Jim Thorpe is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He had amazing athletic abilities and was well-known during his lifetime, yet that did not make Thorpe a stranger to adversity.
Thorpe was an American Indian from Oklahoma who developed his extraordinary athletic skills in his youth through hard labor. It was also in his youth that he learned to endure hardship brought upon by racial prejudice. Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew up poor and at age 9 his twin brother passed away and a few years later he lost both of his parents.
But that did not stop him from doing what he loved and pursuing his dreams. Nothing seemed to stop him, not even stolen shoes. Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in the 1912 Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. Thorpe improvised(临时拼凑) by getting shoes out of the garbage. The shoes were two different sizes. He wore an extra pair of socks on one foot to even them out.
He still went on to win two gold medals—winning each event he competed in except for one, the javelin(标枪). The javelin was the only event he didn’t win, probably because he had never competed in that event before. It is interesting to note that Thorpe had tried to throw the javelin once before in the Olympic trials. At the time, he didn’t know that he could throw it with a running start. He threw it standing still and was placed second.
At the Olympics,he also took part in the decathlon(十项全能运动). He finished first in two events, third in four events, and fourth in two more. Thorpe ended up finishing third in the world. He was undoubtedly a dominating force that couldn’t be stopped and just kept on going.
I think Paul Dughi said it best, “ It’s hard to imagine now that pro athletes get paid millions of dollars just to wear a particular brand of shoes. For Jim Thorpe, it didn’t matter what kind he wore.”
    24. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?
    A. The adversity Thorpe met with led to his success.
    B. Thorpe’s success was no guarantee of a better life.
    C. Thorpe’s career brought him both gains and losses.
    D. Thorpe suffered many hardships despite his success.
    25. Why did Thorpe wear more socks on one foot?
    A. To prevent the foot from injury. B. To make the shoe fit the foot.
    C. To stop the shoe from being stolen. D. To show his problem-solving skills.
    26. What most likely led to Thorpe’s failure to win the javelin?
    A. Loss of his own sports shoes. B. A casual attitude towards the event.
    C. Lack of experience in the event. D. A shortage of talent for the event.
    27. Which of the following words can best describe Jim Thorpe?
    A. Loyal and enthusiastic. B. Genuine and creative.
    C. Tough and strong-minded. D. Selfless and good-tempered.
    C
Today’s journalists face modern challenges. Online media platforms are springing up. And the lowly(无足轻重的) newspaper and its reporters are fighting money, tech, and distrust issues. Journalism students and teachers must emphasize new skills to keep their profession alive.
A trustworthy press helps inform people and monitor all levels of government. That is essential to a nation. Yet this useful establishment is growing increasingly unpopular. According to the University of North Carolina (UNC), newsroom jobs across the Country are fewer than half what they were 10 years ago. And on many college campuses, the news about the news is bleak too.
Take the Syracuse, New York, student-run newspaper The Daily Orange: It isn’t daily anymore. The paper prints just three times each week. Next year, The Diamondback of the University of Maryland will be online only. Half the newspapers that still exist on paper say they don’t print as many copies. And UNC’ s The Daily Tar Heel has cut staff pay and rented cheaper offices to make its budget.
Considering the problems in journalism, it’s surprising that the enrollment(注册人数) in college journalism programs is up. The Daily Orange managing editor Catherine Leffert calls the layoffs and cutbacks disheartening. “But what keeps me wanting to be a journalist is seeing the effect that The Daily Orange has,” he says.
But journalism educators wonder, “Are we preparing young people for a dying industry?” Years ago, journalism graduates took low-level reporter jobs at newspapers or television stations. That still happens. But today’s jobs more often involve digital editing, social media production, and video streaming. Some universities are taking action. The University of Florida offers a sports media program. Several schools highlight statistics-driven data journalism.
The news isn’t all bad. Journalism professor Kathleen Culver says, “When I look at 18-and 20-year-olds in journalism and see what they want to do, I’m optimistic.” Maddy Arrowood is the student editor of The Daily Tar Heel. She says her experience makes her more interested in a journalism career, not less. Her optimism “comes from knowing that people still need news. They still need information.”
    28. What does the underlined word “bleak” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Hopeless B. Interesting C. Useless D. Encouraging
    29. How do some universities respond to today’s journalism?
    A. They reduce student enrollment.
    B. They offer students specialized programs.
    C. They prepare students for low-level reporter jobs.
    D. They encourage students to run their own newspaper.
    30. Why is Maddy Arrowood mentioned in the last paragraph?
    A. To show people’s positive attitudes to journalists.
    B. To prove the potential of a career in journalism.
    C. To show the popularity of The Daily Tar Heel.
    D. To prove people’s thirst for the latest news.
    31. What might be the best title for the text?
    A. What is journalism? B. What does a journalist do?
    C. Does journalism have a future? D. Are journalists still influential today?
    D
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, healthcare workers continue to risk their lives to treat patients. Under the current system, diagnosing, monitoring, and managing COVID-19 are contributing to its spread through contact. In an effort to improve this situation, data analytics company SDG Group has announced a new smartphone application called Docdot to help doctors collect relevant clinical data through telemonitoring.
Docdot uses facial recognition technology on smartphone cameras to detect a patient’s vital signs(生命体征) and process them using artificial intelligence. This recognition and processing technology (photoplethysmography) was developed by Binah.ai. It enables smartphone cameras to use the light reflected by blood vessels (血管) under the skin to detect and record changes in the volume of blood flowing in blood vessels under the skin, and that occur due to variations in respiration (呼 吸), blood pressure, etc. The app converts this into measurements reportedly 90 percent as accurate as hospital-grade monitors.
Docdot enables people to look into their smartphone’s screen and share early indicators of infection. It gives health workers the information they need to triage (分诊) patients at a safe distance, preventing unnecessary visits to hospitals and reducing the risk of exposure among health workers and patients. This maximizes the availability of healthcare resources for those who need them most, and contributes to slowing the spread of the virus.
“Use of this technology for virus monitoring and detection is new,” says Heather Beardmore, SDG Group UK chief executive. “This healthcare innovation is the first remote-monitoring and triage tool with potential to transform diagnosis and management.” It is also recognized by World Health Organization (WHO) and Forbes as being one of the most innovative digital health solutions worldwide. Docdot has undergone clinical trials in Canada, India and Japan, and is now used in the USA hospitals.
    32. What is the function of Docdot?
    A. To manage COVID-19 effectively. B. To detect COVID-19 patients accurately.
    C. To monitor COVID-19 patients remotely. D. To treat COVID-19 patients successfully.
    33. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
    A. How Docdot works. B. How to use Docdot.
    C. Where to use Docdot. D. What advantages Docdot has.
    34. What is Heather Beardmore’s attitude to the app?
    A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Skeptical. D. Indifferent.
    35. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Effective Measures Against COVID-19 B. Global Cooperation Against COVID-19
    C. Doctors — Heroes who Fight COVID-19 D. Docdot — A Mobile App that Helps Doctor

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
There are many friends that will come into your life—some will gradually lose touch, some will be getting closer, and some you will actively choose not to be friends with. 36 But your old friends seem to stick around, and no matter how near or far they are, they continue to be a part of your life.
From old friends we learn how much we grow. 37 They encourage us to do better and even they force us to do better. We know that if we’re happy with who we’ve become, they may play a role in that process.
The sense of freedom that comes with old friends is new friends failing to bring. You don’t need to make a good impression with people who know you well. 38 The youth is often filled with many playful moments and careless choices. There is a vivid recollection of difficult periods that you have been through.
With old friends, you realize true friendships are difficult to create, to cultivate, and to hold onto.
    39
Old friends hold a mirror in front of us and allow us to see how far we’ve gone, and how far we still have to go to achieve our goals. 40 Old friends remind us that the past is both good and bad, and that the future is something to look forward to. No matter how time goes by, when we’re with our old friends, we will feel at home—where we can be stupid and happy with people who love us.
    A. When you’re a child, making friends does not require too much effort.
    B. With old friends there is often great laughter when you share your past.
    C. They are the people who have similar experience and simple innocence.
    D. This fact not only exists in our schooldays, but also will continue to the years to come.
    E. The gratefulness that you have for having a friend long enough to call them an “old friend” feels
    wonderful.
    F. Old friends show us all the parts that we still need to change, and some of the parts we may never
    change.
    G. They’re the people who’ve usually witnessed everything from our major accomplishments to our
    small mistakes.

There’s just a l-in-3,700,000 chance that a person will be killed by 61 shark, but the fear is still enough to have swimmers worrying about 62 (see) as prey (捕获物). Now, new research supports the long-standing theory, 63 explains that it’s a case of “mistaken identity” when great whites go in for a bite.
A team of biologists 64 (compare) videos of seals swimming with those of humans swimming. They then edited the clips to simulate a great white’s vision and found that 65 the ocean inhabitant’s point of view, humans do indeed have a strong resemblance to seals.
“Usually, great white sharks 66 (regard) as ‘mindless killers’ and ‘fond of human flesh’. However, this does not seem to be the case; we just look like 67 (they) food,” Laura Ryan, lead author of the study, told Live Science.
“They eat seals every day and bites on people are 68 (extreme) rare,” said Catherine MacDonald, a marine scientist at the University of Miami. “So if they’re not solving the problem visually, then how do we think they’re solving it? 69 (hit) the right targets, sharks could be relying on other senses, like the scent. Dear cousin,
Long time no see! It has been almost a year ever since you move to London. I miss you a lot. I’m writing the letter to ask you for help. As you know, I am eager to be a photographer like you, so I asked my parents to buy me the camera last week. But he told me I wouldn’t concentrate on my schoolwork if I got one. Oh, my God! What can I make them trust me? I’m not a kid any longer, but I can control myself. What’s worse, I have promised that I will take photo for the school’s newspaper in next month. When asking by my classmates, I will be absolutely embarrassed. Therefore, would you like to lend me some money? If you’d like, I will return it as soon as possibly.
    Yours sincerely,
    Mary

    书面表达:
    Dear Tom,
Knowing that you need to take online courses because of the pandemic, I’m writing to offer some useful suggestions on how to improve your study efficiency.
To begin with, when taking online courses, you are supposed to stay away from electronic devices, which may distract your attention all the time. Keeping a distance with them will help you focus on your lessons more easily. In addition, it is a good idea to make a study schedule, so that you can make better use of your time. Last but not least, why not keep a frequent communication with your teachers and classmates even though you can not meet them face to face. The more you communicate with them, the less problem you will have, which can save a lot of time.
Hopefully, these suggestions will be of great help to you. Take good care of yourself during the pandemic.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

W: Great. Let’s put it in this box, so it stays nice and flat.
M: I used the colored pencils that she got me for my birthday to make it, too! She will be happy about that.
W: Yes, she will. She loves your artwork! I wish I had time to bake a cake.
M: ⑦She would have liked that. You are the best baker, Mom.
    Text 7
M: Tina, are you coming to band practice this week? Our show is this Friday... only two days away!
W: ⑧ Yes, I’m coming tonight. I didn’t come last week because my guitar was broken.
M: Did you fix your guitar? My sister has a new guitar you can probably borrow if your guitar is still broken.
W: Thanks, but I can only play music on my guitar because it’s a left-handed guitar... it’s for people who use their left hands for most things. ⑨ I fixed my guitar on Monday night.
M: Why didn’t you fix it sooner? We only have two days until our show.
W: ⑩ I’ve been so busy this month! I have to work at the grocery store and watch my little sister until my mom comes home from work.
    Text 8
W: ⑪Hi, are you Don? I’m Lynn. I saw the advertisement you put on the Internet about selling your car.
M: Hi, Lynn. Nice to meet you. Thanks for your interest. Here’s my car. It’s a 2006 Honda Civic. I took a lot of road trips in it! It is not perfect, but it is safe to drive and it has new tires.
    W: Is anything broken?
M: ⑫The radio is broken and the heater is broken, but the air conditioner works well.
W: I think you should lower the price because the radio and the heater are broken. If you don’t lower the price, I don’t think I want to buy it.
M: Sorry, but I’m not lowering the price. It’s a very safe car, even if the radio is broken. Would you like to drive the car so you can see if you like it?
W: ⑬No, thank you. I am worried something else is broken too.
    Text 9
W: My mom thinks that we should name the baby after her. What do you think?
M: I think your mom is a little too selfish! Plus, I don’t really think “Betty Bettson” sounds like a name I’d want to have.
W: OK. I just had to ask. I didn’t like the idea much, either. ⑭I really love the name Laura, though.
M: ⑭That’s nice. But I think we should give her a really strong name so she’s tough. How about Helga or Josephine?
W: Those names make me think of unattractive women! Helga sounds like a lady who could carry me under her arm!
M: That’s the idea! I don’t want anyone thinking they can mess with my daughter. ⑮ I want her to be able to stand up to people, especially any boys who might try to look at her.
W: I don’t think a name has that much power, dear.
M: OK. I see your point. I’ll just have to take care of the boys myself. I know this baby is going to be beautiful!
W: ⑯That’s right. Let’s not give her an ugly name! How about something more elegant, like Victoria?
    M: ⑯I like that!
    Text 10
Nicholas Sparks is an American author and storyteller whose books have consistently been turned
into major Hollywood films. Although not all of his books were sold to Hollywood, all have been
The New York Times best-sellers. ⑰He has sold over 97 million copies worldwide, with over
65 million of them within the United States alone. He lives with his family in North Carolina.
He is also considered to be very generous with his money. ⑱In 2011, he created the Nicholas
Sparks Foundation to make more opportunities available to children from poor families. He
said,“Education is the gift that changed my life.” His foundation, which he started with his wife,
creates scholarships for children from low-income families in rural communities. He and his wife
also founded the Epiphany School in New Bern, North Carolina. ⑲The school’s main goal is to
help students practice the values of respect, responsibility, service, and honesty on a daily
basis. Sparks has had a very successful career, and he owes that to education. ⑳“The
education I received growing up prepared me for the world I’d be facing in the future,” the
author said. Even though he is worth an estimated 75 million dollars or so, Sparks seems to live
the values he presents in his books and films.
