My roommate Lily was well organized, while I was not. Each of her things had its place, but mine were always hidden somewhere. She even labeled everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Lily got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Lily came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming.“Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!" Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Lily answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so lost in my work that I even didn't notice Lily had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression a kind of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me,"Thanks."
Lily and I stayed roommates for the rest of the college years. We didn't always agree, but we learned.

In a new study, researchers analyzed information from more than 18,000 people who provided blood samples. Participants reported whether they exercised regularly, and if so, what type of exercises they typically did. The researchers then scanned participants' blood, looking for genes that are tied to an increased risk of obesity (肥胖). Next, the researchers examined whether certain exercises seemed to balance this risk.
Overall, people who reported doing any type of regular exercises tended to have a lower BMI (体重指数) than those who didn't. This was true even among people who were genetically easy to become overweight. But one exercise stood out as the one with the strongest anti-obesity effect: jogging. Participants with obesity genes who jogged tended to have a lower BMI than people with similar genetic risk who did not jog.
But for those who loathe jogging, don't fear. Five other types of exercises were also tied to a lower BMI among individuals at risk for obesity. These included mountain climbing, ballroom dancing and walking. The benefits of these exercises were the biggest among those with the greatest genetic risk of obesity.
Interestingly, several other types of exercises failed to counteract the genetic risk of obesity. These included cycling, stretching exercises and swimming. The findings don't mean that these latter exercises can't help with weight control. It's just that they didn't seem to counteract the genetic tendency to gain weight.
There could be several reasons for this. The researchers noted that, for the average Joe or Jane, cycling and stretching exercises tend to require less energy than the exercises that were tied to a lower obesity risk. In addition, exercising in water, as happens with swimming, may increase appetite.
28.What does the underlined word "loathe"in the third paragraph mean?
A. Display. B.Dislike. C.Disturb. D.Discourage
29.Which exercise has the least effect on balancing obesity genes?
A.Mountain climbing. B.Ballroom dancing
C.Running slowly. D.Riding a bicycle.
30.What does the author indicate in the last paragraph?
A.Swimming doesn't help one lose weight.
B. Diving may make a person eat more food.
C. Average people put less energy into exercises.
D.Stretching exercises will become popular.
31.Which of the following is the best title?
A.Jogging Less Leads to Genetic Obesity
B. Regular Exercises Tend to Lower BMI
C.Whether Exercises Balance Risks of Obesity Genes
D.Genes Are Very Important for People's Weight Control
D
Feeling overwhelmed(被淹没的) by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy, but a new study released last week suggests that more free time will not actually make people as happy as they commonly believe it will.
The researchers collected data from two large scale surveys, which included more than 35,000 replies. They found that people with up to two hours of free time a day generally had higher levels of well-being than those with less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse.
So the free-time "sweet spot"might be two to three hours per day, the findings suggest. "While being too busy can cause stress, having more time is not always better," said Marissa Sharif, an assistant professor at The Wharton School, in a press release.
Experts note, for example, that some adults struggle with the "retirement blues,"which can be due to a lack of stimulation(刺激) and structure, among other things. The "sweet spot" seems to have something to do with how people spend the extra time they have, the researchers behind the new study argue
They conducted several smaller online experiments. In one they asked participants to imagine having three to seven free hours per day, and to imagine spending that time doing "productive" things(like exercising) or to imagine doing "unproductive" activities (like watching TV). The participants believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day—but only if they used it unproductively.
Though that experiment was based on imagination, which is one limitation of the new research, it's certainly in line with other researches showing that being in a state of "flow"can be good for people's mental health. In other words, how people use their free time matters.
"In cases when people do find themselves with excessive amounts of spare time, such as retirement or having left a job,"Sharif said,"our results suggest these individuals would benefit from spending their newfound time with purpose."
32.What's the common belief about "free time"?
A.Less free time will make life full.
B.Too much free time will make one feel worse.
C. One is happy in his free time whatever he does.
D.More free time will bring people much happiness.
33.Why do some adults suffer from"retirement blues"?
A. Because they are not used to retirement life.
B.Because their life lacks care and warmth.
C.Because they find life is dull with too much free time.
D. Because they find it struggling to deal with daily life.
34. What's the limitation mentioned of the new study?
A.The experiment is imagined. B.The study doesn't agree with the others.
C. The number of participants is small. D.The study lacks data from participants.
35.Which one will probably benefit from their free time?
A.Mrs. Wang, retired, spends over six hours watching TV.
B.Alex, a salesman, does one hour's reading and another hour's jogging.
C.Mr. Yang, a 996 programmer, struggles to find an hour to tutor his son.
D.Catherine, a stay-at-home mom, kills her free time purposelessly.

One Possible version:
Dear Chris,
Learning that you feel greatly stressed from your study, I'm writing to convey my concern and offer you some suggestions.
To begin with, you must have the confidence to overcome the problems. Of equal importance is that you ought to transform the pressure into your motivation to strive. It's the fighting process rather than the results that counts. Last but not least, turn to your parents and teachers for help if necessary, who can help you relieve your pressure because they may have experienced such situations when they were students.
I'd appreciate it if you could take these suggestions into account. Hopefully, they will be helpful for you. Looking forward to receiving your good news.
Yours, Li Hua

However, to his great surprise, his mom didn't blame him too much."If you have any problem, you can tell us directly. Remember telling lies is not a good way." she said softly, patting him on the shoulder gently. Hearing what she said, Jay raised his head and began to describe the difficulties in math in detail. Text 10
Weather affects all of us in one way or another, directly or indirectly. For example, good weather makes people happy. Bad weather makes people sick and sad. Besides, on a fine day, people can go out for a walk or play a game outside. On a rainy day, however, people can only stay indoors. The first thing that many people do after getting up is to see what the weather is like. With knowledge of the weather, one can arrange work and life of the day. If it is fine, he may decide to go on a picnic. If it is cloudy, he will have to take a raincoat or an umbrella with him when he is leaving the house. Whatever the weather may be, one tends to adjust his activities to it. In order to know what the weather will be, special people are hired to provide this information. They collect data, analyze them and predict the weather of the coming day. This information, which is announced on the radio or on TV, is usually right. Thanks to the efforts of those people, we can always know the weather in advance and get prepared for it.
