A United Nations group of experts predicted that global warming would reach extreme levels by the early 2030s. The likely result: ever-worsening weather disasters and related events—hunger, extinction of some plant and wildlife species and the spread of infectious diseases.
There is still time to avoid these disasters, but the window for action is closing quickly. Yet the reality is, few countries are on track to meet their existing goals to address climate change. Luckily, there is one bright note in this otherwise black picture: individual innovators are stepping up to try to find solutions to fight climate crisis using technology in new and creative ways.
When Beth began working in the fashion industry, she was disappointed to find that many makers tended to largely guess what people would actually buy. As a result, companies overproduced clothes, creating needless waste and environmental pollution.
To reduce unsold products and material waste in the fashion industry, in 2015, Beth began her own company, Unspun, which seeks solutions by making on-demand custom clothing tailored to a buyer’s body using a 3D-body scan. “We will never make clothes before they have a home.” said Beth. Its self-developed 3D-weaving(编织) machine enables customisation using a body scanner.
Unspun launched its first 3D woven items using the innovative tech last year. Since then, the company has produced thousands of pairs of pants, hats, bags in a test run for a large European retailer(零售商).
Unspun doesn’t intend to keep its novel production technique to itself. The company is in the process of building microsites around the world to localize 3D weaving production. For example, the company has set up its office in Hong Kong with a focus on business development, marketing and customer services. “Our goal is to reduce the global human carbon footprint by 1 percent, and the only way to realistically get there is to become a platform, working with forward-thinking brands (品牌) to collectively cleanup the industry,” says Beth.
4. What does the underlined words “bright note” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Experts’ prediction. B. Individual contribution.
C. The window for action. D. A new technology.
5. The company “Unspun” was setup to________.
A. avoid blind production B. promote the sales of clothing
C. produce 3D-weaving machines D. take the lead in the fashion industry
6. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Hong Kong?
A. To test out3D-weaving machine.
B. To stress its commercial advantages.
C. To show an application of Beth’s idea.
D. To illustrate the significance of teamwork.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?

B. Unspun: Weaving Clothes With Zero Waste
C. Global Warming: Issuing a Warning to Earth
D. 3D-weaving Machine: Hitting the Market Soon

由文章第二段“individual innovators are stepping up to try to find solutions to fight climate crisis using technology in new and creative ways.(个体创新者正在加紧努力,试图以新的创造性方式利用技术找到应对气候危机的解决方案。)”
由文章第三段“As a result, companies overproduced clothes, creating needless waste and environmental pollution.(结果,公司过度生产服装,造成了不必要的浪费和环境污染。)”第四段“To reduce unsold products and material waste in the fashion industry, in 2015, Beth began her own company, Unspun, which seeks solutions by making on-demand custom clothing tailored to a buyer’s body using a 3D-body scan.(为了减少时尚行业未售出的产品和材料浪费,2015年,Beth创办了自己的公司Unspun,该公司通过使用3D身体扫描为买家的身体量身定制定制服装来寻求解决方案。)” 故选A项。
由文章最后一段“Unspun doesn’t intend to keep its novel production technique to itself. The company is in the process of building microsites around the world to localize 3D weaving production. For example, the company has set up its office in Hong Kong with a focus on business development, marketing and customer services. (Unspun并不打算保留其新颖的制作技术。该公司正在世界各地建立微型网站,以本地化3D编织生产。例如,该公司在香港设立了办事处,专注于业务发展、营销和客户服务。)”可知,作者举例是为了说明Beth理念在现实当中的实践。故选C项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。由文章第三段“To reduce unsold products and material waste in the fashion industry, in 2015, Beth began her own company, Unspun, which seeks solutions by making on-demand custom clothing tailored to a buyer’s body using a 3D-body scan. ‘We will never make clothes before they have a home.’ said Beth. 所以B项Unspun: Weaving Clothes With Zero Waste(Unspun:零浪费织衣)符合文意。故选B项。

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that affects about 10% of adults in the United States. It is characterized by difficulty with falling asleep, or waking up too early, at least three times per week for a period of three months or more. If you happen to struggle with insomnia, you can try a weighted metal chain blanket (毯子), one that might sound a little strange but effective.
A team of researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a study to determine whether a weighted metal chain blanket could improve insomnia symptoms (症状) compared to a light plastic chain blanket. Subjects were randomly given either a weighted metal chain blanket or a light plastic chain blanket, which were the same shape and size. Those who were provided with a weighted metal chain blanket first tried on an 8-kilogram blanket. If this was too heavy, a 6-kilogram blanket was then provided. Over a four-week period, their sleep was judged using surveys and a wrist-based device called an actigraph.
They found participants who used the weighted metal chain blanket reported that their insomnia symptoms dropped significantly, while those who had used the light plastic chain blanket did not experience such obvious improvements. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms decreased much more for those who used the weighted metal chain blanket than those who used the light plastic chain blanket.
The principle behind these blankets is that the pressure of the weight provides some value of treatment. It’s almost like a baby’s wrapping blanket that calms it as it sleeps. Weighted blankets can calm your nerves. Pressure from the blanket may contribute to nervous system responses that lower your heart rate and breathing when you’re anxious. This can help you calm down and sleep. The pressure could also cause your brain to release a chemical called serotonin, which helps your mind and body calm down.
“While these findings are promising more research is needed to support the effectiveness,” says the lead researcher.
8. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By giving an example. B. By raising a question.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By describing symptoms.
9. What does paragraph 2 focus on concerning the research?
A. Its background. B. Its process. C. Its findings. D. Its limitations.
10. Why can a weighted metal chain blanket promise a better sleep?
A. Its pressure calms people down. B. Its material reduces people’s anxiety.
C. It monitors people’s heart rate. D. It gives off comforting chemicals.
11. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the research?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.
D 9. B 10. A 11. C

根据第二段关键句“Subjects were randomly given either a weighted metal chain blanket or a light plastic chain blanket, which were the same shape and size. Those who were provided with a weighted metal chain blanket first tried on an 8-kilogram blanket. If this was too heavy, a 6-kilogram blanket was then provided. Over a four-week period, their sleep was judged using surveys and a wrist-based device called an actigraph.”(受试者被随机给予相同形状和尺寸的加重金属链毯子或轻质塑料链毯子。
根据第四段关键句“The principle behind these blankets is that the pressure of the weight provides some value of treatment. It’s almost like a baby’s wrapping blanket that calms it as it sleeps. Last February, farther south in Chile, Cristina Calderon, the last known native speaker of Yaghan died—and a language fell silent. The disappearance of any tongue is a disaster, but Yaghan’s extinction will be felt particularly painfully because this is no ordinary language. It is an “isolate”: a language totally separated from those used anywhere else in the world.
Broadly told, the story of language is a family affair. The similarities between Danish and Dutch speak to a world where languages have siblings(兄弟姐妹). Isolates are different. Instead of having groups of siblings, these languages stand totally apart. Actually, many isolates were once members of larger families, but have been left isolated because the other “siblings” disappeared—usually through a mix of cultural influences or conquest. Ket, for instance, a language isolate of Siberia, was once part of the small Yenisei an language family. It is now alone, probably because of the spread of the Russian language following Russia’s conquest of Siberia between the 16th and 18th centuries.
Language isolates now consist about 200 of the estimated 7, 400 languages in use today but many are dangerously close to following Yaghan into extinction. As their vulnerability(脆弱性) has risen, so has an awareness that isolates can tell us a lot about human communication and cognition(认知). Over the years, they have offered us fresh understanding into the interplay between culture and language. “Each of these isolates is a whole different window on the mind,” says Lyle Campbell at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.
Luckily, Andra Mari Teacher Training University in Spain is beginning to teach Nasa Yuwe, an isolate language, which brings a ray of hope. However, school is not enough. If endangered languages are to survive, a welcoming cultural atmosphere needs to be created. With joint efforts, we can turn the tide, which might ensure that when older community members like Cristina Calderon die, the languages they speak live on.
12. What does Cristina Calderon’s death mean in the text?
A. The loss of a language. B. The drop of population.
C. The end of physical pain. D. The separation of a family.
13. What does the author try to explain in paragraph 2?
A. Why Danish and Dutch are similar. B. What language features Ket carries.
C. How a language can become an isolate. D. Why siblings are of great importance.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The elders should be taken good care of.
B. Isolates should be added to school courses.
C. The isolates are nowhere to be found soon.
D. Much remains to be done to preserve isolates.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To honor a well-known person. B. To explore the origins of languages.
C. To encourage studies on languages. D. To promote the preservation of languages.
A 13. C 14. D 15. D

On a nearly winter afternoon, my dad and I decided to climb the Carpathian Mountains, about 4, 500 feet high. My dad said it would be an easy three-hour trip in a natural habitat. I couldn’t wait. Having spent spring, summer, and early fall climbing the mountains, I felt confident I’d have no trouble in climbing it.
The hillside we started was rather sloping (陡峭的). This side of the mountain was covered with a pine forest. The trees were incredibly high and thick; their knotted large roots cut the ground here and there, forming natural footsteps and making the climbing a little bit easier. The air was fresh and clean. After about 30 minutes of climbing, we heard the sound of a stream and rushed to it for a drink.
After about two hours of climbing, we found ourselves traveling over snow-covered ridge (山脊). The road became harder and more dangerous. It seemed that my dad had made a mistake — the trip was not that easy a she described. Watching the steep and rocky climb ahead, I knew I was finished. My original confidence gave way to tiredness completely. My knees were in great pain and my legs were trembling, reaching the point where I couldn’t move them at all. The peak (山顶) seemed unreachable. To make matters worse, snowflakes were starting to fall and strong winds were gathering around me. I hopelessly stared at my dad. “Dad, let’s go back. I can’t move an inch,” I said tiredly with tears pooling in my eyes.
注意:
1.续写词数应为100个左右;
“Just one small step at a time,” Dad encouraged me.

Eventually, we made it to the peak.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“Just one small step at a time,” Dad encouraged me. “We need to keep moving.” “I can’t.” I insisted. “You can. Just take one small step at a time. Keep your eyes focused on your feet and on me.” Dad held my hands tightly as he continued to encourage me. “Just one small step at a time,” Dad repeated as we climbed together. Some of my steps were so small that we hardly moved at all, but I believe in the power in his words.
Eventually, we made it to the peak. Standing on the peak, I saw a range of snow-capped hills beneath. A wave of immediate excitement welled up in my heart, howling winds also cheering for us. “We make it!” I shouted crazily, hugging my dad tightly, big tears rolling down my cheeks. Years have passed since that mountain climbing, but Dad’s words have continued to be a life reminder for me — “Just one small step at a time” will get me wherever I want to be.
