Chen Wei, a high schl student in Beijing, had his dinner interrupted when he heard smene screaming frm anther table. A fellw diner at the restaurant, Zhang Ta, was chking n sme steak. He was nw hlding his thrat with his face turning red, while his desperate friends were slapping him n the back.
. He gt up and ran t Zhang’s table at nce. With the help f Zhang’s friends, he was able t help Zhang t his feet. Then, standing behind Zhang, Chen did the Heimlich maneuvre. The fd was instantly frced ut, and Zhang began t breathe again. Ten minutes later, an ambulance arrived. The dctrs checked Zhang and made sure that he was fine. They suggested he eat mre slwly and take smaller bites befre they left.

, leaving n time fr an ambulance t arrive. T slve this prblem, in 1974, an American dctr, Henry Heimlich, created the Heimlich maneuvre, saving thusands f lives arund the wrld. Ding the Heimlich maneuvre is quick, practical, and easy. It is s easy, in fact, that almst anyne can learn hw.
A. Chking victims usually have nly abut fur minutes befre they cllapse and smetimes die
.Then, make sure that the victim is really chking: A chking persn cannt speak. Slapping the victim’s back will ften frce ut the bstructin. If this des nt wrk, yu can perfrm the Heimlich maneuvre by standing behind him and wrapping yur arms arund his waist. Make a fist with ne hand and place it in the upper part f his stmach. Grabbing yur fist with yur ther hand tightly, push up and int his stmach in ne mtin. Cntinue ding this until the bstructin is frced ut.
B. If yu see smene chking, first call the emergency services
,as yu may hurt him. Instead, lay the child face dwn n yur lap with the head lwer than the rest his bdy, and then give firm slaps t his upper back until he can breathe again.
E. Ding the Heimlich maneuvre n a small child is nt recmmended
. Yu cannt just stand by and d nthing. Luckily, Chen had learnt hw t give first aid in schl. Seeing Zhang chking, he remained calm and reacted immediately. Chen later said abut the incident, “Hw culd I justify sitting there and ding nthing? We are all humans and we all have a respnsibility t lk after ne anther’s welfare.”
