We all have friends who make us frown when they walk in. We know that within five minutes they will have us completely depressed, and we feel that there is nothing we can do about it. Their lives are desperate, sad, tragic, bored or whatever, and if you have a sympathetic ear, you listen and they are likely to keep coming back to tell you more. Do you know why? It makes them feel better. But you just want to jump out the nearest window, and they leave whistling and smelling the roses.
If you are surrounded by people like this, it may be impossible to get them out of your life because they’re your biggest customer, a relative or your business partner. But whatever else you do, you really do need to draw a line in the sand. If more of the people you mix with are negative than positive, you have a problem, which will only get worse over time and keep you trapped in the cycle of feeling overwhelmed.
I made a very conscious decision a number of years ago about the type of people I would have in my life. I want to be surrounded by energetic, enthusiastic and positive people who are getting on with their lives. I don’t care what they do for a living, how much money they have or who they know. All I care about is their zest for life. These people inspire and motivate me to be the best person I can be; they are supportive of any decision or change that will help me to achieve this goal. If I fail, they are the first people to support me and say at least I gave it a go.
If I listened to the negative people, I wouldn’t do anything, because life is clearly so messed up that there is nothing I can possibly do that would make it any better. There is no malicious intention in these people, and it’s just a reflection of where they are in life at the time. And that is sad, but we all need to decide if we want to be equally sad. I made the decision not to and that was that.
I suggest keeping such people at arm’s length. Some of them won’t like you for it. Be prepared for some bad results, but try it because the pay-off is big. And developing a proper way will make it easier.
4. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To explain the reason. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To criticize the behavior. D. To analyze the phenomenon.
5. Which of the following does the author agree with?
A. The identity of a person matters when we choose who to mix with.
B. We must stay away from a negative person even if he is our customer.
C. Being negative is a reflection of the state of life negative people are in.
D. The more negative people we stay with, the less overwhelmed we will be.
6. What does the underlined word “zest” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Doubt. B. Control. C. Expectation. D. Enthusiasm.
7. What is the author likely to talk about in the following paragraph?
A. How to define the pay-off. B. How to ignore the bad results.
C. How to say no to a friend you dislike. D. How to keep a distance from negative people.
B 5. B 6. D 7. D

I don’t care what they do for a living, how much money they have or who they know.(我希望周围都是精力充沛、热情、积极向上的人,他们的生活很好。

根据最后一段“I suggest keeping such people at arm’s length. Some of them won’t like you for it. Be prepared for some bad results, but try it because the pay-off is big. And developing a proper way will make it easier.(我建议与这样的人保持距离。有些人会因此不喜欢你。要为一些不好的结果做好准备,但要尝试,因为回报是巨大的。制定一个合适的方法会让它更容易)”可推知,作者很可能在接下来的段落中谈到如何与消极的人保持距离。故选D。
C
Nine out of every ten humans are right-handed, an imbalance that researchers for decades have attempted to explain, without definitive success.
One of the ideas considered is the fighting hypothesis (假说), which suggests that left-handedness provides an advantage in fight, although with an overall hit to physical health that keeps lefties rare in the population. Indeed, males-who historically have competed most strongly for resources and mates - are left-handed at slightly higher rates than females. Moreover, studies suggest that lefties tend to outperform right-handed people in fighting sports as well as in some ball games that require hand-eye coordination like tennis, baseball, and volleyball.
However, a big problem with the fighting hypothesis is that its predicted health disadvantage hasn’t been proven in large studies. On the whole, left-handed people don’t seem to suffer from more health problems than right-handed people, nor do they live shorter lives.
Noticing this, three scientists coming from Sweden and the UK proposed an update to the hypothesis. In an article published in the journal Symmetry, they say that right-handed humans actually had a greater fighting advantage over much of our species’ history, which is why they’ve become far more numerous.
According to the researchers, it has something to do with the position of the heart and the idea that humans did most of their fighting with handheld, pointy weapons for much of our species’ existence.
About three-quarters of the heart is situated in the left hemithorax (左胸腔), making the left side of the chest an easy target for a mortal blow. The researchers note that when humans battle with stabbing weapons, the hand used to hold the weapon determines which area of the chest is exposed to an enemy. A left-handed grasp will rotate the left side of the chest to the right, and thus most of the heart toward an enemy, while a right-handed grip will rotate it away. Generally, this means that right-handed humans might be more protected from a deadly strike.
But it should be noted that this new explanation for the predominance of right-handed people is still very much a hypothesis, and yet unproven.
8. Why are most people right-handed according to the previous hypothesis?
A. Because right-handedness has an advantage in the fight.
B. Because lefties tend to underperform in the competition.
C. Because left-handedness poses a threat to the overall health.
D. Because lefties historically competed strongly for resources and mates.
9. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Right-handed people have a higher risk of developing health problems.
B. The researchers have confirmed why most people are right-handed.
C. It’s still under research why most people are right-handed.
D. The position of our heart decides we are right-handed.
10. What will the left-handed grasping weapon possibly lead to?
A. It will protect us from a deadly strike.
B. It will expose most of the heart to an enemy.
C. It will turn the right side of the chest to the left.
D. It will make the upper chest a target for a mortal blow.
11. What is the author’s attitude to the updated fighting hypothesis?
A. Objective. B. Negative. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
C 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据第二段“One of the ideas considered is the fighting hypothesis (假说), which suggests that left-handedness provides an advantage in fight, although with an overall hit to physical health that keeps lefties rare in the population.(其中一个被考虑的观点是“战斗假说”,该假说认为,左撇子在战斗中具有优势,尽管左撇子对身体健康的总体影响使其在人群中非常罕见)”和第三段“However, a big problem with the fighting hypothesis is that its predicted health disadvantage hasn’t been proven in large studies.(然而,战斗假说的一个大问题是,其预测的健康劣势尚未在大型研究中得到证实。)”
根据最后一段“But it should be noted that this new explanation for the predominance of right-handed people is still very much a hypothesis, and yet unproven.(但应该指出的是,这个关于右撇子占优势的新解释在很大程度上仍然是一个假设,尚未得到证实)”可推知,为什么大多数人都是右撇子仍在研究中。
根据倒数第二段“A left-handed grasp will rotate the left side of the chest to the right, and thus most of the heart toward an enemy, while a right-handed grip will rotate it away.(左手抓握会使胸部的左侧向右旋转,从而使心脏的大部分朝向敌人,而右手抓握则会使心脏远离敌人)”可知,左手抓握武器可能会导致它将大部分心脏暴露给敌人。
根据最后一段“But it should be noted that this new explanation for the predominance of right-handed people is still very much a hypothesis, and yet unproven.(但应该指出的是,这个关于右撇子占优势的新解释在很大程度上仍然是一个假设,尚未得到证实)”可推知,作者主要列举了大量的事实,且最后提到假设尚未得到证实,说明作者对更新后的战斗假说的态度是客观的。故选A。
D
On an early winter morning, as roosters crow to greet the dawn, and a wisp of smoke rises above the farmhouse roof, villagers in South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have started a busy day ahead of the Spring Festival.
“We’ve kept a running list of deals and ingredients for the big dinner on New Year’s Eve”, said 32-year-old Pan Zaoxiang in Longji township. Dressed in her holiday best - the traditional clothing of the Yao ethnic group, Pan was born and raised in Dazhai village, located in the core area of the famous tourist attraction of Longji Rice Terraces (梯田).
The village has been named among the Best Tourism Villages of 2022 by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for its breathtaking agricultural view, but Pan said they used to struggle to make ends meet. Surrounded by mountains, Dazhai village was very hard to get to, with only one narrow mud path zigzagging down the hills. Daily necessities and products for farm work could only be delivered by carts. “When I was a child, I longed for the outside world, but that usually took a day and a night to reach the nearest downtown on foot,” said Pan.
Facing the harsh living conditions and the deteriorating ecological environment, the Dazhai villagers turned to the mountains and the massive land cultivated by the elder generations. By cooperating with tourism companies from the tourist city Guilin, villagers became stakeholders (股东) in developing the land into a unique terraced landscape. “My family plants nearly 10,000 mu of rice on the terraced fields, and that means a year-end bonus of over 10,000 yuan,” Pan said.
Villagers like Pan also sniffed out the growing business opportunities in catering and accommodation as more visitors poured in. During this year’s Spring Festival, around 230 homestays across the village are expected to be fully booked, said Yu Qiongtong, Party chief of Dazhai. “I have prepared an abundance of local cuisines and specialties such as sausages, chilies, and sticky rice in bamboo to welcome tourists during the upcoming new year,” Pan said.
Celebrations and various kinds of activities will also be held to present the rich history of the Yao ethnic group. Tourists from home and abroad have great interest not only in the beautiful landscape but the culture, said Pan.
12. What makes Dazhai village the Best Tourism Village of 2022?
A. The mountains. B. The terraced fields. C. The natural scenery. D. The zigzagging mud path.
13. How is Paragraph 5 mainly developed?
A. By following the time order. B. By making comparison.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By giving examples.
14. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Villagers in Dazhai live on agriculture and related businesses.
B. Villagers in Dazhai built a prosperous hometown all on their own.
C. The culture of Dazhai village plays a minor role in attracting tourists.
D. Dazhai village currently has one way of transportation to the outside world.
15. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Dazhai Village Thrives on Tourism. B. Dazhai Village Became Commercialized.
C. Dazhai Villagers Turned into Stakeholders. D. Dazhai Villagers Prepare for the New Year.
B 13. D 14. A 15. A

根据第二段中“Pan was born and raised in Dazhai village, located in the core area of the famous tourist attraction of Longji Rice Terraces (穿着瑶族传统服饰的潘女士出生在 Dazhai,成长在著名的龙脊梯田旅游胜地的核心地带)”和第三段中“The village has been named among the Best Tourism Villages of 2022 by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for its breathtaking agricultural view, but Pan said they used to struggle to make ends meet.(这个村庄因其惊人的农业景观被世界旅游组织(UNWTO)评为2022年最佳旅游村庄,但潘说,他们过去常常很难维持收支平衡)”可知,龙脊梯田让大寨村成为2022年最佳旅游村,故选B。
根据第五段“Villagers like Pan also sniffed out the growing business opportunities in catering and accommodation as more visitors poured in. During this year’s Spring Festival, around 230 homestays across the village are expected to be fully booked, said Yu Qiongtong, Party chief of Dazhai. “I have prepared an abundance of local cuisines and specialties such as sausages, chilies, and sticky rice in bamboo to welcome tourists during the upcoming new year,” Pan said.(随着越来越多的游客涌入,像潘这样的村民也发现了餐饮和住宿业日益增长的商机。大寨市委书记于琼童表示,今年春节期间,全村约有230家民宿预计将被预订一空。潘说:“我准备了丰富的地方菜肴和特色菜,如香肠,辣椒和竹签糯米,欢迎游客在即将到来的新年。”)”可知,第五段列举了村民潘的例子来说明该地旅游业的发展,由此可推知,第五段是通过举例子的方式来展开,故选D。

Career coach Angela Copeland encourages job seekers to think beyond the normal barriers or unspoken rules. “It’s always been my philosophy that you have to think outside the box. ____16____ because then no one is going to know who you are,” says Copeland, author of Breaking The Rules & Getting The Job. The best jobs, she says, go to those who try harder, who are creative and who break the rules in their job search. By challenging yourself to think differently and to take risks, you will be ahead of your peers, she adds.
Copeland offers her top four tips while looking for a job.
Don’t listen to HR about how to apply
The standard line is to apply for a job online. Copeland suggests finding other ways to apply, whether it is in person, via a headhunter or through a friend inside the company. ____17____.
Don’t be afraid of social media
Know that potential employers will Google you and look through your social media profiles. ____18____. But also use social media to meet new people. Many senior executives manage their own accounts online, and it’s good to engage with them when possible.
____19____
Network with people in your industry. Attend events and reach out to people by email or phone. Out of 10 contacts, you may only have three who respond. But one of those could lead you to your new job.
Don’t expect others to train you
If you want to learn a new skill set, figure out how to train yourself. Stay current in your industry by taking the initiative. ____20____
A. Don’t make contact with peers
B. Don’t worry about bothering people
C. Keep them professional and updated
D. You can’t be so worried about following the rules
E. You can’t expect to always get on-the-job training
F. Look into the camera and not at your surroundings
G. Applying in person is often the most effective method
D 17. G 18. C 19. B 20. E
根据上文“It’s always been my philosophy that you have to think outside the box.(你必须跳出固有的思维模式,这一直是我的哲学)”以及后文“because then no one is going to know who you are(因为那样就没人知道你是谁了)”可知,上文提到跳出固有思维模式,故本句承接上文指出不能担心墨守成规,后文说明了原因。
根据上文“The standard line is to apply for a job online. Copeland suggests finding other ways to apply, whether it is in person, via a headhunter or through a friend inside the company.(标准的做法是在网上申请工作。科普兰建议寻找其他方式申请,无论是亲自面试、通过猎头还是通过公司内部的朋友)”可知,本段主要是关于申请的建议,且上文提到了亲自面试,说明建议亲自去申请。故G选项“亲自申请往往是最有效的方法”符合语境,故选G。
【18题详解】
根据上文“Know that potential employers will Google you and look through your social media profiles.(要知道,潜在雇主会在谷歌上搜索你,查看你的社交媒体资料)”以及后文“But also use social media to meet new people. Many senior executives manage their own accounts online, and it’s good to engage with them when possible.(但也要利用社交媒体结识新朋友。许多高级管理人员在网上管理自己的账户,在可能的情况下与他们交流是件好事)”可知,本段主要是关于如何利用社交媒体的建议,上文提到了“潜在雇主会在谷歌上搜索你,查看你的社交媒体资料”,可知本句是在说明如何使社交媒体获得潜在雇主的青睐:保持专业和更新。故C选项“保持专业和更新”符合语境,故选C。
【19题详解】
根据本段内容“Network with people in your industry. Attend events and reach out to people by email or phone. Out of 10 contacts, you may only have three who respond. But one of those could lead you to your new job.(与你所在行业人建立联系。参加活动,通过电子邮件或电话与人联系。在10个联系人中,你可能只有3个回复。但其中之一可能会帮你找到新工作)”可知,本段提到了与你所在行业的人建立联系,结合其他三个小标题格式“Don’t”可推测答案在A、B选项中,A选项“不要和同事联系”与本段和他人联系不符合,故B选项“别担心打扰别人”符合语境,故选B。

【解析】
【详解】考查固定短语和非谓语动词。表示“每年”应用every year;主语“世界各地的人们”为people around the world;表示“为庆祝丰收举办各种各样的活动”翻译为hold various activities to celebrate the harvest,不定式作目的状语;后跟现在分词短语,表示“从游行到吃大餐”翻译为ranging from parades to eating big meals。 Every year, people around the world hold various activities to celebrate the harvest, ranging from parades to eating big meals.
