Dramatic progress has been witnessed in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which benefits from those great contributions some ancient famous doctors made ant some experience they accumulated. The following three stand out among the ancient famous doctors.
    Hua Tuo
Hua Tuo (145 — 208), famous physician of the late Eastern Han dynasty, also named Fu, was born at Qiao County in Peiguo (now Bozhou, Anhui Province). He led a simple life, away from fame and fortune. He would rather become a traveling physician for ordinary people.
Hua Tuo was an expert in several medical fields, such as internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics and acupuncture. He was the first person to perform surgery with the aid of anesthesia (by applying Ma Fei San, a herbal anesthetic he invented) some 1,600 years before Europeans did.
    Zhang Zhongjing
Zhang Zhongjing (150 — 219), also known as Zhang Ji, was one of the most distinguished Chinese physicians during the later years of the Eastern Han dynasty. He lived in today’s Nanyang in Henan Province. He was known as the “medical sage” by later generations due to his outstanding contributions to TCM.
During his time, with warlords (军阀) fighting for their own territories, many people were infected with fertility, an illness caused by fever. Zhang’s family was no exception. The experience stimulated his motivation in medicine. He learned medicine by studying from his town’s fellow Zhan Bozu, absorbing previous medicinal literature, collecting many prescriptions; and finally writing the medical masterpiece Shanghan Zabing Lun. Unfortunately shortly after its publication the book was lost during wartime.
    Li Shizhen
Li Shizhen (1518 — 1593) was a famous medical scientist the Ming dynasty. He loved medicine from an early age and succeeded his ancestors as a doctor. He not only paid attention to accumulating experience in curing diseases, but also visited the famous mountains where medicinal materials were produced.
On this basis, it took 27 years to compile (编著) the pharmaceutical masterpiece, Compendium of Materia Medica, which is known as the “Encyclopedia of Ancient China” and has made an important contribution to the development of classical medicine China.

Back in 2020: One day, I was scheduling appointments in the office; the next, I broke my leg and had to stay in bed. Over time, I grew sick of video conferencing and TV marathons, and started searching for something new to fill the long and restless days.
A headline on a website caught my eyes: “This Weaving Loom (织布机) Saved Me When All My Previous Hobbies Disappeared.” This was the universe speaking to me. I immediately bought all the things recommended—a small loom, a few colors of threads (线) and a weaving book.
My first weaving looked...not great. I skipped the book and free-styled a pink-and-white cloth to hang on my apartment door. It started off OK; I strung the loom successfully and figured out how to slide the threaded needle over and under the backbone of the cloth.
Then, mistake after mistake, I pulled the thread way too tight, making the sides curve in. There were lots of gaps, where I could see the white threads underneath the colored ones. I couldn’t make the long fringe (穗) at the bottom. In a fit of frustration, I left it a mess.
Humbled by my pride, I opened the weaving book. I learned how to get my edges straight and my ends neat. I figured out how to sew backs onto cloths, stuff them with cotton and make colorful pillows to display on my sofa. Soon I started making some for my families and friends. I even saved up money to buy a 4-by-4-foot loom, where I worked on bigger objects.
I was officially taken with it. Actually, I’ve never been good at anything that requires hand-eye-brain cooperation. But weaving, somehow, feels different. It requires the same steps repeated over again and encourages you to lose yourself in the process. Every time I pick up my loom, my brain quiets down; as my needle slips between threads, I ground myself. I’ve never loved a hobby like this.
24.Why did the author buy a loom?
A.To pass the time. B.To try out an idea. C.To escape from work. D.To replace marathons.
25.What did the author think of her first weaving?
    A.Boring. B.Pleasing. C.Disappointing. D.Encouraging.
26.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.The value of the weaving book. B.The advice for weaving beginners.
C.The attitude towards previous mistakes. D.The process of growing love for weaving.
27.What does the author seem to love about weaving?
A.It is a means to make a living. B.It is a craft with calming quality.
C.It is a way to keep traditions alive. D.It is a practice for human connection.

A study published recently shows that tomato fruits are able to transmit alerts to their mother plant when attacked by caterpillars.
Plants have a large number of chemical and hormonal signaling pathways, which are generally transmitted through the sap (树液). Given the fact that fruits just hang from the main plant before ultimately falling off and sap typically only runs from the plant to the fruit — not back and forth between the two — it has long been unclear whether or not fruits can transmit information to the plant.
To address that question, scientists at Brazil’s Federal University of Pelotas placed tomato plants in a Faraday cage. Electrodes (电极) were attached to the ends of the plants’ branches at the points where they connected to the fruits. Then they measured electrical responses within the branches before, during and after a 24-hour period in which the fruits were attacked by caterpillars. Machine-learning-based algorithms were used to identify patterns in the signals.
It was found that there was a “clear difference” between the signals before and after caterpillar attacks. Additionally. defensive biochemical responses were observed throughout the plants’ bodies, suggesting that they had been triggered by signals sent by the fruits. There searchers gave the following explanation. The tomato fruit, sensing a nearby insect, released electrical signals to reach the rest of the plant. These warnings impulses were received by the main plant and as a result, the rest of the plant got prepared to fight off the unwanted invaders. The tomato fruit made sure that the plant produced chemicals that were unpleasant to taste, so that hungry caterpillars stayed off the fruit.
The scientists now plan on investigating whether other fruiting plants behave in the same manner as tomatoes, and whether their fruits respond to threats other than insects. They believe understanding how the plant interacts with its fruits, and the fruits among themselves, may bring insights into how to make use of this communication for enhancing fruit quality, resistance to pests and shelf life after harvest.

A new method of lie detection shows that lie tellers who are made to multi-task while being interviewed are easier to spot. The extra brain power needed to concentrate on a secondary task other than lying was particularly challenging.
Professor Aldert Vriji from the University of Portsmouth designed an experiment to identify lie tellers. The 164 participants in the experiment were first asked to give their levels of support or opposition about various societal topics that were in the news. They were then given a truth or lie condition by chance and interviewed about the three topics that they felt most strongly about. Truth tellers were instructed to report their true opinions while lie tellers were instructed to lie about their opinions during the interviews.
For the secondary task, participants were given a seven-digit (数字) car number and instructed to recall it back to the interviewer. Half of them received additional instructions that if they could not remember the car number during the interview, they may be asked to write down their opinions after the interview.
Participants were given the opportunity to prepare themselves for the interview and were told it was important to come across as convincing as possible during the interviews — which was incentivized by being entered into a prize draw.
The results showed that lie tellers’ stories sounded less reasonable and less clear than truth tellers’ stories, particularly when lie tellers were given the secondary task and told that it was important.
“The pattern of result suggests that the introduction of secondary tasks in an interview could help lie detection but such tasks need to be introduced carefully. It seems that a secondary task will only be effective if lie tellers do not neglect it. This can be achieved by either telling interviewees that the secondary task is important, or by introducing one that cannot be neglected,’’ said Professor Vriji.
32.What can we learn about participants in the experiment?
A.Some truth tellers gave false opinions in the interview.
B.Not all participants knew the importance of the secondary task.
C.Participants didn’t express opinions about news topics.
D.Participants chose a truth or lie condition by themselves.
33.What does the underlined word “incentivized” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A.Motivated. B.Chosen. C.Completed. D.Corrected.
34.On what condition was the secondary task effective in the experiment?
    A.When participants took it seriously.
B.When participants had strong brain power.
C.When participants paid little attention to it.
D.When participants had the chance to prepare.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Interviewing Lie Tellers. B.Covering up the Truth.
C.Challenging a Secondary Task. D.Exposing Liars by Distraction.

    第二节 七选五(2.5*5=12.5分)
Everyone knows about straight-A students. In fact, hard work isn’t the whole story behind their academic success. Many straight-A students actually put in fewer hours of homework time than their low-scoring classmates. 36 .
    Set priorities.
Top students bear no breaks on study time. Once the books are open or the computer is booted up, phone calls go unanswered, TV shows unwatched, and snacks ignored. Study is business; business comes before recreation.
    37 .
Paul Melendres, a straight-A freshman from New Mexico, keeps two folders (文件夹) — one for the day’s assignments, another for papers completed and graded. Melendres’ methods have actually proven effective. Even students who don’t have a private study area remain organized. A bag or drawer keeps essential supplies together and cuts down time-wasting searches.
    Clean up your act.
Neat papers are likely to get higher grades than sloppy ones. “The student who turns in a neat paper,” says Claude Olney, an Arizona State University business professor, “is already on the way to an A.It’s like being served a cheeseburger. 38 , you can’t believe it tastes good if it’s presented on a dirty plate.”
    Speak up.
“ 39 , I asked him to repeat it,” says Christopher Campbell. Class participation goes beyond merely asking questions, though. It’s a matter of showing intellectual curiosity. “I don’t want to memorize information for tests only,” says Campell. “Better grades come from better understanding.”
    Test yourself.
As part of her note-taking, Domenica Roman emphasizes points she thinks may be covered during exams. Later she designs tentative (试验性的) test questions based on those points and gives herself a written examination before test day. “If I can’t answer the questions satisfactorily, 40 ,” she says.
    A.Get organized
    B.Schedule your time
C.I will go back and review
D.No matter how good it really is
E.If I don’t understand what my teacher is explaining
F.Here are some secrets of the young study champions
G.Here we make some suggestions on how to study anytime

When I was ten years old, I lived with my family in a small house in rural South Jersey. I often accompanied my mother to the A&P to buy goods. Without a car, we walked, and I would help her carry the bags.
My mother had to shop very carefully, as she was a waitress, and the money she earned could only raise the family. One day. while she was waiting in line to pay for the goods, a promotional (促销的) display for the World Book“ Encyclopedia (百科全书)” caught my eye. The books were beautifully cream-colored and you could buy one only with ninety-nine cents if you had already had a ten-dollar purchase.
All I could think of while shopping was the book. I stood at the check-out counter with my mother, holding my breath as the cashier rang up the items. It came to over eleven dollars. My mother took out a five, and a handful of change. As she was counting out the money, I somehow found the courage to ask for the encyclopedia. “Could we get one?” I said, showing her the display. “It’s only ninety-nine cents.”
I did not understand my mother’s increasing anxiety: she did not have enough change and had to give up a large can of peas to pay the amount. “Not now, Patricia,” she said seriously. “Today is not a good day.” I packed the goods and followed her home, upset.
The next Saturday, my mother gave me a dollar and sent me to the A&P alone. Two bottles of milk and a loaf of bread--that’s what a dollar in 1957. I went straight to the World Book display. There was only one encyclopedia left, which I placed in my cart. I didn’t need a cart, but took one so I could read as I went up and down the aisles (过道). A lot of time went by and I knew I had to leave, but I couldn’t bear to part with the book. With no security guard in sight, I, quickly, put it inside my shirt and zipped (扣上拉链) up my jacket. My heart beating rapidly, I headed to check out. I paid the dollar for the three items and was about to leave when I felt a heavy tap on my shoulder. It was a big security guard. “You stole something. You will be searched.” He announced. Horrified, I slid the book out from inside the shirt and handed it over. “An encyclopedia?” he asked, somewhat surprised. “Yes.” I whispered, trembling. “Why didn’t you ask your parents to buy it?” “I did, but they didn’t have the money.” With s sigh, he made me promise to tell my parents about wrongdoing and then let me leave.
Back home, I told my mother I had promised the security guard. Unexpectedly, she didn’t explode as usual. She fell silent, looking extremely anxious. Consumed with guilt, I gathered my courage, apologized and promised that it would never ever happen again. “All will be ok!” said my mother, wrapping me in her arms. Then she told me that she would go to the A&P to tell the security guard I had admitted and that I should play outside. Hours later, when I was back home, I noticed a bag with my name on it. I opened it and packed inside was the world book Encyclopedia.
