Kurth Reis of San Francisco, California, has been through many hard times in his life. In 2018, Reis had a serious motorcycle accident and spent time in a hospital. The accident affected him deeply, body and spirit. He had several medical operations. Reis said he felt like he was
“reborn” each time he woke after an operation. Following 88 days in the hospital, Reis was
released and felt ready to change his ways.
Lately, he says he just wants to cheer people up by making bubbles. You can watch him perform his bubble art for hours at a time around the city’s streets and in its parks. Sometimes he puts out a glass container called a tip jar. People who watch his show can drop money into it if they want to.
If the weather is good for bubbles, Reis makes a special mixture that can make bubbles the
size of a small car. Humidity, or the amount of water in the air, is good for bubbles. So, he does not perform on very dry days. To make his large bubble, he puts a small rope hanging from two long sticks into the bubble mixture. As he removes it, he opens his arms wide and the bubbles begin to form. Once enough air is inside the bubble, he moves his arms back together to set the bubble free. Some people feel it looks like a bubble “ballet”.
While Reis may seem like a bubble-making expert, he only got started in April 2020. Reis
can support himself with donations from the audiences. But money is not what stirs him to
make bubbles. He feels his art is useful in more important ways. Not long ago, a woman told Reis after a performance that his bubbles had lifted her spirit when her dad died.
Reis can see smiles rise from under the face covers worn by those watching him perform.
Children cheer and clap their hands. Reis said such reactions make him feel like an essential worker whose job is to spread joy.
“I’m just trying to put a smile on somebody’s face by doing some bubbles,” said Reis.
    24. What can we know about Kurth Reis from Paragraph 1?
    A. He had to repay his operation fees.
    B. He intended to do something different.
    C. He suffered a minor motorcycle accident.
    D. He gave up his career as a motorcyclist.
    25. What may people do when they watch Reis’ performances?
    A. Put some money into a tip jar near him.
    B. Give him applause when he sets a bubble free.

    C. Grasp a small rope hanging from two long sticks.
    D. Add a special mixture to help him make large bubbles.
    26. What does the underlined word “stirs” mean in Paragraph 4?
    A. Enables. B. Determines. C. Requires. D. Encourages.
    27. What can you learn from the passage?
    A. Believe you can and you are halfway there.
    B. The best way to predict the future is to create it.
    C. Everything comes to him who waits.
    D. Small actions can have a big impact.

When preparing fruit and vegetables, many people will peel (削皮) them. But often, it’s not
    necessary.
Fruit and vegetables are rich sources of nutrition like vitamins. Not consuming enough of these nutrient-rich foods is linked to an increased risk of diseases. Eating 400g of fruit and
vegetables a day, as the WHO recommends, is difficult to achieve for many people. So could
consuming fruit and vegetable peels help with this issue by adding important nutrients to people’s diets?
They can certainly contribute. For example, nutritionally important amounts of vitamins and
minerals are found in the peels of seven root vegetables: beetroot, field mustard, wild carrot, sweet potato, radish, ginger and white potato. And the US Department of Agriculture shows that unpeeled apples contain 15% more vitamin C, 267% more vitamin K, 20% more calcium(钙) and 85% more fibre than peeled apples.
Another reason is the effect on the environment. According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, uneaten food, including peels, generates 8%-10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions(排放). New Zealand alone reports an annual wastage of 13,658 tonnes of vegetable peels and 986 tonnes of fruit peels.
Given the nutrient content of peels and its contribution to food waste, why do people peel fruit and vegetables at all? Some must be peeled as the outer parts don’t taste nice, are hard to clean or cause harm. Also, peeling may be a necessary part of the recipe, for example, when making mashed potato. But many peels, such as carrot and kiwifruit, are suitable to be eaten, yet people habitually peel them anyway. Some people peel fruit and vegetables because they are concerned about pesticides (杀虫剂) on the surface.
If you want to find out more about fruit and vegetable peels and what to do with it, there is
lots of advice online including help on how to deal with peels. With a little investigation and creativity, you can help to reduce waste and increase your fruit and vegetables intake.
    28. Where is the text most probably taken from?
    A. A cooking guidebook. B. A life magazine.
    C. A poster about environment. D. An ad about a health website.
    29. How can eating fruit and vegetable peels benefit people’s health?
    A. Not eating the peels will lead to higher risks of some diseases.
    B. Some significant vitamins and minerals are only found in peels.
    C. Eating peels can increase people’s intake of important nutrients.
    D. Peels have more nutrients than fruit and vegetables’ inner parts.
    30. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning New Zealand?
    A. To highlight the serious food problem in the country.
.To draw our attention to greenhouse gas emissions.B.

    C. To call on New Zealanders not to throw away peels.
    D. To show peels’ negative impact on the environment.
    31. Why do so many people peel carrots?
    A. Because some recipes tell them to do so.
    B. Because the outer parts are hard to clean.
    C. Because there exists too much pesticides.
    D. Because they’re used to peeling vegetables.
    D
It’s a late night in the Metro area of Phoenix, Arizona. Under the streetlights, a car can be seen slowly approaching and parking. A green and blue ‘W’ glows (发光) from the windscreen, giving off just enough light to see inside—showing a completely empty driver seat. When the person waiting for it opens the door to climb inside, a voice greets him. “Good evening, this car is yours,” it says. This is a Waymo One robotaxi, ordered just 10 minutes ago using an app.
The promise of driverless technology has long been inviting. It has the potential to improve
our experience of commuting (通勤) and long journeys and take people out of high-risk working
environments. It’s key to helping us build the cities of the future, lowering carbon emissions.
And it could make traveling safer. “We want safer roads and less accidents. Automation (自动化) could provide that, ” says Camilla Fowler, head of automated transport for the UK’s Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).
But in order for driverless technology to become mainstream, much still needs to change. “Driverless vehicles should be a very calm way of getting from A to B. But not every
human driver around it will be driving in that way,” says David Hynd, from TRL. “It’s got to be
able to deal with human drivers speeding, for instance, or breaking the rules of the road.”
And that’s not the only challenge. There’s regulation, rethinking the highway code, public perception, improving the infrastructure (基础设施) of our streets, towns, cities, and the big
question of ultimate responsibility for road accidents. “The whole insurance industry is looking
into how they’re going to deal with that change from a person being responsible and in charge to the vehicle doing that,” says Richard Jinks, vice president of commercial at Oxfordshire-based
driverless vehicle software company Oxbotica, which has been testing its technology in cars and
delivery vehicles at several locations across the UK and Europe.
The ultimate vision (终极愿景) experts are working towards is of completely driverless
vehicles, not only for personal use but also for industry and wider transport networks, that can be used anywhere and everywhere around the world.

But with all these challenges in place, what exactly does the next 10 years have in store for autonomous vehicles?
    32. What is special about the car mentioned in paragraph 1?
    A. It drives very slowly. B. It is automatic and drives itself.
    C. It can sense its driver’s feelings. D. There is enough light to see inside.
    33. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about driverless vehicles?
    A. Their main dangers. B. Their special design.
    C. Their wide popularity. D. Their potential advantages.
    34. With what might Hynd and Jinks both agree about driverless technology?
    A. It isn’t ready for wide application.
    B. It will make driving a safe experience.
    C. It is developing as smoothly as planned.
    D. It will increase profits in the insurance industry.
    35. How does the author feel about the future of driverless vehicles?
    A. Hopeful. B. Surprised. C. Uncertain. D. Disappointed.
    第二节(共5小题; 每小题2.5分,满分 12.5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为
    多余选项。
Food plays an important role in our lives. We can learn a lot about a particular culture by exploring food. In fact, it may be difficult to fully define a culture without a nod to their cuisine. Here’s why food is the best way to understand a culture.
36 It doesn’t matter where you’re from — you have to eat. And your societal
culture most likely evolves(进化) from the universal need to eat. Food preservation (保存)
techniques are unique to climates and lifestyle. Ever wonder why the process to preserve meat is
so different around the world? 37 In Morocco, Khlea is a dish composed of dried beef
and then packed in animal fat. When preserved correctly, it’s still good for two years when
stored at room temperature. That makes a lot of sense in Morocco, where the country historically has desert landscape, and extremely warm, dry temperatures.
38 Some people have cuisines that are entirely based on meat, and others are
almost entirely plant based. These cuisines took shape in the long course of history. For example, India’s cuisine is extremely varied from region to region, with meat and wheat dishes in the north, vegetarian diets in the south.
Sometimes, a certain ingredient of one dish can reveal cultural secrets. 39 And
perhaps one of the most interesting results from the mix of two cuisines is Chicken Tikka Masala. It seems to be an Indian Mughali dish, but was actually invented by the British!
Food tourism — it’s a whole new way to travel. Food tourists won’t just focus on having a
glass of beer at Oktoberfest (德国十月啤酒节). 40 They may even learn how to make
their own fresh beer. And they have the chance to learn local skills that can send insight(洞悉)
into a whole other aspect of a particular region’s culture.
    A. Meat is more difficult to preserve than plants.
    B. Local cuisines show historical eating patterns.
    C. It has something to do with local resources, needs and climates.
    D. Food is the most important necessity of the people.
    E. Some cuisines change accordingly during different times of the year.
    F. Black pepper originates in Asia but becomes a key part of European cuisine.
    G. Moreover, they will be interested in learning the German beer making process.

In her Nobel Lecture, Tu Youyou 56 (refer) to the strengths of both traditional
Chinese medicine and Western medicine, and pointed out that there is great potential for future advances if scientists make good use of these strengths. Their efforts to conduct research in both
fields may 57 (final) pay off. A good example 58 (illustrate) this point is the
discovery of qinghaosu in 1972, which was intended as 59 effective treatment for malaria.
The Chinese herb qinghao, from 60 qinghaosu comes, has been used to cure diseases for
almost 2,000 years. However, it was not until the 1970s that Tu succeeded in discovering

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath a willow tree. It must be as sick,
for the branches were kind of yellow and dry. I was a deserted girl. Endless quarrels with my parents had left me nowhere to go but this desolate (荒无人烟的) corner of the park. As I sat on the bench, things that happened recently began to flash through. Days seemed months to me recently. No cozy home to stay. No happy memories about my life. No considerate family members to talk to. Even the book I was reading was no fun. Not content with life, I had a good reason to frown, for the world was intended to drag me down.
And if that were not enough to ruin my day, a young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play. He stood right in front of me with his head tilted (倾斜) down and said with great excitement,“Look what I found!" In his hand was a flower. What a pitiful sight, its petals (花瓣) were all worn- not enough rain, or too little light. He must have picked the flower from somewhere shady and sunless, just like where I was staying these days. I couldn't help being
self-pitying. Wanting him to take his dead flower away and go off to play, I faked a smile and
then looked away.“Why couldn't everyone just leave me be!”I thought to myself, upset and
    gloomy.
    But instead of leaving, he sat next to me and placed the flower to his nose and declared loudly with certainty,“It sure smells pretty and it must be beautiful, too. That's why I picked it;
here, it is for you." The “weed” before me was dying or dead, not vibrant with colors, orange,
yellow or red-anyone having eyes can see that clearly! But I knew I must take it, or he might
never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, “Just what I need.”Strangely, instead of
