    高考英语二轮复习阅读理解强化练习题(9)
    1.    A new research shows human activity is changing the sound of the Earth’s oceans and seas. Scientists say the sound changes of our oceans, seas, and other waterways affect many marine (海洋的) animals – from very small shrimps to huge whales.
Sound travels very far underwater, Francis Juanes, an ecologist at the University of Victoria in Canada, told the Associated Press. For fish, he explained, sound is probably a better way to sense their environment than light. Sounds help fish and other marine animals survive and communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters.
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise is coming from shipping traffic, underwater exploration, and other noisy human activities. For many marine animals, their attempts to communicate are being masked (掩盖) by sounds that humans have produced. Experts explain that masking happens when one or more noises in the water block sound important to a marine animal’s living. The overall number of marine animals has gone down by about half since 1970. Some studies show the stress from human noise might also affect the immune system as well as reproductive health or behavior. “Imagine having to raise your kids in a place that’s noisy all the time,” said Joe Roman, a marine ecologist at the University of Vermont.
When people think of problems facing the ocean, we often think of climate change, plastics, and overfishing. But noise pollution is another thing we need to be monitoring. “Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean problems,” Scientist Juanes says. “If we make something for the ocean, think about how to make it quieter.”
1.Why is sound underwater important for ocean animals?
    A.It changes with light.
    B.It’s difficult to sense.
C.It helps them survive and communicate.
D.It helps hunters to find where they are.
2.What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A.Human noise brings stress to marine animals.
B.Kids should experience noise to be healthy.
    C.Underwater exploration must be stopped.
D.Marine animals have got used to sound changes.
3.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To introduce the benefits of sounds.
B.To show the effects of climate change.

    2.    With about 1,000-meter-high steep cliffs (陡峭的悬崖) around, there Xiazhuang, Chongqing had only one pathway out of the village, and it took villagers three days to walk to the main town. People there used to risk their lives going out of the mountain village. In the 40 years to 1997, 23 people had died from falling off the cliff while cutting firewood or travelling to the county seat, and 75 people had been injured or disabled while doing the same activities. Then, village head Mao Xianglin held a meeting in 1997 and suggested building a road snaking along the mountains, but almost no villager agreed because they had no money, no machines and no confidence to take on the tough project.
Later that year, around 100 people volunteered to do the work after Mao’s efforts. Workers hung from ropes and used hammers, drills and even explosives to create the road. Falling rocks and other dangers led to the deaths of six villagers. When they slept in caves (洞穴) at night, they tied a rope around their bodies with the other end tied to the root of an old tree to make sure they did not fall off the cliff.
“Mountains had isolated us from the outside for generations. We had to do something to ensure the next generation could go out of the mountains for a good life,” Mao said. When the 8-kilometer road was completed in 2004, it enabled many villagers to travel out and find work. Incomes increased as a result. Mao will retire in five years, planning to widen the current road and focus on ecotourism. “The spirit of the Xiazhuang people can’t be lost and has to be passed down from generation to generation,” he said.
1.What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.The history of the village. B.The development of the village.
C.The specific deaths in the building. D.The reason for building the road.
2.What do we know about the building of the road from Paragr

    A.Attracted. B.Separated. C.Contacted. D.Gathered.
4.Which of the following can best describe Mao’s personality?
    A.Frightened. B.Determined. C.Distant. D.Curious.
3.Teenagers are risk-takers. Those things may not be understood by the adults around them. Are they driven by poor judgment or immature (不成熟的)brains?
In their book Wildhood, the bestselling authors Barbara Natterson-Horowitz and Kathryn Bowers, present findings from their five-year study on wild animal adolescence(青春期). The two performed a complete survey of age-related death in wild animals and found something truly surprising—young folks are born to take risks, and with good reasons.
Life on Earth for adolescent and young adult animals is just as dangerous. In the wild young animals crash, drown and starve more often than their adult animals. And they are more likely to be targeted and killed by predators (捕食者).Old enough to be away from home? But new to the ways of the world? This time of life is risky for human adolescents as well. Wildlife biologists describe these unprepared creatures as predator naives(幼稚).
Facing death danger while still maturing is a fact of life for adolescents across species. Adolescents must have predator awareness if they are to survive. Said another way: To become safe, you must take risks.
Adult bats typically flee predators such as barn owls. But adolescent bats have been seen doing the opposite —flying toward them. This behavior can also be seen in other wild animals. Biologists call it “predator inspection(检查)”. Predator inspection provides young animals important information about their deadly predators. Familiarity with predatory strategies helps adolescents survive and even avoid future attacks. Predator inspection is one of the ways to help predator naives to become experienced predators.
Studying wild animal adolescence offers a new understanding of why teenagers act the way they do. Parents should balance the urge to protect with the need to let their teenagers test their wings. The research suggests that adolescents need some exposure to the dangers they will someday face on their own —and without knowing that, parents’ over protection maybe the riskiest behavior of all.
1.What do we know about predator naives?
A.They die of hunger. B.They are inexperienced.
C.They are born to hate risks. D.They like living in the wild.
2.How can adolescents survive according to paragraph 4?
    A.By keeping away from dangers.
    B.By experiencing various dangers.
    C.By approaching other companions .
D.By learning security experience from elders.
3.What benefit can adolescent animals get from predator inspection?
A.They don’t have to avoid dangers.
B.They don’t have to fight for food.
C.They can learn about their predators.
D.They can understand the value of life.
4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A.Refusing parents’ protection benefits teenagers.
B.Parents should take risks with their teenagers.
C.Studying wild animal adolescence benefits human parenting.
D.Parents should avoid leaving their teenagers exposed to dangers.
4.As Covid-19 forces families across India to downsize or cancel their traditionally large-scale wedding, one couple has found a place unaffected by restrictions: the metaverse (元宇宙).
Dinesh Sivakumar Padmavathi and Janaganandhini Ramaswamy from Tamil Nadu, where wedding gatherings are currently limited to 100 people, have invited 2,000 people to their virtual reception next month. And as self-professed "Potterheads," or fans of Harry Potter, the pair have chosen a Hogwarts-themed party that guests can attend via their phones, tablets or laptops. "Because of the pandemic, a physical, real kind of reception is not possible with the huge number of people attending," said Padmavathi, "So, we decided: let's make it in the metaverse.
Metaverse is a term used to describe virtual 3D environments in which users can gather and interact. The groom, a 24-year-old blockchain and cryptocurrency enthusiast, worked with start-up platform TardiVerse to create a castle-like digital space inspired by Hogwarts.
The legal wedding ceremony will still take place physically in front of close friends and relatives in Ramaswamy's village in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district. But afterwards, the couple will log on to join their reception, which is costing 150,000 Indian rupees to design, develop and host. The one-hour event will see the newlyweds virtually address their guests to express their appreciation, who will be able to explore the castle and customize their avatars' (头像)appearance and outfit.
As well as being able to invite guests who couldn't otherwise attend, the couple said the digital celebration has another unique advantage: they can involve Ramaswamy's late father in the proceedings.
"My father-in-law passed away last April," Padmavathi said. "So, I'm creating a 3D avatar that looks similar to him, and he will bless me and my fiancée. That's something we can only do in the metaverse." The Newly-found Application of the Metaverse.D. A Unique Wedding Ceremony during Covid-19.
    5.    Most of us use web browsers(浏览器)out of habit. However, there are a lot of similar apps for us to choose in the appstore. They serve the same purpose: visiting a website. So if the differences are minimal, why bother looking for something else?
As a matter of fact, a new type of internet navigator(导航器), called a private browser, has emerged over the last three years. What stands out is that they minimize the data gathered about us by blocking the technologies used to track us, when most mainstream browsers, such as Chrome from Google, have been trying to develop a new way to target us with ads.
Private browsers generally rely on something called private mode, which is a browsing session that does not record a history of the websites you have visited. Firefox Focus, DuckDuckGo and Brave are all similar private browsers, but with some important differences.
Firefox Focus, available only for mobile devices like iPhones and Android smartphones, is the basic one. You input a web address and, when done browsing, hit the trash icon to erase the session. Quitting the app automatically purges the history.
The DuckDuckGo browser, also available only for mobile devices, is more like a traditional browser. The company says it is more focused on privacy because its ads do not track people’s online behavior. When done browsing, you can hit the flame icon at the bottom to erase the session.
Brave is also more like a traditional web browser. It includes a private mode that must be turned on if you don’t want people scrutinizing(仔细检查)your web history. Brave is so aggressive about blocking trackers that in the process, it almost always blocks ads entirely. The other private browsers block ads less frequently.
For most people, not seeing ads is undoubtedly a benefit. Brendan Eich, the chief executive of Brave, said, “If everybody used Brave, it would wipe out the tracking-based ad economy”.
    Count me in.
1.How does the author feel about private browsers?
    A.Enthusiastic. B.Confused. C.Panicked. D.Disappointed.

B.To inform users about the three new private browsers.
C.To introduce the latest technologies in developing browsers.
D.To teach readers how to use private browsers.
    6.    The Chinese fashion icon, qipao, was born a century ago in Shanghai. However, the dress made its way through history from the hands of old craftsmen and is deep-rooted in Chinese culture.
“Qipao used to be so popular,” Leung Long-kong, 89, a well-known qipao craftsman, says, adding that the dress was an everyday outfit among women, from the less well-off to women at the highest levels of society. “Now, nobody is wearing them except on grand and happy occasions.”
To carry on the tradition, fashion designer Mary Yu, 41, who has been attending classes teaching knot button-making techniques, is trying to renew the design of qipao by taking symbols from Chinese history and literature.
“I feel I should look into Chinese culture and learn more about the past. People should have an in-depth understanding of their culture in order to move on,” Yu says. “Fashion design requires a profound knowledge of one’s culture before visualizing it.”
“After a period of wearing foreign brands all the time, there will be a day when one looks back to traditional Chinese culture. It is about finding the stuff that exists in your genes and suits you best.”
Yu set up her own qipao brand in 2016. Most of the clothes were made by tailors based in Shenzhen and Hangzhou, for their lower cost and more traditional work.
In the constantly evolving fashion industry, qipao is catching up with the times. Zippers, digital print patterns and new materials such as lace and denim have been introduced to a new generation. More daring ideas like 3D printed qipao have also become a reality. D.Qipao is seen as a symbol of wealth in modern China.
7.Shaping, drying, glazing and firing ... In less than 5 minutes, a mini vase only millimeters in size starts to take shape as viewers watch on. As the founder of a miniature ceramics (微型陶瓷)studio, Wang Wenhua never expected that his work would surprise viewers in China let alone those abroad, and that his short videos would earn over 45 million views and 4.2 million likes on Douyin, the Chinese version of Tik Tok.
Having worked in China's "Porcelain Capital" Jingdezhen in East China's Jiangxi Province for 14 years, Wang said he had once seen the world's biggest ceramic here but he had never seen the smallest, so he decided one day to try something different—making micro porcelain(瓷器).
Things were not easy in the beginning, and many people doubted him. "They called me crazy man and mocked me when I went to factories and asked them to help make miniature tools for me to create micro pottery, even my wife did not support me," Wang said.

    9.    Ever wondered how many Tyrannosaurus rex (霸王龙) ever walked around the Earth? The answer is 2.5 billion over the two million or so years in which the species existed, according to a calculation published today in Science. The figure has allowed researchers to estimate just how rare it is for animals to fossilize.
Researchers led by Charles Marshall used a method employed by ecologists studying contemporary creatures to estimate the population of T. rex during the late Cretaceous period.
The team used their estimates of the total range of T. rex across modern North America, combined with their estimates of the dinosaur’s weight, to calculate that, at one time, around 20,000 T. rex would have been alive on the planet. That translates to around 3,800 T. rex in an area the size of California, or just 2 T. rex moving around Washington DC. Calculating that T. rex survived for about 127,000 generations before disappearing, the researchers came up with a figure of 2.5 billion individuals over the species’ entire existence. Only 32 adult T. rex have been discovered as fossils, so the fossil record accounts for just 1 in about every 80 million T. rex. This means that the chances of being fossilized were small.
These numbers suggest that fossils in general are rare, and that many species that were less widespread than T. rex were probably never preserved, says Marshall, who adds, “The fossil record is our only direct knowledge of these past histories of our planet.”
Thomas Holtz, a researcher, says that “we always knew that the chance of any individual becoming a fossil was rare, but we lacked the calculation to figure out how rare”. He’d like to see comparable studies made on disappearing species with more abundant fossils, which might allow us to better understand historic ecosystems.
1.Which of the following was used to figure out the population of T. rex?
A.The approach to calculating kinds of wildlife.
B.The method used by researchers to study fossils.
C.The comparison of various studies on disappearing species.

A.T. rex owns quite a few fossils.
B.The fossils record all the past of our planet.
C.Fossils of some species may never be stored.
D.Many species lived together in their whole life.

C.Scientists employed fossils to understand past ecosystems.
D.The figure of T. rex helps calculate how rare their fossils are.
    10.    I’m running some 3,550 kilometers. To be more precise, this jog is mostly around my neighborhood in Ottawa. It is the distance by air to Vancouver that my friend Louise and I are doing. If we make it, Louise and I will get on a plane to Vancouver and compete in one of the BMO Vancouver Marathon weekend races. We may not win medals, but for sure we’ll have cake for my seventy-fifth birthday at the finish line.
The workout for big birthdays represents a big change for me. I used to hate birthdays, especially those milestone ones. No longer feeling young is horrible. As I approached my sixtieth birthday, Louise suggested setting targets to mark milestone birthdays. “That way you are looking forward to something, not dreading it,” she pointed out.
By doing those expanding my world or demanding new skills, I feel myself growing, not shrinking. For my sixtieth, I got it into my head that I should do an Olympic distance triathlon (铁人三项赛), which turned out to be a real milestone. After over four hours on the course, I was last among the 95 competitors. But I was the oldest woman competing, so that made me first in my age category. Since then, I’ve looked on the special days as a call for trying something different. For my sixty-fifth birthday, I went to run a half marathon. And I finished seven activities that took me out of my “comfort zone” at seventy.
I’m fortunate to have celebrated so many birthdays in good health and spirits, so whether I succeed in running to Vancouver or not, I’m grateful for the opportunity. One thing I’ve learned in taking up these challenges is that there are many possibilities for new adventures and achievements, even as we grow older. So do spend every day of every year with a definite end in view, which will release your energy and make you happy.
1.How does the author plan to observe her 75th birthday?
    A.Going jogging in Ottawa.
B.Flying to Vancouver with a friend.
    C.Joining in a marathon race.
D.Running 3,550 km around her neighborhood.
2.What attitude did the author use to hold toward birthdays?
    A.Calm. B.Fearful. C.Positive. D.Casual.
3.Why did the author think the triathlon a milestone?
A.It made her feel much younger.
B.It changed her attitude to birthdays.
C.It proved she was in good condition.
D.It made her step outside her comfort zone.
4.What does the author suggest at last?
    A.Living with a clear goal.
    B.Appreciating new challenges.
C.Keeping energetic by being close to nature.
    D.Celebrating birthdays by running marathons.
