I can’t say how grateful I am to my daughter’s teacher, but he really changed her life in a way that neither of us could do.
My 10-year-old daughter suffered from dyslexia(诵读困难). Although we made every effort to tell her she had many gifts, she had decided she must be stupid. She battled with her work and her teachers. When it came to examinations, she would have difficulty reading the questions, which made her fail almost every exam.
Her math teacher, seemingly the only teacher who understood her dyslexia, unexpectedly offered to read her the questions(not help with the answers of course). The result? An unheard of B for math. The act of one thoughtful teacher had, perhaps for the first time in my daughter’s life, unlocked her right to enjoy life to the full.
I could of course not allow this wonderful event to go by without thanking the math teacher. I phoned the school. When I asked to speak to him, I received a very guarded “why” from the gatekeeper. The surprise in his voice was clear when I replied “I want to thank him”. He called the teacher. The teacher came on the line with the same response. I said I just wanted to speak to him about my daughter’s math result.
“I want to thank you for reading the questions to my daughter for her math exam. Not only did she get a B but you have no idea of the influence your action has had on my daughter’s self-belief and hopes for her future. ” I loved the way his voice lightened as we went on to have a lovely talk about common interests.
My daughter’s sufferings from dyslexia continue to this day. However, she is now an experienced Family and Youth Care worker who believes in herself, shows self-confidence, has helped and continues to help many people in her life and is happily married with four children.
24. How did the math teacher help the author’s daughter?
A. By praising her for her small progress.
B. By encouraging her to try what she liked.
C. By helping her to face up to her problems.
D. By reading her the questions during a exam.
25. How did the math teacher respond at first when the author talked to him?
A. He felt pretty lucky. B. He showed watchfulness.
C. He responded politely. D. He was greatly annoyed.
26. What does the author try to tell us about her daughter through the last paragraph?
A. She’s achieved great success in her work.
B. She’s become a successful learner finally.
C. She’s changed a lot with the teacher’s help.
D. She’s devoted to helping many people like her.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Lovely Talk with a Math Teacher
B. My Daughter’s Way to Success
C. My Daughter’s Battle with Dyslexia
D. The Power of One Act

Have you ever loved a TV show? Like, you can’t wait to talk about it and are eager to watch the next episode. This is a growing social trend—Binge-watching(刷剧).
Binge-watching is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in quick succession(连续). With developments in the speed and connectivity of the Internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.
This behavior is nothing new. In fact, “binge-watching” has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like” suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode.
However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back(一集接一集地), almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have neglected their household chores. Next we’ll be missing work!
Bingeing has other connections-binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said, “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move. ” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction?
The countless number of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning then it becomes a problem. So, what’s the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, “A little of what you fancy does you good. ”
28. How did the writer develop the second paragraph?
A. By listing some examples. B. By telling a story.
C. By giving a definition. D. By analyzing the cause and effect.
29.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “concurrently” in Para.3?
A. For convenience. B. Free of charge.
C. In detail. D. At the same time.
30.What Lindsey said in Paragraph 5 implies that______.
A. people can’t resist the temptation
B. people can’t control their feelings
C. people have no patience to do work
D. people are addicted to waiting for a new episode
31.What advice did the writer give at last?
A. To keep online media from stopping functioning.
B. To enjoy entertainment as much as possible.
C. To watch episodes in a moderate way.
D. To learn life lessons from the episodes.

When it comes to operating homework standard, different schools have different solutions. For the last thirty years, the homework standard of a Massachusetts elementary school has always been the “10-minute” rule, which means that each grade has a maximum of 10 minutes of homework per day.
But recently, that elementary school has announced plans for a no-homework pilot(试点的) for the coming school year by extending two hours to provide more classroom instructions. “We really want kids to go home at 4 o’clock. ” Kelly Elementary School Principal Jackie Glasheen said. “We want them to enjoy their families. We want them to go to soccer practice or football practice. ”
New solutions to homework differ by community. These local debates aren’t easily understood by the fact that even education experts disagree about what’s best for kids. The most all-round research on homework so far comes from an analysis by Duke University professor Harris Cooper, who found evidence of a positive relationship between homework and student achievement, meaning students who did homework performed better in school. Cooper’s analysis focused on how homework influences test scores. The relationship was stronger for older students—in 7th through 12th grade, than for those in younger grades, for whom there was a weak relationship between homework and performance.
Although there is the weak relationship between homework and performance for young children, Cooper argues that a small amount of homework is useful for all students. Second-graders should not be doing two hours of homework each night, he said, but they also shouldn’t be doing no homework.
However, Cathy Vatterott, an education professor at the University Missouri-St. Louis, thinks there is not enough evidence that homework is helpful for students in elementary school, “Relationship is not a cause, ” she said “Does homework cause achievement, or do high achievers do more homework? ” Vatterott thinks there should be more stress on improving the quality of homework tasks, and she supports efforts to ban homework for younger kids.
32. What will Kelly Elementary School have in the new term?
A. More physical education classes. B. Some football practice.
C. “10-minute” homework. D. No homework.
33. Who can perform better according to Cooper’s analysis?
A. Younger students in all grades with no homework.
B. Younger students in lower grades with no homework.
C. Older students in lower grades with more homework.
D. Older students in higher grades with more homework.
34. What’s the writer’s attitude towards “10-minute” homework?
A. Neutral. B. Negative. C. Approving. D. Critical.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Is homework good for students? B. How much homework is proper?
C. Does high-quality homework work? D. Do students really hate homework?

If anyone had told me three years ago that I would be spending most of my weekends camping, I would have laughed heartily. Campers, in my eyes, were people who enjoyed insect bites, ill-cooked meals, and uncomfortable sleeping bags. They had nothing in common with me. 36
The friends who introduced me to camping thought that it meant to be a pioneer.
37 We slept in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long distance to take the shower and use the bathroom. This brief visit with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work, recovering from a bad case of sunburn and the doctor’s bill for my son’s food poisoning.
I was, nevertheless, talked into going on another fun-filled holiday in the wilderness. 38 Instead, we had a pop-up camper(弹出式露营车) with comfortable beds and an air conditioner. My nature-loving friends had remembered to bring all the necessities of life.
39 We have done a lot of it since. Recently, we bought a twenty-eight-foot travel trailer(旅行拖车) complete with a bathroom and a built-in TV set. There is a separate bedroom, a modern kitchen with a refrigerator. The trailer even has matching carpet and curtains.
40 It must be true that sooner or later, everyone finds his or her way back to nature. I recommend that you find your way in style.
A. Things are going to be improved.
B. This time there was no tent.
C. The trip they took me on was a rough one.
D. I must say that I have certainly come to enjoy camping.
E. I was to learn a lot about camping since then, however.

The ball went flying as if it were going to space. “That was high! ” Kristy said in surprise and we went after the ball. We all had a great time.
Later we had supper and the food my aunt made was good. While Kristy was helping do the dishes, David and I ran outside to play. We started taking turns riding my bike. David suggested that we ride it to the forest. And I agreed. David and I got on the bike and David started going fast.
As we rode through the forest ,I felt the wind brushing my face. It felt so great and free. Suddenly the bike hit a fallen branch and we went flying off the bike. Lying on the ground, I felt dizzy(眩晕的). I checked myself for injuries and saw some but they didn’t bother me.
“David! ” I shouted out loudly and anxiously.
