    Best Books for Teens
    The Lovely Bones Alice Sebold
Some may know this story from the 2009 feature film adaptation starring Saoirse Ronan, Stanley Tucci and Susan Sarandon, but The Lovely Bones was first published as a novel seven years earlier. Despite its dark content and hard-hitting (直言不讳的) introduction, it’s a deeply moving story about love, death and acceptance. When 14-year-old Susie Salmon is cruelly attacked and killed by her neighbour, she becomes a ghost and watches over her family, friends and even strangers trying to make peace with her untimely death.
    Noughts & Crosses Malorie Blackman
It’s hard to believe that Malorie Blackman’s famous book is nearly twenty years old. Noughts &Crosses has had a theatre run and aired on the BBC last year. An honest look at the ups and downs of being a teenager, Girls in Love openly discusses loss, love and everything in between. The beauty of this story lies in the strong sisterhood of these three unique characters. Their adventures continue in Girls under Pressure, Girls out Late and Girls in Tears.
    The Colour Purple Alice Walker
Set in the Southern United States of the 1930s, the story follows Celie, a 14-year-old black girl living in poverty (贫困), separated from her sister and suffering abuse at the hands of her father. But when the jazz singer Shug Avery comes to stay, Celie discovers friendship, love, faith and more importantly, strength.

Last year, more than 130 million tons of single-use plastics were thrown away. Now, a new report finds that just 20 companies produced more than half of all single-use plastic waste worldwide.
The report, published Tuesday by Australia’s Mindoro Foundation, offers one of the fullest accounting of the companies behind the production of single-use plastics that researchers believe could account for as much as 10% of global greenhouse emissions by 2050. The study has further identified 20 companies as the source of 55% of the world’s single-use plastic waste in 2020, while the top 100 companies account for more than 90%.
The report also has studied the money invested (投资) in the production of single-use plastics. It finds that 20 biggest investors hold shares worth close to $ 300 billion in the single-use plastic producers. The top three investors are US-based Vanguard Group, Black Rock and Capital Group, which according to the report have an estimated $ 6 billion invested in the production of single-use plastics.
Since most plastic is made from oil and gas, the production and consumption of plastic is becoming a significant driver of the climate crisis. The report warns that in the next five years, the global capacity to produce the materials needed for single-use plastics could grow by more than 30%. And much of the resulting single-use plastic waste will end up as pollution in developing countries with poor plastic waste management systems, according to the report.
Solving the issue will require serious changes from producers, investors and banks, the authors write. The report says that producers of polymers—known as the building blocks of plastics—should begin disclosing their single-use plastic waste “footprint”, while banks and investors should entirely stop their financing, in stages, that goes toward the production of single-use plastics. In addition, search for more environment-friendly materials should be encouraged.
24.How much single-use plastic waste was produced by the top 20 companies in 2020?
    A.About 13 million tons. B.About 65 million tons.
    C.About 71.5 million tons. D.About 117 million tons.
25.Where are the top three investors from?
    A.China. B.The UK. C.Australia. D.The US.
26.What does the fourth paragraph focus on?
A.The causes of the global warming.
B.The potential harmful effects of plastic.
C.The materials used to produce plastic.
D.The fast growth of the plastic waste.
27.Which measure is mentioned to reduce the plastic waste?
A.Plastic producers should pay for the waste.
B.Plastic waste can be exported to poor countries.
C.The production of single-use plastics should be stopped now.
D.More efforts are needed to replace plastics with other materials.

Scientists have discovered a bit of hand-made string (线绳) that’s around 50,000 years old in Neanderthal remains. The first Neanderthal remains were found in the Neander Valley in Germany, which is where the name comes from. Neanderthals may have lived mainly in caves and made stone tools, but recent discoveries have given hints that Neanderthals developed some advanced skills that people used to think impossible. For example, Neanderthals knew how to make glue from the bark (树皮) of a tree.
Now, scientists report they’ve found a piece of string on a stone tool made by Neanderthals. Before this, the oldest known piece of string was one made by humans about 19,000 years ago. The string is about a quarter of an inch long. Almost all things made from plants during that time have broken down and disappeared, so it’s very special to find this bit of string.
The scientists don’t know whether the string was attached to the tool. But that doesn’t interest them as much as the fact that Neanderthals knew how to make string. Bruce Hardy, the lead scientist on the project, says that knowing how to make string was meaningful for humans. “We wouldn’t really be here today without that technology,” he says.
Making string is a very arduous process. This string was made from the inside bark of an evergreen tree. To make string that is strong enough, the string must be made of several smaller fibers twisted (缠绕) together in a special way. For the Neanderthal string, several fibers needed to be twisted together into something like yarn. Then three pieces of yam needed to be twisted together in the opposite direction to make the final string.
The scientists Aren’t sure what the string was used for, but they say that string like. the bit that was found could be used to make bags, baskets, traps, or other things. The researchers also suggest that because Neanderthals needed to make pairs and count fibers to make the string, the bit of string may also tell us something about the kinds of math that Neanderthals could do.
28.What can we know about Neanderthals?
A.They were named after a nation.
B.They didn’t know how to make tools.
C.They were not as smart as scientists thought.
D.They may master more skills than people realized.
29.What is special about the string?
    A.It is surprisingly long.
    B.It was made from wood.
    C.It survives a long history.
D.It was attached to a stone tool.
30.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.Neanderthals strengthened stone tools with the string.
B.The scientists think the string is part of the stone tool.
C.The string-making skill is of great importance to humans.
D.Neanderthals had great difficulty in inventing the string.
31.What does the underlined word “arduous” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A.Difficult. B.Normal.
    C.Creative. D.Boring.
    D
Your mobile phone vibrates in your pocket. ‘Need to see you,’ reads the screen. Nothing new, considering that texting is currently the most common form of long-distance communication. But how were messages conveyed in the past?
One of the first methods was the smoke signal. This practice was used by Chinese soldiers guarding the Great Wall to warn of the enemy’s approach. The Greeks invented a whole alphabet of smoke signals for sending messages. But it was Native Americans who made the system mobile by carrying small bunches of dried grasses around with them. These could be lit quickly from any place at any time.
Moving on to messages transmitted by sound, an early technique was the drum. Drums are still used today in the rainforests of Africa, Papua New Guinea and Central and South America for broadcasting news. The instrument is made from a piece of wood, which is empty inside, and this is hit with a stick. On receiving the message, each village passes it on to the next, which means that news can travel at up to 150 km an hour.
In some parts of the world, humans are able to convey messages over long distances without using instruments. On La Gomera, one of the Canary Islands, people use Silbo, or the ‘whistling language’ to communicate across the valleys. The language involves the use of the tongue, lips and hands to make sounds, which can travel up to 5 km. To ensure its continuation, Silbo is currently a compulsory subject in primary and secondary schools on the island.
A look at long-distance communication would not be complete without mentioning the art of yodelling. This is a form of singing, in which the voice changes sound levels very quickly, making it easily heard over long distances. It is believed that the technique was developed in the Swiss Alps, but it is also found in other places such as Central Africa. At one time, yodelling was popular in theatres and music halls, but this is no longer so.
32.What was most remarkable about the Greeks’ system of smoke signals?
    A.It could communicate words.
    B.It could be used instantly.
    C.It could mislead the enemy.
D.It could stop wars from breaking out.
33.What is the advantage of communicating by drums?
    A.The length of the message.
    B.The simplicity of the instrument.
    C.The speed of the transmission.
    D.The volume of the sound.
34.What would be an accurate definition of ‘yodelling’?
A.Moving frequently between high and low notes.
B.Singing a recognizable tune in harmony.
C.Using music with a really strong beat.
    D.Shouting in a loud voice.
35.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
    A.Is That Strange?
    B.Get the Message?
    C.The Old Technology
    D.The History of Information

Rain is pouring down today, which brings back sweet memories of our dog, Bambi. She-joined our family at the age of four months. Like all puppies, she was full of energy and wonder. Our boys described excitedly that she looked just like the young deer, Bambi, in the movie they had watched recently. The name fitted her personality perfectly.
Bambi also had all the fine physical characteristics of the German Shepherd. She was strong, yet gentle and shy. We were a young family with two growing, energetic boys, so she fitted right in with our lifestyle. Bambi loved the boys. She would play with them until they were completely tired.
When Bambi was almost two years old, a full-grown dog, she became quite protective of us. She never failed to watch the boys. If any stranger entered our yard, she’d watch him or her with sharp eyes and let out a low bark. Even though Bambi had this protective instinct (本能), she never hurt anyone. Nevertheless, she did manage to frighten (惊吓) away many welcome and unwelcome guests.
On one occasion, I had called a repairman to come to our home to fix the refrigerator. I was at work, and the boys were home with the babysitter. I told the repairman by phone that we had a dog, but it would be safe to enter the house because the babysitter would be there to meet him. However, when the repairman arrived, the babysitter and boys went outside. As he went close to our front door, Bambi was outside and she barked at him while she guarded the door. As long as the man attempted to move, Bambi would jump up and bark more fiercely (凶猛地). This man had never seen such a fierce dog before and was frightened too much. He had no idea whether to go away or scream for help.
    Paragraph 1:
Luckily, the babysitter and boys returned from their walk at that lime.

Though Bambi was so brave, there, was a side to her personality that didn’t match her.

M: Minerva Public Library staff look forward to seeing students again this fall, and are happy to help them find library materials for schoolwork or for their own enjoyment. However, during COVID-19, there are new library rules to help ensure the safety of library staff, adult readers, and students. All students are required to wear masks while in the library, and food and drinks are not permitted. Seating is very limited and, in order to maintain social distancing, students are not allowed to sit on the floor in public areas of the building. Library occupancy is limited and, once that limit is reached, additional readers can’t come into the building. Because of these limitations, the library can’t be an after-school student hangout or a waiting room for rides, and parents should make other arrangements for their children. The library appreciates the cooperation of parents, caregivers, and students in following these rules to keep the library a safe and welcoming place for all readers.
    21.C 22.B 23.C
根据首段首句“Some may know this story from the 2009 feature film adaptation starring Saoirse Ronan, Stanley Tucci and Susan Sarandon, but The Lovely Bones was first published as a novel seven years earlier. (有些人可能从2009年西尔莎·罗南、斯坦利·图奇和苏珊·萨兰登主演的改编电影中知道这个故事,但《可爱的骨头》早在7年前就以小说的形式出版了)”可知,《可爱的骨头》是2009年被拍了电影,但是小说是7年前出版的。所以,《可爱的骨头》是在2002年出版。故选C。
22.细节理解题。根据末段末句“But when the jazz singer Shug Avery comes to stay, Celie discovers friendship, love, faith and more importantly, strength. (但当爵士歌手Shug Avery来到这里时,Celie发现了友谊,爱情,信仰,更重要的是,力量)”可知,Celie有了力量是因为爵士歌手Shug Avery。故选B。
23.推理判断题。根据第三段最后三句“An honest look at the ups and downs of being a teenager, Girls in Love openly discusses loss, love and everything in between. The beauty of this story lies in the strong sisterhood of these three unique characters. Their adventures continue in Girls under Pressure, Girls out Late and Girls in Tears.(《恋爱中的女孩》诚实地审视了青少年的起起落落,公开地讨论了失去、爱以及两者之间的一切。这个故事的美妙之处在于这三个独特的人物之间强烈的姐妹情谊。她们的冒险经历在《压力下的女孩》、《迟到的女孩》和《流泪的女孩》中继续着)”可知,《恋爱中的女孩》中三个独特的人物的冒险经历在《压力下的女孩》、《迟到的女孩》和《流泪的女孩》中继续着。可推知,《恋爱中的女孩》讲述了一个未完成的故事。故选C。
    24.C 25.D 26.B 27.D
24.细节理解题。根据第一段的“Last year, more than 130 million tons of single-use plastics were thrown away.(去年,超过1.3亿吨一次性塑料被丢弃)”和第二段的“The study has further identified 20 companies as the source of 55% of the world’s single-use plastic waste in 2020, while the top 100 companies account for more than 90%.(该研究进一步确定了20家公司是2020年全球55%一次性塑料垃圾的来源,而排名前100的公司占90%以上)”可知,去年超过1.3亿吨一次性塑料被丢弃,而排名前20的占了55%,即约71.5(130*55%)万吨。故选C.
根据第三段的“The top three investors are US-based Vanguard Group, Black Rock and Capital Group(排名前三的投资者是总部位于美国的Vanguard Group、Black Rock和Capital Group)”可知,一次性塑料的投资者主要来自美国。故选D。
根据第四段“Since most plastic is made from oil and gas, the production and consumption of plastic is becoming a significant driver of the climate crisis. The report warns that in the next five years, the global capacity to produce the materials needed for single-use plastics could grow by more than 30%. And much of the resulting single-use plastic waste will end up as pollution in developing countries with poor plastic waste management systems, according to the report.(由于大多数塑料是由石油和天然气制成的,塑料的生产和消费正成为气候危机的重要驱动因素。
    28.D 29.C 30.C 31.A
根据最后一段中“Neanderthals may have lived mainly in caves and made stone tools, but recent discoveries have given hints that Neanderthals developed some advanced skills that people used to think impossible. (尼安德特人可能主要生活在洞穴里,制造石器,但最近的发现暗示,尼安德特人掌握了一些人们过去认为不可能的高级技能。)”可知,尼安德特人掌握的技能可能比人们认识到的要多。故选D项。
29.细节理解题。通读全文,根据第一段中“Scientists have discovered a bit of hand-made string (线绳) that’s around 50,000 years old in Neanderthal remains. (科学家们在尼安德特人的遗骸中发现了一根手工制作的线绳,距今约5万年。)”和第二段中“(现在,科学家们报告说,他们在尼安德特人制造的石器上发现了一根绳子。在此之前,已知最古老的绳子是人类在大约19000年前制造的。这根绳子大约四分之一英寸长。)”及第四段中“This string was made from the inside bark of an evergreen tree. (这根绳子是用常青树的树皮做成的。)”等内容可知,线绳的历史悠久。其它选项均不正确,故选C项。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Bruce Hardy, the lead scientist on the project, says that knowing how to make string was meaningful for humans. ‘We wouldn’t really be here today without that technology,’ he says. (该项目的首席科学家Bruce Hardy说,知道如何制造绳子对人类来说意义重大。他说:‘如果没有这项技术,我们就不会有今天。’)”可知,制作线绳的技术对人类非常重要。故选C项。
31.词句猜测题。划线词句后文“To make string that is strong enough, the string must be made of several smaller fibers twisted (缠绕) together in a special way. For the Neanderthal string, several fibers needed to be twisted together into something like yarn. Then three pieces of yam needed to be twisted together in the opposite direction to make the final string. (为了使线绳足够结实,线绳必须由几根更小的纤维以一种特殊的方式缠绕在一起。对于尼安德特人的线绳来说,需要将几根纤维绞在一起,形成类似纱线的东西。然后,三条山药藤需要以相反的方向拧在一起,形成最后一根绳子。)”说明对于尼安德特人说,制作线绳非常不易,从而推知划线词句“Making string is a very arduous process. (制作绳子是一个非常arduous过程。)”其中划线词汇意思是“困难的”。故选A项。
    32.A 33.C 34.A 35.B
The Greeks invented a whole alphabet of smoke signals for sending messages.(希腊人发明了一整套用于发送信息的烟雾信号字母表。)
On receiving the message, each village passes it on to the next, which means that news can travel at up to 150 km an hour.(每一个村庄收到这条信息后,就会把它传递给下一个村庄,这意味着消息可以以每小时150公里的速度传播。)
This is a form of singing, in which the voice changes sound levels very quickly, making it easily heard over long distances. A look at long-distance communication would not be complete without mentioning the art of yodelling.
But how were messages conveyed in the past?
    36.F 37.A 38.D 39.C 40.E
36.根据后句“The following simple tips will help keep the garden in perfect condition.(下面这些简单的小窍门可以帮助你保持花园的完美状态。)”
37.根据后句“It is important to remember that we cannot stop watering the garden, always in the coolest hours of the day. (重要的是要记住,我们不能停止给花园浇水,总是在一天中最凉爽的时候。)”句中的“watering”与选择项中的“water”保持一致,可知,这里谈论给花园浇水。所以A选项“定期给花园浇水。”符合上下文语境,故选A。
38.根据前句“It is also important to take care of the lawn and the best way of protection is to cut it regularly, as this will remain healthy and attractive and avoid being annoying. (照顾好草坪也很重要,最好的保护方式就是定期修剪草坪,这样既能保持健康,又能吸引人,而且不会惹人讨厌。)”句中的“cut it”与选择项中的“cut it”保持一致,可知,这里谈论草坪修剪。所以D选项“然而,我们不应该剪得太多,因为它会变得脆弱。”符合上下文语境,故选D。
39.根据后前句“In these cases it is advisable to use insecticides or other products in the last hours of the afternoon. (在这种情况下,建议在下午最后几个小时使用杀虫剂或其他产品。)”根据常识可知,杀虫剂用过多,会烧伤植物。所以C选项“记住不要过度使用,以免烧伤它们。”符合上下文语境,故选C。
40.根据本段首句“And what about the furniture in our gardens? We must take into account some tips to protect them. (那我们花园里的家具呢? 我们必须考虑一些保护它们的建议。)”后句“The following simple tips will help keep the garden in perfect condition.(下面这些简单的小窍门可以帮助你保持花园的完美状态。)”

66.My favorite corner in the school
Our school has a lot of corners where students like to hang out, such as the playground, computer rooms and the art room. My favorite corner is the library.
In the library, people know how to restrict themselves and behave more politely, and it is a good place for students to read plenty of novels and study their own subjects. I am used to staying in the library after school, because I enjoy its quiet atmosphere and it’s helpful when I do my homework. It is also a good place to meet some friends who have something in common with me, and we can share experience in different subjects.
    67.Paragraph 1:
Luckily, the babysitter and boys returned from their walk at that time. They rescued the poor frightened repairman from our guard dog. They told Bambi that it was okay to allow the man to enter our home. But Bambi seemed still couldn’t trust this stranger. While the repairman was busy in the kitchen, she kept a watchful eye on him, which made the man very nervous. When he finished his work, he was very glad to go back. This story is always mentioned whenever we talk about Bambi.
    Paragraph 2:
Though Bambi was so brave, there was a side to her personality that didn’t match her. She was  terrified of thunder and lightning. On any summer day when the sun disappeared behind the clouds, Bambi would race to the door and demand to stay inside. She seemed to have the ability to feel the coming of rain. Usually, she was correct because rain, thunder and lightning would soon follow. Though Bambi was no longer with us, our wonderful memories of her remain to brighten rainy days.
