A small accident led t prfund changes in the life f Yang Li, an artisan (手艺人), wh is frm the Mia ethnic grup. In 201l, Yang, frm Tngren city in Guizhu prvince, created leaf vein (脉络) embridery (刺绣) three mnths after a leaf cut her hand.
The wrk is a perfect cmbinatin f traditinal embridery patterns and the natural textures (纹理) f the leaves. It has a unique aesthetic appeal f traditinal embridery matched with the characteristics f cntemprary craftsmanship.
As a native Mia wman with an inbrn lve f embridery, Yang pened a flk culture prducts shp with her sister in 2011. “Peple are becming less familiar with traditinal handicrafts, and I want t cntribute all I can t change this situatin.” Yang says. At first, the small shp did nt earn a significant incme as there were many similar prducts n the market. She gradually realized that it was imprtant t establish her wn brand and launch prducts with distinct features.
That’s when she was inspired by the cut. In July 2011, Yang accidentally cut her hand n a thrny leaf when she was hiking in Fanjing Muntain. A bld idea came int her head: “There are leaf-vein bkmarks and leaf-vein paintings. Why has nbdy created leaf-vein embrider yet?”
Obviusly, the reasn behind this is that embridering n leaves requires delicate skills that few pssess. The biggest technical challenge Yang faced was imprving the flexibility f the leaves and making them as sft as clth. On Oct 16, a day she will never frget, Yang finally created a shiny, thin and unbreakable piece f leaf vein. Her idea f leaf-vein embridery came t cmpletin after hundreds f experiments.

The climate crisis may lead the human race t shrink in size, as mammals with smaller frames appear better able t deal with rising glbal temperatures, a leading fssil expert has said.

Writing in The Rise and Reign f the Mammals, Brusatte ntes that animals in warmer parts f the wrld tday are ften smaller than thse in clder areas, an eclgical principle knwn as Bergmann’s rule. “The reasns are nt entirely understd, but it is prbably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area relative t their vlume than plumper animals and can thus better shed (去除) excess heat.” he writes.
Brusatte said that becming smaller was “a cmmn way that mammals deal with climate change”. He added,“That’s nt t say every species f mammal wuld get smaller, but it seems t be a cmmn survival trick f mammals when temperatures spike pretty quickly, which des raise the questin: if temperatures d spike really quickly, might humans get smaller?
