Climate forecast for 2050: cold London will be hot and dry like Barcelona, wet
Seattle will be like drier San Francisco, and Washington D. C. will be more like
today's Nashville but with even greater changes in temperatures.
“We wanted to know what the climate will be for 520 major cities in 2050,” said
Tom Crowther, a researcher at ETH Zürich. To show their findings the Crowther Lab
in Switzerland created a map that pairs one city's future climate conditions with
current ones. For example, Minneapolis in 2050 will be more like Kansas City, with
Minneapolis's warmest month shooting up from around 80 degrees Fahrenheit on
average to more than 90° F in 2050. Generally speaking, cities in the northern half of
the earth will have the climates cities more than 620 miles to their south have today,
he said.
There are no good pairings for more than 22 percent of the world's major cities —
those with one million or more people now, researchers found. Those 115 cities,
including Washington and 16 other U.S. cities, will have unprecedented (前所未有的)
climate conditions by 2050 compared to what they saw in 2000, the baseline for the
study. That doesn't mean that Washington will be hotter than Riyadh, Saudi Arabia,
today. It means that there is no current match for the wide climate changes in
temperatures and rainfall the city will experience, said Crowther. Most of the 115
cities that will experience “novel” climates are in the tropics (热带地区) and include
cities like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Rangoon, and Singapore. Changes in tropical cities
will be less in terms of temperature increases, but will have more rain.
The study talked about climate in ways that will be more meaningful to the public
and city planners. Knowing that London's climate will be like Barcelona's — which
has experienced serious droughts requiring $25 million to buy drinking water from
other countries in 2008 — can help planners prepare for what's coming.
24. What will Seattle's climate be like in 2050?
A. It will be less wet.
B. It will be cold but dry.
C. It will be drier than today's San Francisco.
D. It will be the same as today's Washington D.C.
25. What is the Crowther Lab trying to do?
A. To mark 520 major cities on a map.
B. To show a city's future climate using a current city.
C. To put today's cities with similar climates in pairs.
D. To compare the northern half of the earth with the southern half.
26. Which city's temperature will change less from now to 2050?
A. Jakarta.
B. Riyadh.
C. Minneapolis.
D. Kansas City.
27. What's the importance of the study?
A. Get city planners to think ahead.
B. Help Barcelona out of difficulty.
C. Make the public realize the danger.
D. Stop London's situation from getting worse
C
In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics(策略).
One tactic involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food(垃圾食品)later in their trip. In department stores, section is generally next to the women's cosmetics(化妆品) section:while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over cosmetics they might want to try later.
Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers' senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wine went up.
When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decision in the first few second upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the poll through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $10 million houses.
28. Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section?________
A. To save customers times. B. To show they are high quality foods.
C. To help sell junk food. D. To sell them at discount prices.
29. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy?________
A. Opening the store early in the morning.
B. Displaying British wines next to French ones.
C. Inviting customers to play music.
D. Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread.
30. What is the California builder's story intended to prove?________
A. The house structure is a key factor customers consider.
B. The more costly the house is, the better it sells.
C. An ocean view is much to the customers' taste.
D. A good first impression increases sales.
31. What is the main purpose of the passage?________
A. To explain how businesses turn people into their customers.
B. To introduces how businesses have grown from the past.
C. To report researches on customer behavior.
D. To show dishonest business practices.

In the mid-1990s, Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind. A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book, Chasing the Sea:Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea. It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way:Rustam, his translator, a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California, Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.
This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand, Mr. Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana, he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼)followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.
Mr. Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American, as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book, or even a piece of reportage. Whatever it is, the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.
32. What made Mr. Bissell return to Uzbekistan?________
A. His friends' invitation. B. His interest in the country.
C. His love for teaching. D. His desire to regain health.
33. What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 2 refer to?________
A. Developing a serious mental disease.
B. Taking a guided tour in Central Asia.
C. Working as a volunteer in Uzbekistan.
D. Writing an article about the Aral Sea.
34. Which of the following best describes Mr Bissell's road trip in Uzbekistan?________
A. Romantic. B. Eventful. C. Pleasant. D. Dangerous.
35. What is the purpose of this text?________
A. To introduce a book.
B. To explain a cultural phenomenon.
C. To remember a writer.

John and Nancy were left with their grandmother Linda after their mom was hospitalized for illness. They were curious about when they could finally see their mom. “The hospital won’t allow her to leave until all of her medical bills are settled. I have given your mom all I could, but there’s still a large amount that we need to pay off,” Linda explained. John and Nancy missed their mom a lot and wanted her to come back home as soon as possible.
“What if we put up a lemonade stand (摊位), John?” Nancy asked her older brother. “We can pick the lemons from the garden and make fresh juice out of them,” she suggested. Her brother smiled, “That’s a great idea, Nancy!” From then on, John and Nancy stayed outside the entire afternoon after school selling lemonade. A week went by, they only managed to earn ten dollars.
On Saturday morning, they sat on the side of the yard, looking worried. After a couple of seconds, their silent pondering (沉思) was interrupted by loud police sirens. “Hey, fellas!” one of the policemen greeted. “My colleague Jacob said that his neighbor had a lemonade stand in front of their yard.” The two children nodded. “I’m sorry, officer. But I didn’t think there would be anything wrong with that. Besides, we didn’t earn a lot,” John tried to explain.
“Don’t worry. You’re not in trouble. I bought a cup of it from you two the other day, remember? I asked why you were selling lemonade, and you told me it was to raise funds to get your mom out of the hospital,” Jacob interrupted upon seeing John and Nancy looked nervous.
“I told my friends over here, and we decided we wanted to help. Come to the back of the police car, and we have something to show you,” Jacob told the kids. They slowly made their way to the back of one of the police cars and saw a nicely-painted wooden lemonade stand. “That’s beautiful!” Nancy said in surprise.

第四部分 写作 第一节 参考范文:
Dear Jerry,
Aimed at enriching students’ school life, a tug-of-war competition was held last Friday on our playground.
Bathed in sunshine, our class competed fiercely against Class 3, with the audience cheering wildly. The moment the referee blew the whistle, both teams tried to pull back as hard as they could. Although we won the first round, the other team didn’t lose heart and won the second round. The competition was filled with excitement and fun, ending in a draw.
Not only did the competition help relieve our pressure from the heavy academic load, but it also strengthened our relationship with others.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
“There’s a big food festival downtown today, and we got you a stand.” Jacob said. “Why not go there and give it a shot?” He continued to ask the kids, who could barely contain their excitement and jumped up with wide joy. “Yes, officers!” they exclaimed, a big smile broadening from ear to ear. It was not long before all the lemonade was gathered. The officers soon set up the lemonade stand and uploaded a post introducing their experience, which went viral and caused quite a stir in the neighbourhood. Grandma and the two kids were surprised to see their stand packed solid with people attracted by lemonade.
Paragraph 2:
There was a large crowd eager to buy lemonade. By the end of that day, the children were shocked to see that apart from the money raised, they also received loads of cards with warm and encouraging words. Grandma took the cards with trembling hands, cradling them in arms with tears brimming in her eyes. As soon as their mom was discharged from the hospital, they visited the police station and thanked the officers for their generosity and kindness. John and Nancy hugged Jacob tightly, knowing that they would never forget what they had been through and would cherish the love for good.
听力材料
Text 1 M: What do you like to watch on TV?
W: I love quiz shows and talk shows. What about you?
M: I like nature movies and situation comedies.
W: I’m glad you don’t like watching documentaries.
Text 2 M: I’m going out to lunch. Do you need anything while I’m out?
W: Yes, if you pass a convenience store, get me some chocolate — a Snickers bar, please.
Text 3 W: What are you going to do tomorrow?
M: It depends. If it’s fine, I’ll go fishing. And if it rains, I’ll stay indoors and do some writing. What about you?
W: I am not sure yet.
Text 4 M: What time do you think would be OK for us to watch the match?
W: How about 7:00?
M: Can we make it 30 minutes later? Because I have a meeting at 7:00. The match begins at 8:00.
W: No problem.
Text 5 M: Where to, Miss?
W: Please drop me off at the King’s Department Store.
M: On the west side?
W: No, the east side, near the post office.
Text 6 M: Sarah, did you remember to go to the market on the way?
W: Oh no, I forgot. But why do I need to go again?
M: To get one of those old Rock-Clock records for Fred’s birthday.
W: OK, I bet I’ll get lost trying to find the market.
M: Well, you need to walk past Causeway Inn to the bus stop, catch the bus to Notting-Hill station and then the train to South City. It should take about an hour this time of day.
W: OK, but here’s one small problem. Where’s Causeway Inn?
M: Oh Sarah! Don’t you know anything? The Causeway Inn is about 100 meters down this street.
W: Oh, good! That should be easy to find. Thanks. I’ll be back soon.
Text 7 W: Hi, Jack. How was your vacation?
M: Hey, Sunny. It was pretty good. I had to study a lot, though.
W: Why? Did your teachers give you a lot of summer homework?
M: No, it’s not that. Ms. Wellington is going to be one of my teachers this year.
W: I’ve never been in her class. Is she tough?
M: Tough? She’s one of the strictest teachers in our school.
W: How do you know?
M: I had one of her classes last year. She gave us so much work that it was really hard to get it all done.
W: So were you studying over the vacation to get a head start?
M: That’s exactly right. I just hope I did enough.
Text 8 M: I’d like to add some Chinese traditional styles in the decoration of my new house.
W: That’s great! I like this style very much. And I think if you want to show the Chinese style, you should use the red color. It is the most representative color in China, and sometimes it is called “Chinese Red”.
M: Oh, yes, I agree with you. And as for the door and the windows, I also like to use lattice. I think it is the most important style of Chinese decorating.
W: Yes. I think you have a good understanding of the Chinese style. And I suggest you’d better hang two Chinese landscape paintings.
M: Oh, that’s a good idea. I will buy them in the afternoon. And I’d like to paint the walls again and buy a new sofa.
W: What color do you want to paint?
M: I don’t know exactly, but I’d like to use fresh colors. I think these colors look vivid.
Text 9 W: Why don’t you sit down? Now, there are several questions I must ask you if you don’t mind.
M: Not at all. Go ahead.
W: What is the purpose of your visit to the States?
M: I’m going to attend a conference on air pollution.
W: When and where is this conference being held?
M: It’s being held in the first two weeks of February at the University of Stanford in California.
W: Who will pay your expenses?
M: The University of Stanford. Here is the official letter of invitation.
W: I see. Fine. When do you want to go?
M: I’d like to leave on January 15th if my passport is ready by then.
W: That shouldn’t be difficult. Why don’t you phone me around January 10th? I should be able to give you an answer then.
M: Thank you.
Text 10 M: OK. Good morning, everyone. Now I’m going to talk about technology and learning. First of all, let’s talk about the Internet. There are several ways you can use to improve your English. You can read, listen and write.
Firstly, writing practice is good for your learning. On the Internet there are two places where you can write — message boards and live chat rooms. Live chat rooms are great for improving your fluency, because you have to write quickly. People don’t want to wait too long to hear your response. A message board is good for both fluency and accuracy because you can think and prepare before you write.
Also, the Internet is a good place to practice your listening. The Internet may be better than the radio as you can listen again and again. You should visit a good news site, such as the BBC. BBC radio is an incredible resource. The ability to listen repeatedly, and to pause, allows you to put into practice the advice I gave in the reading and listening skills section. In order to improve your listening, you have to be an active listener: make notes; try to write down the main points and new vocabulary.
Finally, visit the website for the textbook. There are extra practice exercises and reading materials. It also offers learners special message boards. OK. That’s all for today. Thank you for listening
