The annual marathon in my town occurred as scheduled. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance in case any of them needed medical attention. As the athletes began to pace themselves, the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue running shorts and a baggy white T-shirt.
I knew we were already watching our “last runner”. Her feet turned in, yet her left knee was turned out. Her legs were so crippled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to walk, let alone run a marathon.
The driver and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance. Then we’ d slowly move forward a little bit more. As I watched her struggle to put one foot in front of the other, I found myself expecting her and urging her forward. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time, I hoped that she wouldn’t.
Finally she was the only runner left in sight. I sat on the edge of my seat and watched with respect and amazement as she pushed forward with strong determination through the last miles. When the finish line came into sight, the cheering crowds had long gone home. Yet she didn’t give up and crossed the line.
I don’t know this woman’s name, but that day she became a part of my life — a part I often depend on. For her, it wasn’t about beating the other runners or winning a prize. It was about finishing what she had set out to do. When I think things are too difficult or I get those “I-just-can’t-do-it,” I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.

B. Proud and determined.
C. Hard-working and responsible.
D. Strong-willed and honorable.
6. What has the author learnt from the woman?
A. Don’t depend on others when facing difficulties.
B. Nothing is too hard to accomplish if one is brave enough.
C. Those who have difficulty walking can also run a marathon.
D. It’s not winning but holding on to the end that really matters.
7. What could be the best title for the text?
A. The Last Runner
B. An Injured Stranger
C. An Unforgettable Event
D. The Annual Marathon

One way to prevent anxiety from getting out of control is to recognize its benefits. It is a mistake to think we can make better decisions if we keep our feelings under control. Instead, a mix of feelings like anxiety and logical thinking leads to sound decision-making. Many researches show that higher levels of anxiety can make us more likely to avoid risks in our decision-making. There is also evidence that anxiety can increase the attention you pay to relevant information.
Recent studies have shown that people who are anxious about their relationships tend to be better at recognizing people who tell lies and are more likely to raise the alarm when danger approaches.
In the real world though, it’s worth realizing that feeling anxious for a while is very common. It helps you communicate with others that you care about, and is also probably a sign that you are intelligent. At least two published studies have identified that people who score higher on measures of anxiety also tend to perform better on intelligence tests. This seems reasonable: If you’re a thinker, you are sure to be always thinking about the future.
The important thing is not to let your fear destroy your dreams. And don’t bury your head in the sand. Instead, act on your fears - do research as well as preparation. So rather than walk blindly into what you fear, why not meet challenges in full readiness?
There is no denying that when anxiety beats you, it is a serious problem. But you needn’t see it as your enemy. Anxiety is an important feeling, developed through evolution (进化). Listen to it and act on it. Then you can turn your nervousness into your advantage.
8. What can we infer about anxiety from paragraph 1?
A. It enables us to be more focused.
B. It stops us from thinking logically.
C. It makes us more willing to take risks.
D. It contributes to bad decision-making.
9. What can be learned about anxious people?
A. They sense danger in advance.
B. They score the highest in tests.
C. They tend to think about future.
D They prefer to interact with strangers.
10. How should we deal with anxiety in the author’s opinion?
A. By regarding it as our enemy.
B. By taking action to prevent it.
C. By making use of it properly.
D. By ignoring it completely.
11. What does the passage focus on?
A. Effective ways to prevent anxiety.
B. Unexpected benefits of anxiety.
C. Tips on how to keep a good mood.
D. Misunderstandings about anxiety.
A 9. C 10. C 11. B
根据第一段中“There is also evidence that anxiety can increase the attention you pay to relevant information. (也有证据表明,焦虑可以增加你对相关信息的注意力)”可知,焦虑能帮助我们集中注意力,故选A。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“At least two published studies have identified that people who score higher on measures of anxiety also tend to perform better on intelligence tests. This seems reasonable: If you’re a thinker, you are sure to be always thinking about the future. (至少有两项已发表的研究表明,在焦虑测试中得分较高的人在智力测试中也往往表现得更好。这似乎是合理的:如果你是一个思想家,你肯定总是在考虑未来)”可知,焦虑的人对未来思考更多,故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Anxiety is an important feeling, developed through evolution (进化). Listen to it and act on it. Then you can turn your nervousness into your advantage. (焦虑是一种重要的感觉,是在进化过程中形成的。倾听并采取行动。然后你就可以把紧张转化为优势)”可知,在作者看来我们应该倾听自己的焦虑且付出行动,将紧张转变为优势,即合理运用紧张,故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段作者指出“Many researches show that higher levels of anxiety can make us more likely to avoid risks in our decision-making. There is also evidence that anxiety can increase the attention you pay to relevant information. (多个研究表明焦虑可以让我们在决策中避免风险。同样也有证据表明焦虑可以提高你对相关信息的注意力)”可知,全文都是围绕焦虑的好处展开,故文章主要讲述焦虑带来的好处。故选B。
D
Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cathie Martin, a British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).
Antioxidants, also known as AOS, are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage. Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them. Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.
A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO. After adding two genes(基因) from a plant called snapdragon, Martin soon found her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS. Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be like. We need to see more experiments about it.
GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.
Even so, many people still have concerns about them. Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers.
Anyway, on September 7, 2022, the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health.
12. What makes purple tomatoes really special?
A. Their medical value. B. Their delicious flavor.
C. Their proper size. D. Their pleasant color.
13. What’s the author’s attitude to the test on the mice?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Opposed.
14. What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The environment affects GMO foods.
B. The customers do not like GMO foods.
C. GMO products are used to help farmers.
D. Scientists think GMO products are safe.
15. What’s mainly talked about in the text?
A. Different DNA can benefit plant growth.
B Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved.
C. Scientists are changing DNA of crops.
D. Human health depends on changed DNA.
A 13. B 14. D 15. B
根据第一段中“Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).(虽然颜色不同寻常,但现在这种特殊的西红柿已经获得了美国政府的批准,它含有很高的抗氧化剂)”以及第二段中“Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. (科学家认为,AOS可能有助于预防心脏病,并有助于对抗糖尿病等疾病。)”可知,紫色番茄中含有抗氧化剂,抗氧化剂能够有助于对抗糖尿病等疾病。故紫色番茄的特殊之处在于它的医用价值。故选A。
根据第三段中的“Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be the same. We need to see more experiments about it.”(虽然这是个好消息,但在老鼠身上进行的实验并不总是能预测对人类的影响是一样的。
第四段提到“But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.(转基因产品并不受消费者欢迎,许多人被这些食物不天然或不安全的想法吓到了。
标题“Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved.(转基因西红柿批准上市)”符合文意,故选B。

Mary and her little son Andy lived alone and led a hard life. They didn’t have much, but there was always food on the table-for Andy, at least.
To support the family, Mary did three jobs. It was tiring, but Mary didn’t give up. Each day when she finally got home, she’d bring Andy home from a kind neighbor, who attended to her boy for hours daily.
Years later when Andy was 15, Mary was still working hard. One morning she crazily looked for the house keys, worried about getting late for work. She had a long day ahead, but she didn’t even make it to her house’s front door. She tried to move the sofa to see if the keys had fallen behind it. At the time, Andy was preparing to go to school.
Suddenly, Mary fell due to long-term lack of sleep. And when she fell, her head hit the sofa’s edge, which caused her to faint immediately. So worried, Andy did everything he could to help his mom. Finally, he took her to hospital.
Hours later, Mary woke up, noticing Andy’s hand on her shoulder. The doctor brought her document for her to read. She soon knew why she was in hospital. And she knew the fall had reduced her sense of hearing to 20%. Mary couldn’t help crying. “What am I going to do now?” she thought as she looked at Andy. With tears in eyes, Andy said, “I love you, Mom!” And it saddened them both again because Mary could barely hear Andy’s words.
The doctor recommended wearing a hearing aid. It was a very expensive device. “Who has that kind of money?” Mary thought, feeling upset and hopeless.
But Andy wasn’t. “Mom has taken good care of me for years. It’s high time that I did something to try to repay her,” Andy thought. He was determined to take a part-time job to earn the money for the hearing aid. Since his academic performance was very good, he decided to work as a tutor for grade kids.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
First, he made advertisements.

One morning when Mary was still sleeping soundly, Andy put the hearing aid in her ear.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
First, he made advertisements. Then, he put them up in the neighborhood. Attracted, some parents invited him home. After an interview, they were content with Andy’s teaching ability and hired him. Thus, Andy’s schedule became so tight that he often didn’t get home until dinnertime. Andy kept it a secret from his mom. Finally, he was amazed he earned enough money. He immediately bought a hearing aid for his mother and studied the instructions.
One morning when Mary was still sleeping soundly. Andy put the hearing aid in her ear. Mary awakened to the sounds of birds’ singing and car horns. “Morning, Mom,” Andy said. Mary turned, finding Andy was sitting nearby, smiling. “Is there a hearing aid?” she asked in disbelief. Andy nodded and asked, “How does it feel?” Mary replied that it was incredible, with tears rolling down her cheeks. She was relieved that her son loved her so much.
