Im an immigrant(移民)from China, and I found that in Quebec I had to learn French, which was a totally strange language to me. After waiting for half a month, I received a letter from my school, St-Luc, and began leaning French in a welcome class, which is a class for new immigrants. Even though French was rather hard for me to speak and to understand, I began my secondary five studies the next year.

The first few days were terrible, especially the first class of the first day. Although I had been in St-Luc for one year, I still didn’t know much about the school. The first problem that I had was finding my classroom. Luckily, I met a girl who was in my French class and my chemistry class.

After the bell rang, the teacher, Mme. Zarif, began her class. First, she introduced herself to everyone and then gave us the course outline(纲要) for the entire year. During her class, everyone laughed many times. Although I could only understand a little bit, I could tell that she was very funny.

At the end of her speech, to make sure that we didnt forget what we had learned in secondary four, Mme. Zarif gave us a paper with many symbols of elements(元素) on it and asked us to write their names in French. I was shocked when I received the paper. Honestly, the only symbol I knew was O. After having stared at the paper for a few minutes, gave up and raised my hand. The teacher came, and I told her that I didn't know anything

"You have forgotten everything already?" she said in a surprised tone. "No,"I answered,"I have never learned them in French before. I am from the welcome class."" Oh," the teacher said with a look of understanding. "Come here after school. I will teach them to you."

I agreed. Finally, I handed in the paper with only one answer on it. On the whole, my first day of secondary five was a little embarrassing but, at the same time, interesting.

    4. What's the author's first problem on his first day of secondary five?

    A. Finding his classroom.      B. Introducing himself.

    C. Understanding French.  D. Taking an exam.

    5. What does the author think of Mme. Zarif?

    A. Quiet. B. Energetic. C. Brave. D. Humorous.

    6. Why did the author fail to finish writing chemical elements?

    A. He forgot to revise chemistry.         B. He couldn't write French at all.

    C. He didn’t concentrate on the lesson.   D. He didn't learn them in French.

    7. What's the best title of the text?

    A. A Welcome Class      B. My French Teacher

    C. My First Chemistry Class D. An Immigrant From China

    C

Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is hanging. There are some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the lnternet-but in forms very different to what we accept and recognize as English today.

That's because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers. particularly on the Internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don't have to worry about their accent(口音).

Users of Facebook already socialize in a number of different “Englishes”including Indian English, Spanish English and Korean English. While these different styles have long existed within their cultures, they're now expanding and commingling online. Technology companies are introducing newly-developed English words with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not already in the English dictionary. And most large companies have English websites, while smaller businesses are learning that they need a common language-English-to reach global customers.

The increasing popularity of the Internet allows more languages to develop quickly.

Most people actually speak several languages-it’s less common to only speak one, ”says Mr. Munro. “English has taken its place as the world’s common language, but it’s not pushing out other languages.”Instead, other languages are pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new.

    8. What does the text mainly talk about?

    A. English is a common language around the world.

    B. There are now many different language styles.

    C. English language is developing with the Internet.

    D. Smaller businesses are learning a common language.

    9. What can we learn about online communication according to Para. 2?

    A. People don't need to spell exactly B. Grammar is very important.

    C. People do care about their accent. D. Most English speakers are native speakers.

    10. What can we infer from the text?

    A. We can only communicate online in English.

    B. It’s impossible to find all the English words in the dictionary.

    C. Some technology companies start to publish English dictionaries.

    D. Smaller businesses are not allowed to have English websites.

    11. What can we learn from what Mr. Munro said?

    A. The other languages are enriching English.

    B. One can’t live well without speaking several languages.

    C. English will become the only language in the world.

    D. Chinese used to be the world’s common language.

Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps older people company and helps them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received 3 million dollars from the National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or AI, to Hasbro's "Joy for All "robotic cat.

The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced at over1,000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a"companion"(陪伴)for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing more abilities for the cat. Researchers are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the older people to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars.

It is an idea that has appealed(有吸引力)to Jeanne Elliot. Her 93- year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia(痴呆).The Joy for All cat that Elliot bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her relaxed while Elliot is at work. Elliot said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she walks would be greater.

The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people.

    12. What's the purpose of the project?

    A. To reduce the pain of the elderly        B. To increase the sales of a medicine

    C. To help make the robotic cat smarter.    D. To invent a robotic cat for the elderly

    13. What can we know about the cat?

    A. It will be on sale in two years.        B. It may be cheaper in the future

    C. It will have much simpler abilities    D. It can tell the activities the elderly need.

    14. What does the example in Paragraph 3 show?

    A. The cat gives much help to the elderly

    B. The cat works well to talk with the patient.

    C. The cat is designed to satisfy patients’needs.

    D. The cat makes the dementia patient less painful

    15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A. The cat will communicate like human beings.

    B. A talking cat is quite popular among the elderly

    C. Feelings of sadness among the elderly are unavoidable.

    D. The feeling of being needed is important to the elderly.

    第二节(5小题;每小题3,满分15)

    阅读下面短文,从选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

As an English learner, you often feel anxious when you have to speak English in front of others. 16   Here are some solutions to help you build confidence in speaking English.

Adopt a practice and repetition routine(常规).When something becomes natural to you, you begin to feel confident of doing it. And the only way you can arrive at thisnaturalway of doing things is through practice and repetition. 17   So write down what you may talk about and then practise saying it aloud and repeatedly before an English meeting.

18   You may lose confidence when your spoken English is misunderstood by listeners. In most cases, it’s because the listeners are not used to your accent or you speak too fast. There is no doubt that speaking slowly is easy to achieve.

Don’t run away from uncomfortable situations. It is natural for any human being to avoid uncomfortable situations when possible, but you will build your confidence in the uncomfortable zones.19

All in all, learning to speak English confidently doesn’t happen overnight. 20  As the saying goes, “No pains, no              gains.”As long as you make enough efforts, you will surely improve your spoken English, and then you will naturally become confident of speaking English in front of others.

    A. Purposely speak more slowly.

    B. Try to understand your listeners.

    C. It takes time and you need to make continuous efforts.

    D. Well, it’s the same principle as speaking English confidently.

    E. It is common to make some mistakes when you speak English.

    F. However, going from an unconfident speaker to a confident one is possible.

    G. The secret is to be fully prepared, and then you will overcome the uncomfortable situations.

    第二节 读后续写(满分25)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.

“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”

Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once again carefully when Dad drove him to school.

At last, it was time for the students to have the test. “Responsibility,” Mr.White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently

“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.

“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.

Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”

Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter's was an English-Chinese dictionary---the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.

After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B- U-S-I-O-N," he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.

What am I to do?” Peter said to himself.“I expect my classmates to think I'm a master in spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I'll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example of telling a lie.”

Staring at the full marks which were written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We should be an honest person.”

    注意: 续写词数应为150左右。

    Paragraph 1:

    Slowly, Peter raised his hand.

    Paragraph 2:

Peter looked around and found many of his classmates were smiling at him.
