Over the last decades, we have witnessed an ever-increasing use of electronic devices, leading in turn to electronic waste (e-waste) becoming the world’s fastest growing waste stream. In 2019, a total of 53.6 Mt of e-waste was generated globally, only 17 percent of which is documented as having been managed in an environmentally sound manner, which has been pushing researchers to address the e-waste problem.
Now researchers at the Cellulose & Wood Materials Laboratory have crafted a water-activated disposable (一次性的) battery made of paper and other environmentally friendly materials.
The new paper battery has the same key components as traditional standard batteries. Like a traditional chemical battery, it has a positively charged side called a cathode, a negatively charged side called an anode and a conductive material called an electrolyte between the two. Instead, in the new battery, the anode and cathode are inks printed onto the front and back of a piece of paper. That paper is filled with salt. It will dissolve when you add just a couple of drops of water to the paper. The resulting saltwater solution acts as the electrolyte, which allows electrons to flow. About 20 seconds later, the battery will produce a stable 1.2 volts of electricity until the paper dries out. (For comparison, a standard AA battery provides 1.5 volts.)
The researchers demonstrated that their battery could present a sustainable alternative to the more harmful batteries that are common in low-power devices, such as an alarm clock. Nyström, head of the research, even pictures a bright future where these batteries are applied to diagnostic tests in hospitals and environmental sensors, ideally with other sustainable components such as screens and packaging. “That future may not be so far off.” Nyström said hopefully.
It is hard to predict a time line for producing such items on a large scale, but Nyström says he is in contact with potential industry partners and believes these batteries could make their way into products within the next two to five years.
24.What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A.Electronic devices are overly used.
B.Electronic devices are the main source of waste.
C.Electronic waste has become a global problem.
D.Electronic waste is mostly managed in a sound way.
25.What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.The salt. B.The paper. C.The battery. D.The ink.
26.What do we know about the new paper battery?
A.It has come into the market.
B.It can power common electrical equipment.
C.It has the same anode and cathode as the traditional battery.
D.It stops producing electricity when the saltwater solution dries out.
27.How does Nyström feel about the future of the paper battery?
A.Indifferent. B.Positive. C.Negative. D.Doubtful.
As an only child, Nicole Renae often felt lonely in her youth. But that all changed when she turned ten. For her birthday, Renae’s grandmother surprised her with an adorable gray puppy named Chloe.
From the very start, the two were inseparable. “She was my best friend,” Renae says. But when Renae was 14, her father got a new job that came with devastating news: He’d be working at home, and the house needed to be free of audible noise.
With no easier option, the family sent Chloe to a humane society. Though they were optimistic that the dog would find a new home with people who loved her, they couldn’t know for sure.
In time, Renae grew up, got married, and had a child of her own. Remembering the joy that having a dog had brought her as a kid, Renae wanted her daughter to experience the same. She had it in her mind that she would adopt a puppy, but then one day she saw a post on Facebook about a senior dog that needed a new home. The dog in the photograph looked a lot like Chloe — she was even named Chloe. In an instant it was decided: She would adopt this older dog.
When she met Chloe, Renae was struck with a strange feeling. The dog seemed so familiar. And Chloe appeared to feel the same way about Renae. Chloe reminded Renae so much of her old dog that the emotion overwhelmed her.
“I was crying,” Renae says. “I just knew in my heart that it was her.”
Still, eight years had passed since Renae had seen Chloe last, so the notion (突然的想法) seemed to be little more than wishful thinking.
But her mom realized there was a way to test the theory: Their Chloe had been microchipped as a puppy. They found the ID number, then Renae took her new Chloe to the vet to be scanned. Sure enough, she also had a microchip.
“The numbers were a match,” Renae says. “I felt like I’d won the lottery (彩票).”
28.Why did the family get rid of Chloe when Renae was young?
A.To escape from noises. B.To rehouse the senior dog.
C.To guarantee Renae’s safety. D.To help build the humane society.
29.Why did Renae want to adopt a puppy?
A.To give her daughter pleasure of keeping a pet. B.To strike up a friendship with a pet.
C.To search for her old dog Chloe. D.To remind herself of her Chloe.
30.How did the family confirm Renae’s notion?
A.With a careful health check. B.By matching microchips.
C.By putting the dog to the test. D.By letting their feelings be their guide.
31.What does the author want to do by telling the story?
A.Think highly of lasting friendship.
B.Appeal to people to care for animals.
C.Share a story with a thrilling ending.
D.Show many wrong decisions are hastily taken.
Is there a link between social media and depression? Do Facebook and Instagram have a negative impact on your mental health? It’s complicated.
Sometimes, looking through Instagram just makes you feel bad. You try not to envy your friends, but they always seem to be traveling somewhere cool, eating something fancy, or looking cute in perfect just-rolled-out-of-bed hair. On the other hand, there are times when you laugh at funny memes (表情包), catch up with old friends, and feel happy to belong to fun social media communities. Clearly, social media isn’t all bad.
People are increasingly suspecting that there’re potential problems of social media. Things like cyberbullying (网上欺凌) , screen addiction, and being exposed to endless filtered images (美颜) that make it impossible not to make comparisons between yourself and others often make the news. In July, a big study came out in the journal JAMA titled “Association of Screen Time and Depression in Adolescence.” This big headline seems to confirm what a lot of people have been saying — screen time is horrible for young people.
The study followed over 3,800 adolescents over four years as part of a drug and alcohol prevention program. Part of what the investigators measured was the teens’ amount of screen time, including time spent on social media, as well as their levels of depression symptoms. One of their main findings was that higher amounts of social media use were associated with higher levels of depression. That was true both when the researches compared between people and compared each person against their own mental health over time.
Case closed? Not so fast. Before we end the debate once and for all, let’s take a closer look at this and other studies. Let’s ask ourselves: what exactly is the relationship between social media use and depression? It turns out there are several warnings.
32.Why do people sometimes feel bad when looking through Instagram?
A.They lack contact with old friends. B.They can travel nowhere.
C.They don’t look perfect. D.They feel unbalanced.
33.Why is the article in journal JAMA mentioned?
A.To comment. B.To prove. C.To suggest. D.To explore.
34.Which may agree with the findings of the study?
A.Depression is related to social media use.
B.Teens’ amount of screen time is limited.
C.It is not easy to tell reasons for depression.
D.Social media contributes to physical health.
35.What’s the best title of the text?
A.How to reduce depression? B.Does social media cause depression?
C.Shall people reduce screen time? D.Why is it time to give up social media?

Essential first job tips for graduates
Graduates may be anxious as they enter the workplace. And most bosses won’t teach you how to be a good employee. That is something new workers must learn on their own. 36 .
Speak clearly. Many graduates mumble (嘟哝) or talk too quickly. It is common that people have to ask them to repeat themselves. Perhaps it is because they often speak to their peers who have super sharp hearing. But the customers you encounter in your new job may not. Good verbal communication skills are essential for most jobs. Practice speaking slowly and clearly. 37
Listen carefully. This is an important skill no matter what career you hope to have. 38 When someone is talking, make eye contact to indicate that you are listening. And then ask appropriate questions to make sure you understand the directions or questions.
Don’t interrupt unless it’s urgent. When a co-worker or boss is talking to a customer, don’t cut in unless what you have to share absolutely can’t wait. Use good judgment to determine the urgency of the situation. 39 Say “excuse me”, and then wait to be acknowledged before you start speaking.
40 Some employers have a pretty strict dress code, which takes the decision about what to wear to work. This rule could be quite helpful. Other bosses just tell their workers to “dress appropriately”. Remember, though casual clothing is acceptable to some jobs, make sure your clothes are clean, without rips (裂口) or designs that may upset others.
A.Dress in a proper way.
B.Being polite.
C.If it is urgent, interrupt without judgement.
D.Follow these four essential new job tips for graduates.
E.Avoid shouting, but speak loudly enough to be heard.
F.When it is necessary to interrupt a conversation, do so carefully.
G.It requires being able to pay attention to the information another person is conveying.

【原文】 Everyone has a natural sleep routine. You go to bed and wake up at a certain time. But everyone’s routine is not the same. Some people—the early birds—go to bed early at night (around 9:00 or 10:00 p.m.). In the morning, they wake up easily and are energetic. Others—the night owls—stay awake late (until midnight or later). For them, it is difficult to wake up early. What do we know about early birds and night owls? Here is what studies show. Teenagers are natural night owls. Also, most need nine to ten hours’ sleep a night. But in many places, the school or work day starts at 8:00 a.m. For this reason, only one in five teenagers sleeps enough. More early birds get good grades in school, but night owls do better on some intelligence tests, according to a study of 1,000 Spanish teens. People with high scores on these tests usually get good jobs.
