The old residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely.
The project was dreamed up by a local charity(慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve old people’s wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed. It’s good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.”
There are now 700 old people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide.
Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: “Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.”
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: “We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities.”

Race walking (竞走) shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely leading to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing (摆动) and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. Race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories (卡路里) hour, which is almost twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking doesn’t do as much harm to the body as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult (咨询) a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
8.Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
    A.They must run long distances.
B.They must compete in the marathon.
C.They have to follow special rules.
D.They are good at swinging their legs.
9.What advantage does race walking have over running?
A.It’s more popular at the Olympics.
    B.It’s less challenging physically.
C.It’s more effective in body building.
D.It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
10.What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking?
    A.Getting experts’ opinions.
    B.Having a medical checkup.
    C.Hiring an experienced coach.
    D.Doing regular exercises.

Sharon Holland and her husband, Jer, are travelling around the world and saving money at the same time — by swapping (交换) houses with strangers to keep the bills low. They only have to pay for their flights, meaning they save hundreds of pounds on their holidays each year.
The couple’s occupation (职业) allows them to enjoy long periods of school holidays. Both work as school Deputy Principals, which allows them to take their children, Cian, 23, Miah,13, and Faye, 11, abroad up to four times per year. On average, they pay £1, 250 per year for flights.
Sharon, from Cork, Ireland, has exchanged her home with a stranger 40 times in the last 13 years and says she’s never looked back. She said, “I couldn’t imagine travelling any other way now. Swapping our Irish Georgian farmhouse for another house abroad is amazing. There are home-style houses, modern city apartments and beautiful architectural period houses too. Every holiday is different and staying in someone else’s house makes our experience more rewarding and enjoyable. We are able to meet more locals and understand the culture more than we would if we were to stay at a hotel. We bring our laptops during the summer weeks as we are both responsible for timetabling and school planning but this can be done at a distance.”
Sharon has visited various cities in America, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, the UK and their home country of Ireland. “But our favourite place is Italy. We have been lucky enough to visit there six times. Over the years, every experience has been great — from taking in the architecture to the food. Physical education, or gym class, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly “yes”.
Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s studies and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.
The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity(肥胖症). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. Physical education classes act as a public health measure to encourage activity and help teens have healthy weights.
Inactivity(不活跃) increases teens’ risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes towardtreating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic(学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.
14.According to Paragraph 2, what role does physical education play in high school?

It was Christmas Eve when my elder sister and decided to open our presents before our mom got home from work. She usually came home about an hour after we got home from school, which we thought was plenty of time to take a peek at the gifts under the tree.
My elder sister opened present after present while I was ordered to stand guard at the big window in our front room. Finally, when my sister’s curiosity was satisfied, we traded places.
After unwrapping a few presents, I found it faster to open one end of a present and peek inside. “Cool! Mom and Dad got me head phones for my stereo!” I pulled the headphones out of the box and was about to put them on when my sister shouted, “Quick! Wrap it back up! Mom’s coming!”
I put the headphones back hurriedly in the box but my hands were shaking. My heart pounded harder as I tried to get the tape to stick. I had just finished burying the package with my headphones in it when my mother came into the front room. I jumped up and said, “Hi, Mom!” She smiled at me and said “Hi” back, but didn’t appear to suspect a thing. My heart began to slow as I took a deep breath.
On Christmas morning, my sister and I smiled and gave award-winning performances when we opened our presents — again. “Headphones!” I shouted. “Thanks, it’s just what I wanted.” After everything had been opened, my sister and I looked at each other, and our eyes met. Our secret was safe, but somehow Christmas morning didn’t feel the same.
My sister and I never opened our Christmas presents early again. I don’t know if it was that opening our gifts for the second time just wasn’t as much fun as the first time, or if we came too close to getting caught and didn’t want to think about what our mother would have done to us.

There seems to be a lot of talk these days about what is fair, and what is not. Most people tend to believe life should be fair. Some of the 99% seem to believe life has somehow treated them unfairly, and some of the 1% feel life hasn’t treated them fairly enough. My questions are these: What is fairness? Is life fair? Should life be fair?
We clearly have no choice about how we come into this world. We have little choice early in life. But as we grow older, choices abound. I have long believed that while we have no control over the beginning of our life, the majority of us have the ability to influence the outcomes we attain. Fairness is a state of mind, and most often, an unhealthy state of mind. Our state in life cannot, or at least should not, be blamed on our parents, our teachers, or our society—it’s largely based on the choices we make, and the attitudes we adopt.
Life is full of examples of the uneducated, the mentally and physically challenged people born into war-torn areas, who could have complained about life being unfair, but who instead chose a different path. Regardless of the challenges they faced, they had the character to choose contribution over complaint.
I agree that challenges exist. I agree that many have an uphill battle due to the severity of the challenges they face. What I disagree with is the attempt to use fairness to solve all problems in the world. Rules and orders don’t create fairness, but people’s desire and determination can work around most life challenges.
It doesn’t matter whether you are born with a silver spoon, plastic spoon, or no spoon at all. A friend of mine came to this country from Africa in his late teens, barely spoke the language, drove a cab while working his way through college, and is now the president of a technology services firm. Stories such as this are all around us-they are not miracles, nor are they the rare exception. They do, however, demonstrate blindness to the mindset of the fairness.
22.What does the underlined word “abound” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A.Change fully. B.Remain the same.
    C.Exist in numbers. D.Disappear completely.
23.What opinion does the writer agree with?
A.Most of us can influence the results we achieve.
    B.Our background determines our choices.
C.People’s desire and determination create unfairness.
D.We should depend on fairness to solve all problems.
24.What is the primary purpose of the text?
    A.To promote efforts over complaint.
B.To stress the importance of fairness.
C.To share an inspiring story of a friend.
D.To prove that fairness is a state of mind.
25.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Fairness Is Justice B.Life Is Not Fair—Deal With It
C.Fairness Comes First D.Fairness Creates Chances

In the recently opened Our Broken Planet exhibition in London’s Natural History Museum, a small piece of dark material covered with faint holes is on show in a display container. The nodule(小块) could easily be mistaken for coal, but its true nature is much more interesting.
The nodule is a combination of metals and oceanographers have discovered trillions of them on Earth’s ocean floors. Each is rich in some of the most important elements for making the electric cars, wind turbines and solar panels that we need to replace the carbon-emitting motors, power plants and factories now damaging our climate.
These nodules could therefore help humanity save itself from the ill effects of global warming, argue mining companies who say their exploitation should be rated an international priority. By mining up chunks(块) from the deep we can slow the burning of our planet’s surface.
“We desperately need substantial amounts of metals contained by these nodules to build electric cars and power plants,” says Hans Smit, chief executive of Florida’s Oceans Minerals, which has announced plans to mine for nodules. “We cannot increase land supplies of these metals without having a significant environmental impact. It’s our only alternative. ”
Other researchers disagree, however. They say mining deep-sea nodules would be disastrous for our already stressed, plastic-ridden, overheated oceans. Delicate, long-living residents of the deep — shells, fish, corals and squids — would be erased by mining. At the same time, mud with poisonous metals would be sent upwards to disturb marine food-chains.
“It is hard to imagine how seabed mines could workably operate without destroying the ocean species,” says UK marine biologist Helen Scales, a view shared by David Attenborough, who has called for a pause on all deep-sea mining plans. “In this case it means the destruction of an ecosystem, an issue worth the best attention from every entity(实体) involved. ”he says.
For better or worse, these mineral nodules are going to play a critical role in determining our future — either by releasing us from our current ecological headaches or by stimulating even more fatal outcomes.
29.Which of the following best describes the nodule on display?
A.An interesting artificial artwork. B.A difficult-to-tell chunk of coal.
C.An oceanic piece rich in metals. D.A container for electric materials.
30.What do the underlined words “our only alternative” in the paragraph 4 refer to?
A.New technology for power plants. B.Massive production of electric cars.
C.Land exploitation for more minerals. D.Underwater mining for specific metals.
31.What is David’s major concern for deep-sea nodule exploitation?
A.The disorderly movements of ocean species.
B.The disturbance of ecological balance at sea.
C.The operational workability for seabed mining.
D.The uneven distribution of profits among entities.
32.Why do the mineral nodules play a critical role in determining our future?
A.They can be used both for good and for bad.
B.Their exploitation can bring opposing effects.
C.They contain beneficial and harmful elements.
D.Their exploiters cannot reach agreement till now.

When I was 9 and walking on the road, the people of my village frowned at me, a young girl in a school uniform. They asked Dad, “Why waste your money like this?” Dad said nothing and told me to walk ahead. Education was very important to him. He would sit us down and paint a picture with colors of the future he saw for us in every letter we wrote, in every math problem we solved.
However, today as I sit at my wedding, there are still plenty of colors all over the room: red on my nails, gold necklaces around my neck, and white roses lying in the center. Women in pink from all over the village sit in a circle playing the hand-drum. My uncle spared no expense when it came to decorations, jewelry and clothing — which was ironic(讽刺的), because obviously, he had no other financial option but to marry off his 15-year-old niece who was declared his responsibility after the tragic death of his sister and brother-in-law. But it was a matter of izzat he said, not wanting to cheaper himself.
Izzat, what a funny word. It was so delicately placed on the shoulders of every woman in this society, getting heavier as she grows older yet somehow weaker — the tiniest wind can tear it to pieces. Izzat. Maybe one day I’ll live in a village where izzat is torn up through marrying a girl twenty-three years younger than you, and by selling off your only daughter because there was no other solution for your poor family.
Maybe one day, I’ll live in a world where the birth of a girl isn’t followed by a sigh or a ‘Never mind. Next time. ‘On that day, we’ll hand over crayons to our young girls, and watch them color our world; we’ll tell them: deepen the blue of the sky by flying planes through them, paint the grass greener with every football match you play and leave traces of silver from the surgical knife in your hand — take any other color you need and draw rainbows upon rainbows until they’re enough to build a bridge to your dreams. One day, for sure.
33.Why did people frown at the author?
    A.They disliked her school uniform.
    B.They treated girls’ education lightly.
C.They thought she was too young for school.
D.They wondered why her dad was speechless.
34.What does the underlined word “izzat” mean in paragraph 2?
    A.Honor. B.Ambition. C.Fortune. D.Knowledge.
35.What can be inferred about the girls from paragraph 3?
A.They are considered as the future of society.
B.They are supposed to be gifted in all walks of life.
C.They are regarded as tradable goods for the family.
D.They are thought to be responsible for their marriage.
36.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Color the Girls’Future B.Live Up to Family Izzat
    C.Marry Your Mr. Right D.Be Father’s Daughter

由第一段“It was Christmas Eve when my elder sister and decided to open our presents before our mom got home from work. She usually came home about an hour after we got home from school, which we thought was plenty of time to take a peek at the gifts under the tree. (那是圣诞节前夕,我的姐姐和我决定在妈妈下班回家之前打开我们的礼物。她通常在我们放学回家后一个小时左右回家,我们认为这是足够的时间来偷看树下的礼物)”和第三段中的“After unwrapping a few presents, I found it faster to open one end of a present and peek inside. (打开几件礼物后,我发现打开礼物的一端并偷看里面会更快)”可知,出于好奇心,作者和姐姐在圣诞节前夕趁母亲不在时偷偷提前打开了圣诞礼物。故选C项。
19.推理判断题。由第四段中的“I put the headphones back hurriedly in the box but my hands were shaking. My heart pounded harder as I tried to get the tape to stick. (我急忙把耳机放回盒子里,但我的手在发抖。当我试图让胶带粘住时,我的心跳得更厉害了)”可知,听到母亲马上要回来,作者双手发抖、心跳加快。由此可推知,作者既紧张又害怕。故选D项。
20.推理判断题。由倒数第二段“On Christmas morning, my sister and I smiled and gave award-winning performances when we opened our presents — again. “Headphones!” I shouted. “Thanks, it’s just what I wanted.” After everything had been opened, my sister and I looked at each other, and our eyes met. Our secret was safe, but somehow Christmas morning didn’t feel the same.
由最后一段“My sister and I never opened our Christmas presents early again. I don’t know if it was that opening our gifts for the second time just wasn’t as much fun as the first time, or if we came too close to getting caught and didn’t want to think about what our mother would have done to us.

划线词句前文“We have little choice early in life. (我们在人生的初期几乎没有选择。)”说明人生的初期没有选择,相对而言,人生的后期就有了选择,从而推知划线词句“But as we grow older, choices abound. (但随着年龄的增长,我们的选择abound)”其中划线词汇应为“有了(选择),有更多(的选择)”的意思,选项C“大量存在”与之意义最为接近。故选C项。
23.推理判断题。根据第二段中“I have long believed that while we have no control over the beginning of our life, the majority of us have the ability to influence the outcomes we attain. (我一直相信,虽然我们无法控制生命的开始,但我们大多数人都有能力影响我们所取得的结果。)”可知,作者认为我们大多数人都能影响我们所取得的结果。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其根据第三段中“Regardless of the challenges they faced, they had the character to choose contribution over complaint. (不管他们面临的挑战是什么,他们都有选择贡献而不是抱怨的品格。)”可知,文章的主要目的是要告诉人们要努力进取而不是抱怨。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其根据最后一段中“It doesn’t matter whether you are born with a silver spoon, plastic spoon, or no spoon at all. (无论你是含着银汤匙,塑料汤匙,还是根本没有汤匙出生的都没关系。)”以及“Stories such as this are all around us-they are not miracles, nor are they the rare exception. They do, however, demonstrate blindness to the mindset of the fairness. (这样的故事在我们身边随处可见——它们不是奇迹,也不是罕见的例外。然而,他们却确实证明了他们对公平思维模式的无视。)”等内容可知,本文用身边的事例阐述了人生中没有绝对的公平,但我们要勇敢面对不公平的道理。选项B符合文章主题,故选B项。

31.推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段中“In this case it means the destruction of an ecosystem, an issue worth the best attention from every entity involved.”(在这种情况下,它意味着生态系统的破坏,这是一个值得每一个相关实体高度关注的问题。)

从第三段最后一句“…and by selling off your only daughter because there was no other solution for your poor family”(卖掉了你唯一的女儿,因为你可怜的家庭没有其他解决办法。)
