Prendick, a British scientist, has an accident at sea—and by chance finds himself n a mysterius island where Dr Mreau and his assistant Mntgmery are engaged in strange experiments f turning animals int humans.
Wells was a scial refrmer, and his nvels reflected (反映) his thughts and theries abut human sciety. Much f Wells' writing cncerns (either directly r indirectly) scial class, but Mreau deals with the thennewly advanced thery f evlutin (进化)—and then wrks t relate hw that thery influences man's belief in Gd. Wells smetimes mentined this in his nvels, but nwhere in his wrk is this line f thught mre clearly and specifically seen than here.
Smetimes Wells tries t influence his readers strngly, while n ther ccasins, he des it gently. But in The Island f Dr Mreau, Wells achieves a perfect balance f the tw extremes. It is an impressive achievement, and in this sense I cnsider Mreau pssibly the best f Wells' wrks. The nvel is as interesting fr the stry it tells as it is fr its themes that are still very imprtant tday.
Mreau is nt as hrrific as Wells' many ther nvels—he ften included hrrr and cruelty in his science fictin. Still, this is nt a bk that yu can read and then put away: it stays in yur mind in a mst disturbing way. Strngly recmmended.
