity began to farm our own food, we've faced the unpredictable rain that is both friend and enemy. It comes and goes without much warning, and a field of leafy greens one year can dry up and blow away the next. Food security and fortunes depend on sufficient rain, and nowhere more so than in Africa, where 96% of farmland depends on rain instead of the irrigation common in more-developed places. It has consequences: South Africa's ongoing drought — the worst in three decades — will cost it at least a quarter of its corn harvest this year.
Biologist Jill Farrant of the University of Cap Town in South Africa says that nature has plenty of answers for people who want to grow crops in places with unpredictable rainfall. She is hard at work finding a way to take qualities from rare wild plants that are adapted to extreme dry weather and use them in food crops." The type of farming I am aiming for is literally so that people can survive as it's going to get drier and drier," Farrant says.
Extreme conditions produce extremely tough plants and a few fierce plants are highly adaptable to the everchanging conditions. Farrant calls one of them resurrection plants During months without water under a harsh sun, they fade and contract until they look like a pile of dead green leaves but rainfall can revive them in the matter of hours. That is to say, when they detect and extend dry period, they produce sugars and certain stress-associated proteins and other materials in their tissues to enter a glass-like state that is “the most stable state that a plant can maintain”.
Last year, after Chinese team published a draft genome (基因组)of rock violet, one of the best studied resurrection plants, Farrant and colleagues published a detailed study of another candidate. One or both of these models will help researchers test their ideas-so far mostly done in the lab-on test plots.
28. Which can be responsible for the reduction in corn crop in South Africa?
A. Facing unpredictable rain.
B. Lacking advanced irrigation.
C. The food security.
D. The ongoing drought.
29. Why does Jill Farrar conduct the relevant study?
A. To maintain the most stable state of tough plants.
B. To grow crops in places with unpredictable rainfall.
C. To apply the special quality of wild plants to human farming.
D. To survive extreme dry weather and ever-changing conditions.
30. What does the underlined word “contract” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. shrink B. die C. withdraw D. rest
31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The research is still on trial.
B. Chinese team worked harder.
C. One of the candidates has been put into use.
D. The results contribute to resurrection plants.
D
Carbon dioxide makes up less than one percent of the Earth’s atmosphere. But the gas is very important to life on Earth. Scientists are finding that processes involving carbon dioxide affect our climate in ways that are difficult to understand. Last month, a committee of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington released a report. It confirmed that increased about six-tenths of a degree Celsius in the last one hundred years. The report also confirmed evidence that the level of carbon dioxide is increasing.
The best information about climate in the past comes from tests of ice many kilometers deep in Antarctica and Greenland. The tests show changes in temperature during the past four-hundred-thousand years. These tests show that levels of carbon dioxide today are the highest ever measured. These findings have led scientists to believe that carbon dioxide is a major cause of climate warming.
Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere when fuel is burned. Oil, coal and wood are all fuels that release the gas. When biological waste breaks down, it also releases carbon dioxide.
However, plants use carbon dioxide in the process called photosynthesis. This process provides food for almost all life on Earth. Some groups that support burning oil and coal want to increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. They oppose international efforts to control carbon dioxide.
Some scientists believe that forests and trees are able to capture large amounts of carbon dioxide from the air. Some groups even suggest carbon dioxide could cause plants to grow faster.
A recent study in North Carolina found that more carbon dioxide in the air could cause trees to grow faster. But the researchers found the effect appears to last for only three years. Another study showed that much of the carbon dioxide that is taken in by trees is released within three years. The study noted that leaves release carbon dioxide when they fall from trees and break down in the soil. Plants also naturally release carbon dioxide through the process of respiration.
The natural balance of gases in the atmosphere is a complex scientific issue. The debate over carbon dioxide is only one part of efforts to understand world climate change.
32. The committee report of National Academy of Sciences in Washington reveal that________.
A. ice from Antarctica and Greenland is appropriate to show the change
B. carbon dioxide is released mainly from the fuel
C. level of carbon dioxide increases with global temperatures
D. carbon dioxide is helpful for tree growth
33. According to this passage, those people disagree with the control of carbon dioxide because________.
A. they think that carbon is beneficial for plant growth
B. they want to use more fuels that can emit carbon dioxide
C. they think carbon dioxide is not the main reason for global warming
D. they think it will destroy the natural balance of gases in the world
34. The word “issue” in the last paragraph can be replaced as ________.
A. organ B. topic
C. publication D. result
35. Those studies carried out in North Carolina suggest that ________.
A. trees’ function for absorbing carbon dioxide is limited
B. carbon dioxide is the main cause for global warming
C. leaves falling from trees can emit more oxygen
D. more carbon dioxide is beneficial for trees’ growth for many decades

分析句子结构,____1____ has been transformed into the "Ice Cube” for next year's Olympic Winter Games curling(冰壶)competition.

similar…to与……

【答案】71. goes→going 或在goes 前加that/which 72. benefit→benefits 73. knowledges→ knowledge 74. relaxing→relaxed 75. what→which 76.energetically→energetic 77. 删除 much 78. your→ our 79.good 后的to →for 80. 在world 前加 the
故将goes改为going 或在goes前加that/which。
故将what改为which。
故删除much。
故将your改为our。
be good for意为“对……有益”;be good to意为“对…… 故将good 后的 to 改为 for。
故在world前加the。
