Hilltop Pub&Grill
Hilltop Pub&Grill first opened in the 1980s and took the Stevens Point community by storm with its delicious food and unique decoration style. Its fried fish are beloved due to the use of “high-quality North Atlantic fish, with a light beer batter (面糊)”.

Molski feels that the pub’s four special batter choices and other fish specials are what help make it an area landmark.
Two Harps Pub

Ever since I graduated from high school I've worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer. However, making the transformation between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be unacceptable, getting to a factory by 6 o'clock each morning is suffering. My friends never seem to understand why I'm so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.
There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight. Issues like being laid off and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working 12-hour shifts in a factory, the other options have become only too clear. " This job pays well, but it's hell on the body, " said one co-worker. " Study hard and keep reading. " she added. When I'm back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale now ring true.
My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.
24.What does the author think of his summer holiday?
A.It was a relief from his hard work at school.
B.It brought him nothing but suffering.
C.It was no holiday for him at all.
D.It offered him a chance to make more friends.
25.What can we infer about most college students?
A.They think too highly of themselves.
B.They are confident when they work.
C.They do better in the real world.
D.They are expert at handling machines.
26.What is the biggest pressure for blue-collar workers?
A.A low income B.Less break
C.An unstable location D.The lack of security
27.How did the working experiences change the author?
A.He became responsible for his work.
B.He came to appreciate his college education.
C.He began to respect blue-collar workers.
D.He learned to be more practical at work.
C
US author Henry Rollins once wrote: “Loneliness adds beauty to life. It puts a special burn on sunsets and makes night air smell better.” Indeed, in the eyes of artists, loneliness never seems to go out of style. There are paintings that portray loneliness, songs that are inspired by loneliness, and many works of literature that center around this theme.
In the eyes of UK economist Rachel Reeves, however, loneliness is far from romantic. Instead, it’s a “giant evil” that’s become a serious problem in the country.
So just how serious is it? On Jan 17, UK Prime Minister Theresa May appointed politician Tracey Crouch as the country’s very first “Minister for Loneliness”. Her job is to tackle the loneliness that the country’s been feeling - a problem which, according to UK government research, is affecting more than 9 million people in the country, and is more harmful to one’s physical and mental health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
And the problem hasn’t just appeared recently. Back in 2014, the UK was given the title of the “loneliness capital of Europe” by The Telegraph. A survey carried out by the newspaper found that British people were less likely to get to know their neighbors or build strong relationships with people than those from other European countries.
“There is something British about wanting to deal with problems yourself,” Christian Guy, director of the Centre for Social Justice think-tank (智囊团), told The Telegraph.
But this doesn’t mean that the problem only affects Britons. In fact, we’re all suffering from loneliness now more than ever, in spite of most of the world now having access to the internet, which has enabled us to be more connected than ever.
What we need, according to Kim Leadbetter, sister of the late UK politician Jo Cox, is to have “proper human connections”. “Our lives nowadays are so busy. We spend the vast majority of our time on our phones, on our laptops. We need to press pause on that and actually sit down and speak to human beings,” Leadbetter said at an event last year.
But the first steps toward fighting this problem are to accept its existence and not be ashamed or intimidated (吓倒) by it. After all, without loneliness, many beautiful paintings, songs, and literary works wouldn’t even exist. And “evil” or not, being lonely is simply part of the experience of being human.
28.What can we learn about the UK’s loneliness problem?
A.The government is working to solve the problem.
B.More than half of British people suffer from loneliness.
C.The UK became the loneliest country in the world in 2014.
D.British people communicate less with their neighbors than ever.
29.According to the text, social loneliness _______.
A.is mainly caused by the wide use of the internet
B.didn’t attract the public’s attention until recently
C.has become a problem worldwide
D.does more harm mentally than physically
30.What does Leadbetter suggest doing to cope with loneliness?
A.Making more phone calls to our friends.
B.Stopping the use of electronic products.
C.Accepting its existence calmly.
D.Interacting with the people around us face to face more often.
31.Which of the following would the author probably agree with?
A.Loneliness is a giant evil of society.
B.Only artists can appreciate the beauty of loneliness.
C.Loneliness is just a normal part of our life.
D.It is hard to find a solution to social loneliness.
D
It is not uncommon for people to say they have no sense of direction. The sense of direction represents the ability to find one’s way. In other words, it is about getting from point A to point B without a hitch. The journey begins with determining the initial position using landmarks in the environment. It’s really about choosing a route and following it. It is also a question of testing that this same route is the correct one, with the mental representation of space or the help of tools such as maps. Finally, the ability to identify the point of arrival is obviously very important.
In a study published in 2009, scientist Giuseppe Iaria, a scientist of the University of Calgary (Canada), who specializes cognitive neural (认知神经) networks indicated that people lacking a sense of direction have a special condition: Developmental Topographical Disorientation (DTD).
The sense of direction requires large neural networks for proper functioning, according to the expert. However, the fact is that a majority of people are unable to put a map in their head while on the move. In her book Mind in Motion (2019), Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Stanford University (USA) Barbara Tversky explains how most people do it.
She introduces a combination of methods. It’ a mix of turn-by-turn directions, bird’s-eye views and general information in the form of maps. However, it should be noted that most medium-complexity navigation (导航) directions depend in part on the ability of people to understand the perspective of a map. In other words, people without a sense of direction follow a route in pieces. Thus, they have no expanded understanding for space and navigate their environment without any mental map of their destinations.
However, there is a solution, namely to guide the person through a series of short routes.
32.What does the underlined phrase “without a hitch” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.with ease. B.by oneself.
C.in a short time. D.without hesitation.
33.What is the cause of going short of a sense of direction?
A.Being unable to put a map at hand.
B.Expanded understanding for space.
C.Neural networks’ improper functioning.
D.Lack of guiding through short routes.
34.What could be a challenge for someone without a sense of direction?
A.Reading a map. B.Forming a map in mind.
C.Following a route in pieces. D.Finishing a series of short routes.
35.What can be inferred from the text?
A.People with a sense of direction don’t need a map.
B.Having no sense of direction is merely an excuse.
C.Most people have long routes in their mind.
D.Mental map contributes to the sense of direction.

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself very quickly. He wanted to be first to wish everyone a happy New Year. He looked in every room, and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street, to repeat them to those he might meet. When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
He left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children shivering with cold.
"I wish you a happy New Year," said Edward, as he was happily passing by. The man shook his head. "You do not belong to this country?" said Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak the English language. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, as if to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time." Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in a very difficult situation and required some help. He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.
How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which doubtless meant, "We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you in our prayers."
When Edward came home, his father asked what book he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. "I have bought no books," said he, "I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry."
Paragraph 1:
“I think I can wait for my books till next New Year,” he continued.
