Cultural ntesMany peple think that talent is an integral part f the discvery prcess, but it was Thmas Edisn wh said, “Genius is ne percent inspiratin, ninety-nine percent perspiratin,” and reflecting n the many false starts in the inventin f the light bulb, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an inventin with 1,000 steps.” Therefre, a case can be made that great discveries are mre ften the result f effrt than talent, and that the kind f peple wh make great discveries are thse wh wrk harder than thers.
2. Which is mre imprtant fr making a great discvery, talent r effrt?
Mst great discverers are brilliant and hard-wrking. Many are perfectinists wh are unwilling t accept anything but the best.
I think bth talent and effrt are imprtant fr making discveries. If a persn desn’t have sme talent, it is pssible that even thugh he r she wrks hard, it will be difficult t succeed. On the ther hand, peple—even thse with great talent—rarely achieve anything withut putting in effrts.

This year’s Nbel Prize fr Physilgy r Medicine has been awarded t Tu Yuyu (c-winner), whse research led t the discvery f artemisinin, a crucial new treatment fr malaria. Artemisinin has saved hundreds f thusands f lives, and has led t imprved health fr millins f peple. Over 200 millin peple arund the wrld get malaria each year, and abut 600,000 die frm it. Artemisinin has becme a vital part f the treatment fr malaria, and is thught t save 100,000 lives a year in Africa alne.

Tu Yuyu, a cmmitted and patient scientist, was brn in Ningb, China, n 30 December 1930, and graduated frm Peking University Medical Schl in 1955. After she graduated, she wrked at the China Academy f Traditinal Chinese Medicine in Beijing. In 1967, the Chinese gvernment frmed a team f scientists with the bjective f discvering a new treatment fr malaria, and Tu Yuyu was amng the first researchers chsen. In the beginning, Tu Yuyu went t Hainan, where malaria was mre cmmn, t study malaria patients. In 1969, she became the head f the prject in Beijing, and decided t review ancient Chinese medical texts t find traditinal btanical treatments fr the disease. Her team examined ver 2, 000 ld medical texts, and evaluated 280, 000 plants fr their medical prperties. Frm their research, they discvered and tested 380 distinct ancient Chinese medical treatments that shwed prmise in the fight against malaria.

One medical text frm the furth century suggested using the extract frm sweet wrmwd t treat a fever. Tu’s team tested a cllectin f dried wrmwd leaves but fund n effect. They then tried biling fresh wrmwd, and using the liquid btained frm this t treat malaria, but this did nt wrk either. Their prject gt stuck. Hwever, Tu Yuyu wuld nt acknwledge defeat. She analysed the medical texts again, and by chance, she fund ne sentence suggesting a different way t treat the wrmwd. She cncluded that biling the sweet wrmwd apparently destryed its medical prperties. Using a lwer temperature t draw ut the extract, she fund a substance that wrked. After failing mre than 190 times, the team finally succeeded in 1971. Tu Yuyu and her team members even insisted n testing the medicine n themselves t make sure that it was safe. Later, the medicine was tested n malaria patients, mst f whm recvered. This medicine, which was called artemisinin, sn became a standard treatment fr malaria.

Accrding t Tu Yuyu, the discvery f artemisinin was a team effrt. Upn hearing that she had been awarded the Nbel Prize, she said, “The hnur is nt just mine. There is a team behind me, and all the peple f my cuntry. This success prves the great value f traditinal Chinese medicine. It is indeed an hnur fr China’s scientific research and Chinese medicine t be spread arund the wrld.”

Cultural NteMalaria is a disease caused by a parasite knwn as Plasmdium. It gets int human bld thrugh insect bites and is a disease that mst ften ccurs in trpical r subtrpical regins f the wrld. When an infected insect bites a human t feed n his r her bld (usually, this ccurs at night), the Plasmdium parasite enters the bldstream and travels t the liver where it multiplies, and then starts attacking red bld cells. While the disease has a variety f symptms—sme quite severe in nature—the tell-tale symptm mst assciated with the disease is the sudden nset f chills fllwed by a high fever and sweats. The disease culd result in cmas and death, especially amng peple wh are already vulnerable, such as children r pregnant wmen. If left untreated, a persn with malaria may appear t recver frm the disease, but will relapse mnths r even years later. A big issue with treatment and preventin is that in many regins, the parasite has develped a resistance t traditinal treatments, such as quinine r chlrquine. Since WHO (Wrld Health Organisatin) nw fears that the Plasmdium parasite may develp a resistance t artemisinin as well, it recmmends that artemisinin nly be used in cnjunctin with ther drugs t ensure that all f the Plasmdium parasites in a patient are cmpletely killed.

1. Why is the discvery f artemisinin imprtant?
Artemisinin has saved hundreds f thusands f lives and has imprved the health fr millins f peple.
2. What was the key t getting a gd extract frm the wrmwd?
Using a lwer temperature t draw ut the extract.
3. What numbers are mentined in the text? What d they suggest?
200 millin; 600,000; 100,000; 2,000; 280,000; 380; 190These numbers suggest three things: hw big a health prblem malaria is, hw much time Tu Yuyu spent in lking fr a pssible new treatment fr malaria, and hw patient and persistent Tu Yuyu and her team were t tackle the disease.
4. Why is Tu Yuyu cnsidered a great persn?
She is cnsidered a great persn because thrugh her effrts many lives have been saved.
Cmplete the flw chart. Then tell the stry f hw artemisinin was discvered.
