The Middle Ages (frm the 5th t the 15th century) During the Middle Ages, the purpse f Western art was t teach peple abut Christianity. Thus, artists were nt interested in painting realistic scenes. Their wrks were ften primitive and tw-dimensinal, and the main characters were ften made much larger than everyne else t shw their imprtance. This began t change in the 13th century with Gitt di Bndne (1267–1337). While his paintings still had religius themes, they shwed real peple in a real envirnment. Impressinism (late 19th t early 20th century)The develpment f Western art slwed until the inventin f phtgraphy in the mid-19th century. After that, paintings were n lnger needed t preserve what peple and the wrld lked like. Hence, painters had t find a new way f lking at their art. Frm this, Impressinism emerged in France. The name f this new mvement came frm the painting by Claude Mnet (1840–1926) called Impressin, Sunrise. In this wrk, Mnet’s aim was t cnvey the light and mvement in the scene — the subjective impressin the scene gave him — but nt a detailed recrd f the scene itself.While many Impressinists painted scenes f nature r daily life, thers, such as Renir (1841–1919), fcused n peple. Unlike the cld, black-and-white phtgraphs f that time perid, Renir’s paintings are full f light, shadw, clur, and life. He sught t shw nt just the uter image f his subjects, but their inner warmth and humanity as well.
