It has been four years since the Flashfood App was set to hit Canadian grocery stores and make it easier for shoppers to buy soon-to-expiry (保质期) food at a discount. Much to my delight, I heard it advertised recently on a radio station and figured it’s time for an update, especially since people became more aware of food waste’s role in the climate crisis.
The first thing I did was download the App. I hadn’t done it before because it was limited to a few locations, but now it’s all over Canada. I could see immediately that many brands of yogurt are all marked down 50 percent. Users pay for the food using the App, and then pick it up at a marked location in the store. There is no need for you to worry about them actually being bad.
It makes sense for retailers(零售商) to get behind this App because it offers a win-win situation for everyone involved. Flashfood sells 75% of the products made available through its App while saving consumers an average of 50% on those grocery items, and it has 300 000 active users right now. That number is expected to grow naturally as Flashfood partners with more grocers.
“As a food retailer, we are in the business of providing food, not wasting it. The Flashfood program allows us to provide our customers with a convenient and environmentally sustainable (可持续的) way to purchase food. Loblaw sells 77% of the items it puts on Flashfood, moving an average of $800 to $1000 worth of goods weekly at each of its largest stores,” said Gord Chem, senior VP with Loblaw’s Real Canadian Superstores.
I love looking for discount deals at the grocery store and always keep an eye out for the hot pink clearance stickers. But it’s always random, and I never know what I’m going to get from week to week. The appeal of Flashfood is that I can see what’s available, pre-purchase it, and leave it off my shopping list.
24.What can we know about the food on the Flashfood?
A.It’s delivered directly to the customers. B.Users can pay for it in the marked store.
C.Much of it is charged at half the price. D.It’ll be a month away before it goes bad.
25.According to Gord Chem, the Flashfood is ________.
A.impractical B.doubtful
C.creative D.beneficial
26.How is the advantage of Flashfood introduced in the last paragraph?
A.By making a comparison. B.By listing some examples.
C.By explaining the cause. D.By introducing the result.
27.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Customers can buy much cheaper food on a recent app.
B.Canadians have a smart approach to reducing food waste.
C.A win-win situation has been set for Canadians involved.
D.Canadians adopt a new way of protecting the environment.
C
One day in summer, as Terry passed through the crossroads, a truck ran a red light, crashing into his car violently, throwing him out of his seat belt and sending him flying five meters through the air. Within minutes, Terry’s unconscious body was picked up by the medical workers at the side of the road. Noticing his skin had taken on a deep blue color — indicating a lack of oxygen — the medical workers put a pipe down Terry’s throat, and he was rushed to nearby Oshawa General Hospital. “ By the time Terry came in, we were ready and waiting for him, ” said Marianne Timmermans, one of the nurses who initially worked on him. He was in severe condition.
Moments later, police arrived with the news. Lorraine, Terry’s wife, remembered seeing him in the Intensive Care Unit for the first time after the accident. There was nothing but ma-chines all over him. He wasn’t a pretty sight. He lay deep in a coma (昏迷). But Terry’s powers of recovery were as unbelievable as his injuries seemed to be. Three weeks after being thrown from his vehicle, he came out of his coma. Although he was by all appearances intact, Terry would soon reveal an injury far more severe than whatever damage had been done to his body.
When Terry awoke from his coma, he had been all but reduced to the level of a child. Everything from his ability to talk and walk to his understanding of what it meant to be a husband and a father seemed gone. Much as Terry had a problem, he never gave up and he also had the support of his family, marked by small victories and a renewed bond between him and his three daughters when they taught him how to play football again.
It has taken years to rebuild his shattered life, but today, more than 20 years since his playing days, Terry is a highly popular motivational speaker. He tells his story of perseverance and courage and family’s support in his presentation Seize Each Day.
28.Why did the car accident happen?
A.Terry drove his car too fast. B.Terry didn’t fasten his seat belt.
C.The truck driver didn’t obey the traffic law. D.The driver lost control of his truck.
29.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Lorraine’s care for Terry. B.The police’s response to the accident.
C.Terry’s health progress after the accident. D.Terry’s effort to recover from injuries.
30.What can we learn about Terry now from the text?
A.He has lost the ability of talking and walking.
B.He owes success to his family and his determination.
C.He finds it hard to get along well with his daughters.
D.He don’t bear the responsibilities of husband and father.
31.What does the text mainly intend to tell us?
A.An inspiring story. B.A successful father.
C.A harmonious family. D.An extraordinary accident.

Your child is unique, but what all children have in common is natural curiosity and an ability to learn they are born with. Our brains are active all the time, and a baby’s brain is the busiest of all. Research has shown that babies begin to understand language about twice as fast as they actually speak it. By showing children other languages at an early age, you are giving them the opportunity to make use of their natural ability to hear and recognize between the sounds of other languages, and their ability to make sense of what they are hearing.
Communication is something that children do to help them achieve something else, and they are unaware of the large amount of learning taking place. They take everything in through their senses, making connections between what they hear, see, smell, taste and touch. As long as we provide the right conditions, their learning and development will take place in a natural way.
In your child’s early years, the emotional environment is just as important as the physical environment. Children learn when they feel safe, happy, valued and listened to. This is central to any learning experience in a child’s early years, including learning an additional language. Your child has a trial-and-error approach to its development, and making mistakes is a valuable part of the learning process. When children learn an additional language at an early age, they get the benefits of experimenting with that language as a natural part of their development. Their progress isn’t prevented by a fear of getting it wrong, and very young children are simply working their way towards getting it right.
The long-term benefits of learning another language go beyond being able to communicate with others. Studies suggest that children learning an additional language tend to score better on standardized tests because learning languages develops listening, observation, problem-solving and critical (批判性的) thinking skills. These are skills that are of life-long benefit, both personally and professionally. Encouraging in children a love of language at an early age prepares them well for school and for life.
32.What do we know about Children according to Paragraph 1?
A.Children are busy playing.
B.Children are born to speak.
C.Children are good at speaking native language.
D.Children have a better ability to learn other languages.
33.While learning a language, children __________.
A.speak to themselves B.need to have language classes
C.make use of their different senses D.notice how much they have learned
34.Children learn when they __________.
A.are in bad emotion B.do not make mistakes
C.learn from their mistakes D.are taught by their teachers
35.In fact learning another language helps children to _________.
A.take more tests
B.have a good time
C.encourage themselves
D.develop life-long skills
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
根据下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How we garden
Some of us are challenged when it comes to gardening. We sometimes worry too much about what other people think about our gardens. The most important thing to remember when you’re creating your own garden is that it really needs to be about you. 36
That said, the best gardens work well with their surrounding environment. For instance, you might want to create a tropical (热带) feel but if you’ve got next-door’s oak tree (橡树) as the major background then it could look slightly odd. 37 If your garden is north-facing and you use black or grey-colored material, everything could become dark and depressing.
When it comes to planting, there are a lot of great influences out there. You might like the work of designers such as Piet Oudolf. But it’s good to remember that these influences are best used as a guide. 38 If you want to use ideas from other garden designers, then look for one that you’re comfortable with but don’t try to copy it outright—just be inspired by them.
39 I always think that if you’ve got fewer materials then the plants can sing better. For me, the plants are always at the heart of the garden. If you want them to stand out, keep your materials to as small a number as possible.
It’s the same when we select plants. We often forget that we don’t need a garden full of stars; we also need plants that provide the support act. 40 They often bring a more subtle element to the design.
A.A straight copy is never going to work, is it?
B.Grasses are a great example of this sort of secondary role.
C.All of these considerations will really help you set the tone.
D.You shouldn’t concern yourself with what anyone else thinks.
E.The direction your garden faces will also affect the overall look.
F.In the use of different materials in your garden design, less is definitely more.
G.If you want to keep bugs away from your plants, you can spray pesticide regularly.

I remember being happy for my friend Avery when she won the baseball championship we’d both competed in. But I was embarrassed to admit I also envied her! When my friend Avery and I tried out for Alice in Wonderland (《爱丽丝梦游仙境》), though, things went the opposite way.
“I really hope I get picked to be Alice,” said Avery.
“You’d make a great Alice!” I said. “I don’t care what part I get as long as I’m in it.”
“So you’d be happy to have a small part like the Dormouse?” she asked.
“Exactly!” I said. ”Or even the Cheshire Cat would be good.”
A few days later, Avery and I raced over to the theater office, where the director had posted the cast list (演员表).
“Wow!” said Avery. “You got the part of Alice and I got the part of the March Hare.”
“That can’t be right,” I said. “There must be some mistake!”
But I really and truly was given the part of Alice. I was pretty sure the reason I’d done well is because I hadn’t been nervous at all during the audition (试演). And the reason I hadn’t been nervous was because it hadn’t even occurred to me that I could get the major role.
“Do you want to come over after school and we can practice our lines (台词)?” I asked.
“You mean to practice your lines?” Avery said, not even looking at me. “No thanks. I’m pretty busy this week.”
“OK,” I said. “How about some day next week?”
“Sorry,” she mumbled. “I’m pretty sure I’m busy forever.”

Thank you so much for all your care about the English Corner. So far so good!
Work on it is progressing steadily. We've fixed the regular time, place and relevant activities. And the poster you recommended does work! Up to now, as many as 50 students have signed up for it. We, as scheduled, are to organize the first activity next week.
The English Corner has formed. We expect, with your guidance, it will be a great success, further stimulating our interest in English.
Yours,

67.That night at dinner, my parents congratulated me for getting the lead role. “Well, I’m really confused, “I said. “Avery was so upset because I was picked to be Alice. She pretty much threw away our friendship.” “Hmm,” said my mom, “sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious and don’t know how to act. She just needs a little time and understanding.”
Over the next week, I did my best to give Avery some space. Then at rehearsal one day, I went up to her, “I know you didn’t exactly love the idea of being the March Hare, but you’re such a talented actor, and the way you say your lines is so awesome.” I smiled. “Thanks,” said Avery. “Well,” I said, “I’m still struggling with a few things about my character. I’d love your help if you have any free time.” “I think I might be free on Thursday.” She smiled. Our play ended up going great. Even though things were rough for a little while with Avery and me, we’re better than ever now!
