In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn.Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top:“ When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all5
around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.”24.Why did Dorothy and Rosamond go to the Rocky Mountains?A.To teach in a school. D.A diary entry.CSoot () pollution is speeding up climate-driven melting in Antarctica, a new study suggests, raising questions about how to protect the delicate continent from the increasing number ofhumans who want to visit.“It really makes us question, is our presence really needed?” says Alia Khan, one of the authors of the new study. “We have quite a large black carbon footprint in Antarctica, which is enhancing snow and ice melt.”Black carbon is the leftover thing from burning plants or fossil fuels. Soot in Antarcticacomes primarily from waste gases of cruise ships (游轮), vehicles and airplanes, although some pollution travels on the wind from other parts of the globe. The dark particles (微粒) coat whitesnow and absorb heat from the sun the way a black T-shirt does on a warm day. The blanket ofdark bits speeds up melting that was already happening more quickly because of global warming.6
When snow and ice are uncovered, they reflect an enormous amount of sunlight before it can turn into heat. “These are the mirrors on our planet,” says Sonia Nagorski, a scientist at the University of Alaska Southeast. “When those mirrors are covered in a film of dark bits, they don’t send back that much light and heat. That means more heat is trapped on Earth, speeding up melting and contributing to global warming.”As a scientist who personally visits Antarctica every year, Khan says she is troubled by her own research results. On the one hand, she goes to Antarctica to collect crucial data about how quickly the snow and ice there are disappearing. “But then when we come to conclusions like this it really does make us think twice about how frequently we need to visit the continent,” she says, “and what kind of regulations should be placed on tourism as well.” That could mean requiring that cruise ships and vehicles be electric, for example, or limiting the number of visitors each year.28.  What is Khan’s attitude towards human actions in Antarctica according to paragraph 2?A. Angry and abusive. B. Cold and uninterested.C. Doubtful and anxious. D. Admiring and delighted.29.  What is the main cause of soot pollution in Antarctica?A. The quick melting of ice and snow. B. The emission from various transport.C. The remaining parts of burning plants. D. The floating gases from other continents.30.  What do we know from Nagorski?A. The covered ice is less reflective. B. The melting speed of ice is slower than before.C. The dark blanket serves as a big mirror. D. The sunlight gets increasingly stronger recently.31.  Which is the most suitable title for the text?A. What made our planet so polluted? B. Who is to blame for air pollution?C. Can electric vehicles save tourism? D. Are we welcome to the South Pole?DEating a traditional Mediterranean-type diet-rich in foods such as seafood, fruit, and nuts- - may help reduce the risk of dementia (痴呆) by almost a quarter, a new study has revealed.Experts at Newcastle University found that individuals who ate a Mediterranean-like diet had up to 23% lower risk for dementia than those who did not. This research, published today in the journal BMC Medicine, is one of the biggest studies of its kind.7
Scientists analyzed data from 60,298 individuals from the UK Biobank, including individuals from across the UK, who had completed a dietary assessment. The authors scored individuals based on how closely their diet matched the key features of a Mediterranean one. The participants were allowed for almost a decade, during which time there were 882 cases of dementia. The authors considered each individual’s genetic risk for dementia by estimating what isknown as their polygenic (多基因的) risk-a measure of all the different genes that are related tothe risk of dementia. They found that there were similar associations between sticking to Mediterranean diet and dementia risk in individuals with higher and lower genetic risk for this condition, which may indicate that even for those with a higher genetic risk, having a better diet could reduce the likelihood of developing the condition.Dr Janice Ranson, joint lead author on the paper, said: “Dementia impacts the lives ofmillions of individuals throughout the world, and there are currently limited options for treating this condition. Our study shows a Mediterranean diet that has a high intake of healthy plant-based foods may be important for future strategies to reduce dementia risk. For example, the dementia prevention efforts could go beyond general healthy diet advice and focus on choosing specific foods and nutrients.”The authors caution that their analysis is limited to individuals who self-reported their ethnic background as white, British or Irish, as genetic data was only available based on European countries, and that further research is needed in a range of populations to determine the potential benefit.32.  What did scientists do during the study?A. They scored the Mediterranean diet.B. They tracked the participants’ health.C. They collected data from 60298 families. D. They selected 882 potential dementia cases.33.  What can we infer about the Mediterranean diet from paragraph 4?Its effect is closely related to the polygenic risk.It increases one’s chance of developing dementia. It can reduce dementia risk regardless of one’s genetic risk.It can provide protection against various genetic diseases.34.  What are Dr Janice Ranson’s words mainly about?A. Values of the study. B. Features of the study.8
    C. Elements of a healthy diet. D. Ways to deal with dementia.35.  What will further research most probably focus on?Finding out more benefits of the Mediterranean diet.Applying the findings to the treatment of dementia.Involving participants of diverse races and nationalities.Studying the rate of dementia within different age groups.第二节( 5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5)阅读下面短文,从选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Workout fads (狂热) come and go, but virtually no other exercise program is as lasting asyoga(瑜伽). One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend was different from any other friends they had brought home. With a yellowish coat and tiny brown spots dropped across her nose, she was the cutest puppy I had ever seen. When my husband got home that evening, he recognized the breed——a beagle puppy(猎兔犬, not more than twelve weeks old, he guessed. She ran to him right away and after dinner climbed into his lap to watch TV. By now the girls were both begging me to keep her.She had no collar or identifying marks of any sort. I didn't know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost-and-found but I really didn't want to. It would break the kids' hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely. I tried to find seemingly logical reasons to explain my behavior.By the end of the week, she was part of our family. We had named the puppy Molly. She was very intelligent and good with the girls. This was a good idea, I thought. It was time for the girls to12
take responsibility for another life, so they would learn the nurturing skills they'd need if they decided to become mommies when they grew up.The following week, something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular ad jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was asking for the return of a lost beagle puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook.注意:1.续写词数应为 150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Paragraph 1: Instead, I pretended I hadn't seen the ad._______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2: I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately seeking._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________13
